Dirk Albert de Veer purchased this house in 2001
Because of its pleasant and secure environment, not to warm and humid and above all with a beautiful nature and nice people we started living in Paso Ancho in 2001. The holiday homes have been created during a number of years.
We enjoy the private and peaceful setting of our property and houses as well the mild climate and near by access to the various natural parks. Restaurants and supermarkets are still close by.
My husband, Glenn and I, were planning our first trip to Panama and a friend forwarded the link to Las Plumas to us. We read it and it was just want we were looking for. We were able to make all the arrangements with Dirk over the internet. And when we arrived, it was better than we thought. The house itself, we were in Woodpecker, was beautifully landscaped as was the whole compound. The interior was nicely furnished; clean and comfortable, and it had everything that we needed for our month long stay. This area is an agricultural one so we were able to get fresh fruits and vegetables. Right on the corner in Volcan is a grocery store that caters to Americans with many familiar products and signs in English. There were plenty of activities to do in the area including hikes right from the house. A short drive from the house will take you to hiking trails and several birding sites. Dirk has the contact information for birding guides in the house. We used Carlos and enjoyed our outings with him. In addition to other birds, we saw the Quetzal which was my goal. Also only a short drive away are good restaurants and even a day spa for manicures and pedicures. But you don't have to leave the house to see natural beauty or birds. Look out the window and you can see the mountains and birds at the feeders that are provided. But all of this we sort of expected from Dirk's web site. What we didn't expect was what a great place this was to come home to. We took several overnight trips during the month and it was so nice to come back to Las Plumas to rest and regroup. We would sit outside on the covered patio, look at the flowers and the mountain and the clouds and the birds and unwind and relax. It is just such a comfortable place made more so by the hospitality of Dirk and his staff. I can't say enough about Las Plumas and we highly recommend it.
We stayed in Hawk for a month earlier this year. Very well laid out and equipped home above the Chiriqui Viejo River.
Dirk and his team were very responsive and helpful. Volcan is a laid back more Panama real town and was easy to get to know and interact with locals especially to practice our Spanish. Enough good Restaurants and stores in town. Cerro Punta, the mountain towns and parks are close-by if you have a vehicle. We rent an SUV for clearance and access to some of the more rural roads. Wildlife and Forest is easily accessible too.
La Concepcion Shops are about 35 minutes away and David and Boquete about an hour by car.
We are returning soon to stay in Mot Mot for another month and look forward to seeing DIrk and Volcan again.
My wife and I have stayed in three different houses within the gated Las Plumas facility, and we have enjoyed them all. Our most recent eight-month stay was in the Tanager, a two-bedroom home that is perfect for a couple or a family of three. It has one bathroom and a kitchen/living room front area. It also has a propane-powered washer and dryer in the laundry room. You have a nice front porch with furniture to enjoy a morning or evening coffee.
The Tanager is the least expensive of the homes for rent in this gated community and, accordingly, does not have some of the frills or the large yard of the other bigger, more expensive rental homes. But, like every home in Las Plumas, the Tanger is well built, well maintained, and enjoys the same benefits of the idyllic and secure setting. Dirk is a wonderful host who is very prompt and attentive to any questions or concerns you might have. I'm not aware of a better rental option in this area of Panamá. We highly recommend all of the homes Dirk has for rent in Las Plumas.
Las Plumas is situated in a quiet area of Paso Ancho that sits just above Volcán. It is cooler and quieter than Volcan. If you're young hiker/backpacker types, you don't need a car. You can catch a bus just a few blocks away from Las Plumas. If you're a retired couple, you might consider a rental car, knowing that you will have a designated parking area within the secure, gated community.
A fabulous stay in the Motmot house. So relaxing with the mountain air and the sound of the river running behind the house. It was great for our family of five. We felt the house and grounds were more spacious than the pictures show. Great tips from the owner, Dirk, for hikes and food. He was a very pleasant host. The Volcan area is more "native" than Boquete, and that was perfect for us!
We stayed 2 times in Motmot with our family of 5. The property of Las Plumas is well maintained and the house is equipped with everything needed. It was great to sit on the terrace next to the river and enjoy the beautiful nature around the house with the rustic sound of the river in the background. An A/C was not needed, the area has a nice climate. Also around Volcan is a lot to see. Dirk replies quick on e-mails and is a good host. We really recommend Las Plumas.
My family and I rented the House called Quetzal and it was big and roomy for our family. The views were spectacular ! Dirk was a wonderful Host and very helpful. The homes of Las Plumas are some of the nicest ones in the area. I would highly recommend to anyone wanted to get away from city life and enjoy peace and quite. The grounds are well kept and you could hear the river near by. My family is looking forward to returning to Las Plumas in the near future.
