We are Brad & Cindy. After long careers in law enforcement in the lower mainland we have finally retired (sort of) and have moved to Oliver to enjoy a more laid back life. With only 3 traffic lights in downtown Oliver we rarely get caught in rush hour traffic anymore!
Cindy Pellegrin purchased this apartment in 2004
When knew when we retired, we wanted to re-locate to a more peaceful and quiet rural setting. In 2004 we found this property. We built the carriage house in 2005 and the 'Flaming Squirrel Ranch' was born. We moved into our brand new home beside the carriage house in 2011. Here we enjoy the slower pace, rural vistas and a dry temperate climate. Oh.....and the wine.....
The 9 plus acre property backs onto a hillside, and the top of the property offers spectacular sweeping views of the Okanagan Valley. Wildlife & birds are bountiful. Looking to the front of the property is an expansive, unobstructed view of Meyers Flats Provincial Park which is often dotted with free range cattle & deer. It is also fairly common to see coyotes & once in a while a black bear or bobcat. We are happy to share our 'little piece of quiet'' with you!
My wife and I stayed at the Flaming Squirrel for a few days in July. The weather was uncooperative, but Brad and Cindy were great.
Every morning we watched deer out of the kitchen window while we prepared breakfast. Cindy was even able to provide gluten free options to accommodate my wife's sensitivities.
Then it was a short drive to any of the wineries. Brad and Cindy can give you the rundown on most places in Oliver, from family-friendly (kids get their own juice and bread and friendly dogs to play with) to absolute overboard posh-sommelier-speak (which can be entertaining if that's what you like).
The guest-house is a complete stand-alone apartment. It has everything, including a great view of the valley.
Full disclosure: I worked with Brad for several years in the Lower Mainland. That entire time, he was talking about finding a nice place out of the city. He definitely found a great place. And if you go, ask him how the guest house got its name. He loves (sort of) telling the story.
We just spent 4 nights at the Flaming Squirrel, and were extremely pleased with everything! It was spotlessly clean, well furnished, had a super comfy bed (with good sheets), the kitchen was well equipped with everything you could possibly need to prepare meals, plus there was a very nice selection of edibles ... eggs, bread, fruit, milk, etc. The very quiet location suited us perfectly, and it was only a short drive to Oliver and the surrounding wineries. Cindy was an excellent host, and we felt comfortable immediately. We will make the Flaming Squirrel our go-to accommodations for the southern Okanagan!
One of the best accommodations we have stayed in. Very quiet and well located. Property is a quick drive to Oliver. The unit was well stocked with kitchen supplies and several food items such as milk, eggs, juice, bread, etc. Cindy made us feel very welcome and took care of any of our needs. We will definitely return in the future.
We finally got back to Flaming Squirrel almost 2 years after our first fantastic stay and it did not disappoint. Cindy & Brad are wonderful and friendly hosts, the apartment is spotlessly clean and well stocked, and the view from the balcony still stunning. It truly is a peaceful haven and a great place to recharge the batteries. It is conveniently located close to several wineries, other attractions in the area, and to our favourite taco truck this side of Mexico on the main highway into Oliver. Another great stay! We have yet to use the BBQ so a third visit is in order sometime in the future. Kudos to Cindy & Brad for making Flaming Squirrel such a special place.
This place is fantastic! Very clean accomodation, relaxing, quiet, restful, you have your privacy and although its a few minutes from the town of Oliver it's an easy drive in and back, we spent a couple of days doing winery tastings and a couple of days exploring the area (Ripley & Maddin Lake, fairview road, Okanagan Falls, Vasaux Lake, hiking Oliver Mountain area), highly recommend this place - if we go back we'd book it if it's available, great for a couple getaway, girl getaway or just a getaway for one. Great view from the deck and front room, kitchen area was well stocked with cooking supplies, never did get to use the BBQ although it was available to us, just didn't have enough time. 5/5
Since my first comment in April 2014 my wife and I have stayed at the Flaming Squirrel on at least five occasions. Cindy and Brad have continued to deliver the most well organized and hospitable service we have encountered! The suite is always well provisioned and spotlessly clean. The location is peaceful and conveniently situated to give you a privacy yet near enough to take advantage of the endless touring opportunities (wineries, hiking trails, Skaha lake beaches). We will continue to escape the city to the Flaming Squirrel as it provides a perfect opportunity for adventure and rest.
Over 50 Wineries within 30 minutes to enjoy. Some offer patio lunches, some with gift shops and all sampling their locally made wines. Take a self guided walking tour at the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory which is a short drive away. Bear, Madden and Sawmill Lakes are all within 10 km. Go fishing, sightseeing, look for painted turtles, and various bird species in the area. Numerous walking & hiking trails just steps away, and scenic view points. Cycle along the KVR trails. Numerous GEO Cache locations in the area. Alpaca farm in Willowbrook with handmade articles for sale. Wander through the old Fairview townsite, purchase local organic fruit and vegetables (in season), at Covert Farms. Enjoy weekly music concerts in the park, take a trail ride at Southern Pines Stables. Take in the Oliver flea market or visit the Farmers Market in Penticton or Osoyoos on the weekend! Numerous golf courses nearby- try a different one everyday if you like!
