This is a lovely modern apartment on the first floor of an old Basque house, Maison Erremunenia, in the charming sea-side village of Guethary, 8 kms from Biarritz to the north and 5kms from St. Jean de Luz to the south. It is a spacious 1 bedroom apartment with truly stunning views directly onto the sea and the coast towards Biarritz. The local beach is minutes away and the fabulous surfing beaches of the Pays Basque coast are all easily accessible. The large ' L' shaped lounge, with it's American kitchen, is stylishly furnished with modern furniture and fittings of greater quality than is normal for holiday accommodation. There is a balcony looking onto the sea for 'al-fresco' dining on those balmy days which are typical of so much of the year in this area. The apartment is tiled throughout with high quality ceramic floor tiles and both the living area and the bedroom have breathtaking views onto the Atlantic with Biarritz in the distance.
The Region: Three beautiful towns are within a few kilometres: Bayonne, built on two rivers - its magnificent ancient cathedral overlooking the winding medieval streets; fashionable and glamorous Biarritz, famous for its shopping, restaurants and surf, and boasting one of the finest seafronts in France; historic St Jean de Luz, the most typical and charming of the Pays Basque seaside resorts with its glorious sandy beach and picturesque fishing port. The Pyrenees with their unbeatable mountain scenery, old Basque villages and wildlife are just a short drive away. They will transport you into a rural heaven as beautiful as anywhere in Europe. The most local peak, La Rhune, can be scaled with the help of an old mountain railway, offering views at the summit to take your breath away. The city of Pau is an important centre for skiing and is about 75 minutes drive away. It is possible to ski in the morning and be on the beach in the afternoon at certain times of the year.
Local Information: The Pays Basque is known to have a warm climate with much sunshine in the winter; T shirts are possible even in February and November and hardy locals swim in the sea throughout the year. This area tends to avoid aggressively hot summer temperatures by the coast, but the sea can become very warm, particularly in more protected bays, such as the one in Saint Jean de Luz.
Spain: Being so close to the Spanish border opens up a different world of culture, gastronomy and architecture.
The old Spanish town of Hondarribia (Fuenterrabia) can be reached by a charming 5 minute ferry ride from Hendaye or by car (25 mins drive from Guethary). This old town, with its castle and old church is famous for its many tapas bars - the locals seem to spend all day eating, drinking and socialising.
San Sebastian, one of the most sophisticated and architecturally attractive cities in Spain, has a glorious esplanade looking onto golden sands and blue sea. A stroll around the old city will show you that, here too, tapas is a way of life. However, for those who think to book well in advance, San Sebastian offers some of the world's finest and best known restaurants; Arzac, Akelare and Mugaritz to mention but three.
Within 2 hours drive is Bilbao, most famous nowadays for the truly remarkable Guggenheim Museum; a triumph of contemporary architecture.
The fourth time we have stayed in this apartment. Guethary is charming, even out of season, and eating out in the area is first class. The apartment is exceedingly comfortable and is regularly updated and added to; rather luxurious in fact. We are still bowled over by the views and situation. We hope to return for a week late summer.
This was the third time that my husband and I stayed at this lovely appartment. It is brilliantly situated to be able to explore the Biarritz area. The appartment is comfortable and well equipped and is always spotlessly clean. Lots to do in the area too. A fab local restaurant 'Le Madrid' is really worth a visit
The owners are very helpful and everything is explained clearly with useful info left for us. Brill holiday
The apartment was very tastefully modernised, well equipped and beatifully clean with wonderful sea views over the bay. It is quite close to the railway line but we didn't find it noisy and were never disturbed by the trains.
David and Brian were excellent hosts; they were staying at the apartments while we were there and were very welcoming and willing to give any help or advise that was needed.
We enjoyed walks along the coast in both directions and had a lovely day in San Sebastian where we dined on the local tapas, I would definitely recommend spending a day there. There are regular trains running from Hendaye station with easy parking.
This was our first visit to this part of France. It's beautiful. Stunning coastline with so many beautiful towns to explore. The apartment is just perfect, beautifully furnished and equipped. The standard of audio/visual equipment is so high for a rental.... mission speakers, apple mac etc!! Also has a fantastic book and DVD library, sadly we were always out walking at night - Guethary has to be explored to the max! Would recommend without hesitation & hopefully we will be able to return again in the future.
This year saw our third visit to Guethary and this truly lovely apartment overlooking the sea. The accommodation was as outstanding as ever and we are always impressed by the way there seems to be some little upgrading of the apartment every year - this year a new flat-screen TV and a Mac Computer connected to the internet. I wonder how many holiday apartments offer this type of quality equipment for their holiday makers. This is still our favourite holiday, streets above all others we have ever visited and so will probably come back for a forth visit over the next few years. Guethary itself is a charming little seaside town, idyllic in every way. We feel as if we are visiting an old friend every time we return. To be very highly recommended.
This apartment was a home from home, from the moment we arrived it felt right and when we saw the view from the kitchen window we knew we had found ' a true gem '. It is one of the best and comprehensively equipped self-catering apartments we have stayed in, the equipment first class and very simple to operate, David the owner left nothing to chance he left easy to follow instructions for everything. Guethary is very compact and has a variety of restaurants, we only ate out one evening because we had a lovely lunch each day at the relaxed, but quite busy beach bar/restaurants.
The train station is just around the corner for Bierritz or St Jean la Luz, we recommend catching the bus to Bierritz as the train station in Bierritz is not very central, but in St Jean la Luz it is smack in the centre.
I could go on and on, but will spare you, a lovely, peaceful spot, but close to the action, should you so desire. A lot of thought has gone into this apartment and it shows. Well done!!!!
Guethary is a charming sea-side village set in the Pays Basque on the coast between Biarritz (8kms) and St.Jean de Luz (5kms). It is about 20 kms from Spain, and only 30 mins drive from the wonderful coastal city of San Sebastian. The nearest airport is Biarritz, about 8kms or 15 mins drive from the village. The Biarritz area is famous for mile after mile of spectacular beaches, its surfing, golf, cuisine and, of course the Pyrenees; these dominate the skyline and offer some of the most breathtaking scenery in Europe. Walks, from short hour- long treks to hiking for several days are possible. Guethary itself has everything you need if you choose to stay in the village - shops, restaurants and beaches. The choice of restaurants in this area is vast and will suit all budgets. The regional cooking uses the wonderful local fish and shows a Spanish influence in some restaurants; in fact, just over the border you also have the choice of fine Spanish restaurants and Tapas bars.
