About Ken Kosal

Hi, I am Ken, and with my wife Michelle, we are offering this cabin for rent. We live in South Lyon and are 'up north' most weekends (we have a cabin across the lake from this rental). We have 2 college age boys and 2 English Setters.

Ken Kosal purchased this cabin in 2013

Why Ken Kosal chose Northern Michigan

Michelle and I purchased this cabin in the fall of 2013 to 'keep it in the family'. We built a cabin on the other side of the lake in 2000, however from the time I was a baby I was coming up to this 'side of the lake'. This cabin is next to other family members and was very important to us to keep it in the family. I have 2 boys that will eventually end up with this place. In the interim we have chosen to rent this so others can enjoy the area/cabin/lake as I have for 50yrs.

What makes this cabin unique

This is a very family friendly location. Lots of room to enjoy the outdoors with the large lot, fire pit, deck, lakeside bench. There is a hiking trail around the lake, accessible from the end of the road, as well as Reid Lake nature area 3miles away. The 'ball diamond' is located in the park 1 block away with 'old fashion' playground equipment, a basketball court, horseshoe pits and is the 'center' of the Biggest 4th in the North.

Great place to get away!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at the Knotty Pine Retreat. It really is a "retreat".

While we did not directly meet the owners, they kept in touch with us (via text) to ensure that our stay was pleasant that that we didn't need anything.

First, it is a cozy place. I don't mean "cozy" as in small, but there is a nice, warm, "at home" feeling about it. Everything was very clean. It was also well-stocked - from extra towels, to seasonings to band-aids - all of those "extras" that people can forget to bring...

We enjoyed having barbeques on the deck with a nice view of the lake.

The Knotty Pine Retreat is a bit remote (which we liked). While there are other cottages nearby, it was very quiet. You do need to drive a bit to get groceries or grab dinner (except for pizza at a well-supplied general store or food from a small, but nice, nearby bar).

We appreciated that there were listings of local restaurants and attractions at the cottage. Since we had never been to this area before and found this information to be very helpful.

We highly recommend the Churchill Pointe Inn (by Hubbard Lake) Mountain Inn (by Black River) and Tait's Bill of Fare (in Oscoda) for a dinner. We also visited the county fair and other attractions like Dinosaur Gardens. Besides the prior areas listed already, we visited Tawas, Alpena, etc.

Deer. There were deer everywhere. During our two week stay, we stopped counting at 100.....

We really enjoyed that we could bring our black lab, Freddie, as well.

Overall, we would recommend the Knotty Pine Retreat and hope to come back ourselves.

The cabin is really cute and cozy, a bit small for 6 adults though. The deck & view is amazing.

  • 4 of 5

There were a couple of safety issues that we thought should be addressed. The deck is wonderful but there needs to be hand rails on both sides of the front steps, it is rather dangerous. Also, the flood light out over the deck was not working and was reported day after we arrived and was never replaced the remaining 6 days we were there. The TV did not work either and it was reported the day after we arrived also. It was never repaired or replaced. That would not have been a BIG deal if we had not have had 2 days of cold, rain and wind and couldn't utilized the lake. We were able to watch movies so that was fine, I just enjoy watching the news and weather. We did enjoy the local pub and the people around the lake are very fun and friendly.

We rented a pontoon and had a great time tooling around the lake. The cabin included a paddle boat and row boat (both of which we had to dump out & clean out before we could use them) so we made good use of both, weather permitting.

The cabin was clean and comfy and had every thing we really needed as far as cooking and cleaning up. I would recommend this for perhaps a family but it was a bit snug for 6 adults to sleep comfortably. Not the owners fault by any means, they were very helpful and friendly except for replacing the TV or flood light. They may have just forgotten.

The fire pit area and the back yard were very nice and the view of the lake was just spectacular.

It was a wonderful week away from work and everyday chores and headaches and we enjoyed it tremendously.

Thank you Ken & Michelle, it was great!

Owner's Response: All, Glad you enjoyed your time at the Knotty Pine. Your comments on the view from the deck and fire pit area echo many of our guests comments, simply spectacular. The issue with the TV has been resolved, the indoor antenna was not working and was replaced. I apologize, I was informed that as long as the TV would work with the DVD it would be ok. The issues with the railing and flood light will be addressed by maintenance, thank you for letting us know. Again, glad to hear you enjoyed your week and were able to escape the chores and headaches from everyday life. Regards Ken & Michelle

The Get Away

  • 5 of 5

From time to time we all say I just need to "get away" and most of us aren't saying that because we just robbed a bank. We are saying it because we are just wore out and need to relax, have some fun and maybe even heal a little. That is the kind of place Ken & Michelle are offering at the Knotty Pine Retreat. A place to really "get away" without giving anything up. Don't be fooled by the pictures. The front room and bedrooms may look and feel like an up-north Michigan cabin but in the kitchen and bathroom you have all the comforts of home. Everything you need is there, clean and well maintained. Unless you own a landscaping company, you will find the manicured lawn, towering pines and hundreds of flowers leading down to your beach, fire pit and dock are more than you could have asked for. Plus the view of the lake and the spectacular night sky will keep you outside on the deck long after the sun has gone down.

Almost every night the barbeque on the deck took us from supper to s'mores to sunsets. While on the other nights (believe it or not) the local Shell gas station/party store/hardware store (within walking distance) saved our Mexican night by actually having burrito wraps and on a night we came home exhausted from too much fun on a Lake Huron beach it cooked us up some really good made to order pizza's. (That place just has it all)

Although we have been up to Knotty Pine Retreat before and know the area Ken and Michelle have a binder with short and long day trips and other sites to see and things to do in the area. However, I must confess, this time up WE DID NOTHING and IT WAS GREAT! Because Jewell Lake is such a good fishing lake, I actually hauled up my fishing gear, battery, charger and electric motor (the boat is one of the toys that come with the cottage) but never took them out of the car. It was so relaxing. We just read some of the books, took morning naps, walked the trails in the forest, played some of the games, laid in the sun, played in Lake Huron, watched the variety of birds come and go at the feeders, built sand castles, took afternoon naps, paddle boated around the lake (another toy), watched some of the movies (nice selection), listened to the loons calling at night, sat in wonder staring at the night sky and slept like babies wrapped in the cool, pine scented night air. It was just wonderful!

Thanks for sharing the Knotty Pine Retreat with us and letting us "get away".
