Awesome weekend getaway!

  • 5 of 5

my family and I enjoyed our Presidents day weekend trip to this beautiful home in the woods! Dave was the best and the home is in great shape! we had everything we needed and then some! close to town and the Chili cook off! I was a little nervous as some reviews cited items in disrepair... we found the home, clean, warm, and in excellent condition! Thanks again for exceeding our expectations.

Pro's and Cons

  • 3 of 5

We had a good week overall, despite the fact that Glen Arbor was recovering from the Storm of 2015, and it rained 5 days out of 7. This had nothing to do with the accomodation, which was awesome in some respects, and not so much in others. The master bedroom suite is beautiful, and the house roomy enough for 4 active children. The other end of the house is not so impressive. The second bedroom was missing a handle on the inside of the door and there were large stains on the carpet. The dishwasher is a relic which could not clean the dishes adequately, and one of the dining chairs was in need of gluing. This made me wonder how carefully the house had been checked after the last renters. The garage door opener was not working, but this was quickly remedied by Dave. We would have liked to have had the fireplace working, but this request went unanswered. The children had a great time fishing off the bridge and caught many small fish. We brought our own kayaks, as they were not provided, but it is not really a good place for boating. The setting is beautiful and peaceful and we enjoyed watching the swans glide by in the evening. It would have been nice to have had a Glen Lake beach nearby for the children. All in all, given the price of the rental, we would have expected a higher standard.

Pros and Cons

  • 3 of 5

We had a good week overall and the area is great. We agree with others that Dave was pleasant and accommodating. Pros: We really enjoyed the setting-- kayaked a lot on little Brooks lake (a pond, really, but one that has plenty of wildlife to spy on-- including otters, big snapping turtles, small cute turtles, kingfishers). The layout of the house is good, bathrooms are nice, and the deck is fabulous. I am only giving 3 stars because there were some cons to go with the pros. First, Dave and his dad next door have two big dogs that are let into their yard every morning around 6:30 or 7, and they bark -- loudly and regularly. No sleeping in! They barked on and off the whole day as well, but the morning was most annoying. (The dogs were otherwise well-behaved.) Second, the house is clearly a "rental" in a few ways. There are some big stains on the carpet. The dishwasher doesn't work well and leaves a detergent residue on the dishes such that we had to rinse them all again before using. And because there is no A/C (which we didn't find a problem at all, even though the weather was hot our week), we wanted to use the ceiling fan in the great room, which didn't work and, according to Dave, hasn't worked in several years. Dave did have a floor fan brought over for us immediately to try to remedy that. None of these house-related things affected our experience in a major way, but if the owners actually used the place themselves they probably would not put up with these issues. And given both the price (which didn't include boats so we rented those separately) and the description, I was expecting a little more. Nonetheless, we had a good week. If the rental price had been about $600 cheaper for the week or at least included kayaks, I think my expectations would have been met. As an aside, upon Dave's recommendation we rented kayaks from Crystal River Outfitters and they provided excellent service -- easy to deal with and delivered/picked up the kayaks from the house.

Disappointment

  • 3 of 5

When we rented this unit we were deceived. It does not have four bedrooms, it has three. It does not have Glen Lake access other than riding in a kayak down a 4' wide ditch. It does not have any Glen Lake beach to swim at, it is on a swampy looking pond! We had fun nonetheless because the area is great and there were many places to drive to, but when you rent what you think is a Glen Lake cottage, the least you expect is a beach near the property where you can swim. The house was beautiful and well equipped, it just didn't really have Glen Lake access. Yes the property sleeps ten as long as two of the ten are willing to sleep on a blow-up mattress on the floor of the living room. False advertising, or just deception?

Beautiful and Relaxing!

  • 5 of 5

This house is the perfect "home away from home" getaway! The home is beautiful and really is a Beauty on the Brooks! We had such a great time not only at the house but doing a wine tour with Glen Lake Shuttle! Dave will always go above and beyond to make your experience everything you want! We used this house for a group of friends to stay for a surprise 30th birthday party for my husband and it worked out perfect! It truly is an all round place to stay- anything from a romantic getaway to a family retreat! I highly recommend-you will not be disappointed!

Clean and Kid Friendly

  • 5 of 5

My family and I had a wonderful stay at this house. The owner is very friendly and keeps the property very clean and comfortable. We stayed here with my two young children, parents, and in-laws, and I found the house to be very kid friendly, open, and spacious. The master suite is on the opposite end of the house from the other two bedrooms, and the common areas easily accommodated all of us. The third bedroom (not shown in pictures) has two sets of bunk-beds. There is a two-car garage, which was nice for storing our bikes, coolers, beach gear, etc. The house is very close to sleeping bear dunes, excellent bike trails, and has access to Glen Lake. It is a half-hour from Traverse City – lots to do including wineries, beaches, shopping, golf, great restaurants – you name it! Thanks Dave!
