The Languedoc/Aude Region: This part of the Languedoc has a sunny Mediterranean climate boasting 300 days of sunshine each year.
Languedoc offers something for everyone. Miles of long, sandy beaches, Cathar castles, fabulous scenery, great cuisine and vineyards in abundance.
The most renowned attractions in the area are the medieval walled ‘Cite’ and the Canal du Midi, both of which are World Heritage Sites and should not be missed. However, there is much more to see in this delightful region. The surrounding area is one of outstanding natural beauty and nearby villages such as Limoux, Mirepoix and St Hilaire, to name but a few, are both pretty and interesting.
Further afield, Narbonne, Montpellier, Toulouse and Pezenas are all well worth a visit.
Carcassonne/Montclar - Activities: Montclar is an excellent base from which to sample the wide variety of activities that are available in the region.
In addition to great walks that can be taken from the house, the more adventurous might enjoy kayaking, canoeing and white water rafting that are all reached within a short drive.
Lac de la Cavayere, a man made beach and lake close to Carcassonne, is a 20 minute drive away. Here there is a sandy beach, swimming, picnic areas, walks and other leisure activities including an excellent treetop adventure course for all ages.
The famous Canal du Midi also offers boat trips or boat hire or a quiet stroll along the river that winds its way through Carcassonne itself.
There are numerous markets that are a feature of life in the area. In particular, the Saturday morning market at Place Carnot in the centre of Carcassonne, is an absolute must, but the markets at nearby Limoux (Friday mornings)and Mirepoix (Monday mornings) are also well worth a visit.

About Nigel Sammons
My wife and I bought 'Labyrinthe' in 2004 and neither of us has regretted our decision for a single second. The moment we walked through to the upstairs terrace we were well and truly hooked. We thoroughly enjoy equipping the house with all modern conveniences and it is very much our 'home from home'. We spend at least four months of each year at the house - just wish it could be more. The house lends itself ideally to large groups and we are enjoying an increasing number of holidays in the south of France with our ever growing family.
Nigel Sammons purchased this Villa in 2004
Why Nigel Sammons chose Arrondissement of Carcassonne
Carcassonne and the surrounding area offers something for everyone - - fabulous countryside - an incredible choice of great restaurants - vineyards and wine caves - history and heritage - La Cité, Canal du Midi, Cathar castles, Abbeys etc - white water rafting (not quite for us but is very popular with many of our guests) We could go on, but it would be very remiss of us not to mention that we have found the people in the region to be so friendly and helpful.
What makes this Villa unique
We bought the house largely because of its fabulous setting. It is so peaceful and we never tire of the views over the countryside. The heated pool and lovely garden are added bonuses. Although the house is in a quiet location, there are several villages with amenities that are only a short drive away. However, we tend to gravitate towards the major towns of Carcassonne and Limoux, both of which can be reached in fifteen minutes. So - peace and tranquility at home, but with easy access to all the benefits that are available in this beautiful region. In our view, and we accept that we might be somewhat biased, Labyrinthe offers the best of both worlds.

Extremely high quality property
Labyrinthe is exceptional! An amazing home where attention to detail is paramount and is also managed by an extremely efficient team. The setting is very peaceful and nature abounds. We were a party of eight adults and enjoyed a fabulous week at the property taking full advantage of the pool, pétanque, table tennis, games and of course the wines from the surrounding vineyards. The main bedrooms are arranged like private suites so that all could enjoy their privacy without the clamour for bathrooms. Everything here is well thought through.
We arranged a private chef from La Belle Assiette to cook a meal for us one evening to celebrate my wife's 'special birthday' and this proved to be a huge success.
We rent frequently in France and Labyrinthe is the best house to date and cannot be recommended highly enough.
An absolute gem in a gorgeous quiet location
We stayed 2 weeks in beautiful Labyrinthe, and we could not have dreamed of a more perfect location.
The house is in a beautiful, quiet village - you do need a car to get around. The whole region is fantastic with markets, wineries and historic sites aplenty.
We were 10 people and were very comfortable in the large house. It has everything you need, right down to the wine fridge. The bedrooms are large and quiet and the views breathtaking. The bathrooms are fabulous as well.
The outdoor spaces proved even better, with the large terrace providing magnificent views of the sun setting over the hills. The pool is nice and big, with room enough for everyone in our party to enjoy.
Great big thanks to Debbie and Richard for the nice welcome, to Martin and Catriona for taking great care of the house during our stay, and to Nigel, for being the most gracious owner.
We will be back if we can!
Beautiful house in a perfect setting
The house is really beautiful in a stunning setting. The layout is great and the two kitchens makes everything really convenient. The highlight is the swimming pool. Set in a gorgeous garden, it's fully heated and we spent our days at the pool, with the downstairs kitchen providing access to snacks, cold drinks and ice cream. The garden is beautifully maintained and the view in the mornings is just spectacular - nothing like waking up to the smell of lavender. The place was immaculately clean when we arrived and the owners have made sure the house is fully stocked with everything you might need. Part of its charm is that it is really quiet, but that does mean it is very isolated and there is no convenient boulangerie or cafe: you really do have to do a big supermarket shop for a few days and cook at home. But this is a minor inconvenience. We were never as relaxed as we were at Labyrinthe and recommend it wholeheartedly to groups who simply want a quiet holiday in a gorgeous house in the sun.
A fantastic villa in a stunning location
It’s hard to know where to begin to do justice to this lovely holiday villa. From the spotlessly clean pool and the extensive gardens to enjoy during the day to the comfortable beds and great air conditioning for a relaxing night’s sleep – everything about this villa is absolutely spot on for a great family holiday.
It’s equipped like a proper family home and there was nothing we needed that hadn’t been provided. We had 3 generations to accommodate and the layout of the villa was ideal for that. There were options, both indoors and out, for eating and socializing together but also plenty of space for children (and grandparents!) to have some privacy and chill out time.
The highlight for our 4 grandchildren, aged 9 and under, was definitely the fantastic heated pool and there was seldom a time when at least one of them wasn’t enjoying splashing around in it, closely followed by hide and seek in the extensive gardens! There are no close neighbours so the children were able to enjoy themselves without any worry of them disturbing anyone else.
At night the adults relaxed on the terrace or round the pool and enjoyed the absolute peace and quiet of the surrounding countryside and star gazing in the clear night skies – the Milky Way was visible every night, just amazing.
The owner is really prompt at answering queries and the housekeeping staff were all very friendly and helpful. If you’re looking for a relaxing place to spend time with your family come here – you won’t be disappointed!
We had a wonderful family holiday in Labyrinthe, with the property living up to and in fact exceeding all of our expectations. It was spotless throughout and extremely well furnished, with every facility one could ask for in a holiday property. The property was also extremely well maintained and our contact with both the owner and managers of the site was exemplary - who fitted in with us where necessary. There was a slight confusion over the arrival time but members of the family were able to wait by the pool for someone to arrive on our first day. Overall we would definitely recommend the property to friends or relatives.
Locally we visited Limoux for an evening meal at La Tantina, which was great - although do take the advise of the owners and book ahead as it gets very busy! We also visited Carcassonne - an obvious must - and the short visit to the Abbey at St Hilaire was most worthwhile. A lovely settlement and delightful abbey to be guided round.
This house was ideal for us. It is very comfortable, clean and big enough for a lot of people. The owners have thought of everything and we had a thoroughly good week!
The property is located in an idyllic rural setting on the edge of the village of Montclar - only a 20 minute drive from Carcassonne airport. It is 17km from Carcassonne, with its magnificent medieval castle and 17km from Limoux. The near vicinity boasts an array of exquisite villages, historical sites such as Cathar castles and ancient abbeys, the beautiful canal du midi, vineyards and some of the best restaurants that you will ever experience.
Other Activities: lake with beach and boating, kayaking.
