The Languedoc/Aude Region: This part of the Languedoc has a sunny Mediterranean climate boasting 300 days of sunshine each year.

Languedoc offers something for everyone. Miles of long, sandy beaches, Cathar castles, fabulous scenery, great cuisine and vineyards in abundance.

The most renowned attractions in the area are the medieval walled ‘Cite’ and the Canal du Midi, both of which are World Heritage Sites and should not be missed. However, there is much more to see in this delightful region. The surrounding area is one of outstanding natural beauty and nearby villages such as Limoux, Mirepoix and St Hilaire, to name but a few, are both pretty and interesting.

Further afield, Narbonne, Montpellier, Toulouse and Pezenas are all well worth a visit.

Carcassonne/Montclar - Activities: Montclar is an excellent base from which to sample the wide variety of activities that are available in the region.

In addition to great walks and cycling that can be taken from the house, the more adventurous might enjoy kayaking, canoeing and white water rafting that are all reached within a short drive.

Lac de la Cavayere, a man made beach and lake close to Carcassonne, is a 20 minute drive away. Here there is a sandy beach, swimming, picnic areas, walks and other leisure activities including an excellent treetop adventure course for all ages.

The famous Canal du Midi also offers boat trips or boat hire or a quiet stroll along the river that winds its way through Carcassonne itself.

There are numerous markets that are a feature of life in the area. In particular, the Saturday morning market at Place Carnot in the centre of Carcassonne, is an absolute must, but the markets at nearby Limoux and Mirepoix are also well worth a visit.

A Beautiful and Relaxing Week in the South of France (Montclar)

  • 5 of 5

At the end of our week's stay at Labyrinthe (villa's name), the entire group, made up of 10 family members, all agreed that we would have liked more time in this beautiful villa or to be able to return someday.

The villa and gardens were even more lovely than the online pictures. The owner was very helpful and prompt in answering my many questions throughout the booking process and beyond. Also, the villa's manager was very welcoming and informative in familiarizing us with the property upon our arrival and making herself available throughout the week as needed. The Information Packet provided by the owner contained loads of helpful information, as did the travel brochures and guides in the villa.

We tended to congregate in and around the very clean, heated, saltwater pool. It was so relaxing! We used the kitchen on the lower level primarily for poolside beverages and snacks, very convenient. At least half of our group is from southeastern United States where the summer heat and humidity is oppressive, being able to have the villa's windows open with the breeze rushing through was such a treat. At night we usually used the AC units which were very quiet and powerful. We slept great! FYI - the beds described as king size in the villa are more similar to US queen size beds.

We prepared a a few simple meals and found that both kitchens were very well equipped.

Regarding activities: Trips to Carcassonne Cite and the Canal du Midi were fascinating. We enjoyed a boat ride on the canal which was relaxing and informative. We would definitely recommend the market in Mirepoix. It's a beautiful drive through the countryside and brings you closer to the Pyrenees. We made several trips to the bakery in Pomas for their wonderful croissants. Get there early for the best selection. Their buy 3 get 1 free was the perfect deal for our large group. To work off some calories we found an excellent hike that brought us to a high meadow with spectacular views of the valley and the Pyrenees in the distance. To begin this hike we turned right when leaving the villa, followed the road up and around and then kept taking the road (sometimes dirt/gravel) on the left. But not the first left track that leads into a field. This route brings you around the backside of Montclar. Our tech savvy folks were able to locate and plot this route on their phones.

The south of France is so beautiful as is Labyrinthe. We highly recommend it. And thank you for the excellent wine!

Fantastic villa, great holiday

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from our week stay at Labrinthe. I can't sing the properties praises highly enough. There were 8 of us in our group including 2 children (aged 16 months and 4 yrs) and we were all accommodated perfectly.

The Villa is stunning and the views are exceptional. The bedrooms are very spacious and all have their own incredible views as well as their own bathrooms which was a huge help.

The Villa is incredibly well stocked with glassware, cooking items and crockery which was a blessing given the size of our group.

The region is beautiful and is only a 20 minute drive from Carcassonne.

In addition to all these features, the contact from the owner Nigel was fantastic. He answered all of our numerous queries prior to our holiday in no time at all and nothing was too much trouble. Likewise, Debbie who met us there and showed us around the property when we arrived was very welcoming and only a text message away!

All in all I cannot speak highly enough of this property. This is our 4th Villa holiday and by far the best one we have ever stayed at.

Truly fantastic!

  • 5 of 5

I almost don't know where to start reviewing this wonderful place!

We arrived with a 'rota' of friends & family who were going to stay with us during our 3 week holiday. On arrival we were met by Richard, who showed us around. He, & Debbie, the housekeepers, were very helpful, informative & friendly. The house is furnished & stocked more than adequately - plenty of cutlery & crockery. There is more than enough space for 8 adults to be together comfortably, & yet have privacy if required.

The bedrooms are spacious, with plenty of storage space & air-conditioning for the stickier nights.

The large pool was cleaned twice weekly, & kept at a perfect temperature by Martin - who was also most helpful with any other queries we had.

Plenty of activities were on site to enable us to have our own 'Olympics'!! Swimming, ping-pong, table football, cycling & boules for outdoors, & numerous board games inside.

The terrace gets the evening sunshine & is perfect for a pre-dinner glass of wine (local, of course!)

If I'm honest, it was slightly more remote than I thought - I felt sure there would be a small bar/restaurant in the village & there wasn't!! So, the gas barbecue was an added bonus, & we used it regularly. We spent nearly every evening sat outside on the balcony, without worry of disturbing the neighbours! There are very large supermarkets close by, so supplies are good.

A wonderful restaurant nearby, made us very welcome several times - Domaine Michaud.

All in all, we had a truly fantastic holiday in 'Labyrinthe' - I have no doubts at all in whole heartedly recommending this property. I definitely like to think that we will return! The communications from the owner were efficient & prompt, as was the refund of our damage deposit.

Thank you for a fabulous & memorable holiday!

Family group staying at Labyrinthe

  • 4 of 5

We were a family group across 3 generations and stayed 2 weeks at the villa. The villa was beautifully presented and maintained. The facilities worked exceptionally well for us and we all had enough space to enjoy time both together and separately. The welcome packs were great and we availed of the offer of shopping which worked very well for us. Our only disappointment was that Monclar itself did not have any shops or restaurants. I would recommend this property to a friend or relative.

Beautiful house

  • 5 of 5

This is a fantastic property. The photos do not do it justice! There are 3 bedrooms on the lower ground floor (pool level) each with their own bathroom. 2 doubles and a twin. On the entrance level there is a large double and a small double that share a bathroom (separate toilet). The house was very clean and all the equipment was of exceptional quality. There was nothing that wasn't thought of. Our children enjoyed the pool which was cleaned several times during our stay and the big hit was the table tennis table under cover at the side of the house. There is a separate kitchen on the lower ground floor which we didn't need to use as we spent our time on the ground level. The outside eating area is covered with a great view of the hills and Montclar village. The managers of the property were quick to answer any queries we had promptly and were interested in our feedback. The welcome book was laid out well, maybe it could have included a top 5 of things to do in the area as I relied on 'Google' to read about the area. Carcassone itself is a spectacular sight, a little disappointing once inside the walled city with many of the same type of souvenir shops. We went to the beach at Leucate 3 times, lovely beach, few facilities but parking very easy and no problem with space in August. We tried Angeles sur mer but struggled to get near beach with traffic. Recommend the Mayronnes sculpture walk. Around an hour and half walk with lots of sculptures to find and to keep the children interested. We did not eat out but frequented the supermarket at limoux and used the BBQ facilities at the house. Montclar is a sleepy village, no shops so you need a car for groceries. In summary we have been going to France for 7 years and this is the best property we have stayed in. Would return if circumstances allow!

Holiday at 'Labyrinthe', Montclar.

  • 5 of 5

Had a really enjoyable family holiday (2 weeks). The house & grounds have had a lot of thought in design, layout and equipment. Customer service from Nigel (the owner), Bev (The on-sight Manageress) and Martin (Pool and maintenance) were 'second to none'. The area speaks for its self, both in history and beauty. Should my family or myself wish to visit this area again then 'Labyrinthe' will be top of our list. Ken & Sue.
