Overview

About the property

4 Bedrooms, 2 Bath, Sleeps 8 Home on Holy Waters of the Au Sable

Tucked into the tall pines alongside the Holy Waters. The Castaway offers an amazing location for enjoying all the Au Sable River has to offer. The cabin was purchased in 2009 for family use. We quickly realized how much we loved the location and invested in upgrading the accommodations, knowing we will have the place for many years to come. The renovations were completed in 2010 and we couldn’t be more excited about the outcome. The cabin now has two nicely sized full bathrooms and four well-furnished bedrooms in addition to expanded kitchen and mudroom areas.

The setting couldn’t be more perfect. Just outside the kitchen, guests will enjoy an outdoor living area with a shaded 6 person table, comfortable couches, and a large fire pit. Perfect for cooking over the open flame, relaxing with a good book, or snuggling up to watch the star-filled night sky. The deck around the front of the home has a grill and another 4 person table with umbrella.

The cabin itself sits about 200 feet back from the river. Down near the river, there is a tree swing and a grass clearing. It’s perfect for sitting in the Adirondacks while awaiting just the right moment to wet your line. Entry into the river off the property is ankle deep gravel. There are plenty of deep water pockets with the large trout of your dreams lurking nearby. There are plenty of spots for wading anglers or we would be happy to recommend local guides and fly shops.

For those not familiar with the Grayling area, it offers more than just some of the greatest fly fishing. The river itself attracts tubers, kayakers, and canoeists. Our cabin is situated between Burton’s Landing and Keystone Landing. Grayling is also in the center of a region with the most incredible golf courses such as Forest Dunes, Treetops, and Boyne Mountain. Looking for a nearby small beach? Kneff Lake is a small hidden local spot for kids to play in the sand and water. Wellington Farms, a historic working farm, also makes a great visit for something out of the ordinary.

The winter months attract many who loves the outdoors. Whether you are into snow-shoeing, cross country skiing, sledding, or downhill skiing, you will find a spot to keep you engaged. The cabin has a perfect sledding hill and comes equipped with a nice hot cocoa maker. Hanson Hills offers many trails for year-round adventures. Treetops offers downhill skiing and tubing (with reservations) about 30 minutes away. Boyne Mountain is about 45 minutes – 1 hour away.

We especially like to cater to family gatherings, anglers, and couples. Out of respect to our neighbors we do request that there aren't any large gatherings or late nights that would disrupt their quiet river setting.

Great for a large group

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was great for a large group. The different bedroom configurations made assigning rooms easy. The large dining table plus two outdoor tables meant we didn't have to eat in shifts. The outdoor spaces were great - the river, the outdoor seating/fire pit - and the grassy hill was great for tiring out small children. Our group had a wonderful time and I can't wait to go back!

Summer Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We rented the home for 6 nights this June. We have enjoyed coming back as its not our first time at this property. The home is very clean and well stocked with dishes. Its in a great location on the river for quality fishing if that's an interest of yours. We really enjoyed cooking on the grill on the back deck and having camp fires in the fire pit. The hot water heater did go out but they were quick to get it fixed. I am sure we will be back in the future!

Beautiful and relaxing

  • 5 of 5

We had a great family vacation at this cabin on the river! The house was perfect size, comfortable and nicely decorated. The owners are very nice, informative and accommodating! The patio was perfect for talks around the campfire, grilling and s'mores. We loved walking down by the river and watching the kids play and everyone fish! We sat by the river in the morning with coffee enjoying the beauty and peace the river provides. We would definitely rent this cabin again and hope to soon!

Excellent Accommodation in a Lovely Setting

  • 5 of 5

A party of eight, consisting of my husband and me, his two sisters and their husbands, and the two young children of one sister, booked this gracious cottage for a week to attend the family reunion hosted by another brother in the Grayling area. The cottage has everything we had hoped for: a really lovely setting directly on the Au Sable River (also excellent fishing for those who fish), chairs and a hammock right by the river for relaxing, good kitchen accommodations with nice pots, pans, utensils etc., a dining area with views, deck with nice seating and views, a firepit right outside the door for toasting marshmallows in the evenings, seating area in the living room with comfortable furniture, two modern and updated bathrooms including a lovely shower and tub in the master bath, and bedrooms that accommodated all of us - three double rooms for the couples and a bunk bed room for the kids. The owner answered all our questions up front, and the complete information provided to us in advance made it unnecessary to contact her during our stay. We would advise everyone not to miss the old growth forest trail (unique in lower Michigan) in Hartwick Pines State Park, which is very close by. For excellent casual dining, we particularly liked the Dead Bear Brewing Company in Grayling and the Gates Au Sable Lodge on Stephan Bridge Road (for the latter, be sure to make a reservation and BYOB if you want wine with your meal).

Beautiful home and views!

  • 4 of 5

This is our second long weekend staying at the property and we have really enjoyed both. The home offers all we could need with plenty of room. Love the fire pit and views of the river. Our toddler loved exploring the river and finding rocks. Had good success fishing out in front of the cabin as well. Always had good/quick communication with the property manager as well. We are looking forward to coming again next summer.
