Blissful, beautiful villa in spectacular location
Our 2-week stay at Chirij Ju Yu (which means "under the mountain" in Kachiqel) was transcendentally wonderful. (And I'm normally a feet-on-the-ground retired businessman.) The house is spacious and very nicely furnished, with many beautiful works of art from the Mayan Highlands. The gardens are filled with flowering and fruiting plants, which attract a host of brightly colored birds. The infinity pool has a marvelous view of the lake and 3 volcanoes (Atitlan, San Pedro and Toliman). The satellite TV worked perfectly to bring us the Super Bowl. While we made relatively little use of the hot tub, it was in good working order. As was the gas-fired BBQ. Special recognition must go to the 3 loyal members of the household staff: Edgar, the regular caretaker/guardian; Antonio, his weekend replacement; and Veronica, the housekeeeper who comes to clean twice a week (We paid her extra to come one more time because the wind kicked up a bit of dust). They all made us feel welcome and did everything possible to ensure our comfort. Having the private dock made it very easy to get around the lake; public boats took us right to the house and we frequently hired private boats because we were 5 or 6 in number and had so many bags as a result of shopping. Private boats were actually essential at night when we went to evening meals at restaurants in Jaibalito and Tzunana - don't miss the chance to eat dinner at Anzan Kitchen. Also lunch at El Artesano. But the truth is that most of the time we stayed at the house, chilling out, eating meals, drinking wine, reading our books, talking among ourselves, then falling silent to admire the view or getting up to wander around the garden. The 2 weeks went by quickly, albeit restfully and restoratively. Don't miss the chance to stay here! We hope to come back.
Thank you very much for your eloquent review. It made us miss being there.
Best Airbnb on the lake and one of the best I’ve ever been to! The location is perfect and the master bedroom is the most incredible room you will ever sleep in. We spent countless hours in the heated pool and hot tub. We kayaked and cooked and both property staff (Edgar and Antonio) we’re so incredible kind and helpful. Look no further.
We loved the villa and the heated pool. The view is amazing.
The villa is very well appointed and the art and decor very tasteful. There are a lot of stairs, but that is the situation around the Lake.
We had a guide Flavio take us on several hikes/ tours which we all enjoyed. The staff were very attentive. It is close to San Marcos for provisions and restaurants. The launchas are the way to get around.
The manager in Pana could have been more responsive but in the end everything worked out as requested. It was a very special Christmas for our family in a very special place.
We had an excellent time staying here. The view is stunning. The art and ambiance of the home is wonderful. Edgar and Antonio are a huge asset to this place. They were friendly, helpful, and eager for us to have a great experience. We kayaked, swam in the pool several times, used the hot tub and sat by the fire when we got out. We also enjoyed the beautiful plants, trees, birds and butterflies all around the place. We did have some rain but we knew we would since it's the rainy season. San Marcos is a short walk away where you can find a few restaurants or buy groceries for cooking in. We highly recommend this place and hope to return.
Phenomenal house and views
We (me, husband, 2 boys age 8 and 11) just came back from 12 days in Guatemala (8 of them at the house). As others said, the home and grounds are absolutely stunning and comes very well-equipped. Edgar and the weekend keeper (argh I'm blanking on name) are very friendly/helpful and understand a very decent level of English (better than my Spanish!).
Weather was perfect, 60 at night, 80 during the day, and it only rained 3 times -- all at night.
Yes, bring earplugs, and sleeping mask if you don't wish to be up with the sun (starts getting light around 5:30am). Around the lake, we traveled to San Juan, San Pedro and Santiago. Visited chocolate factory, weaving co-ops Almost walked to town daily for small items or to eat. I highly suggest stopping at a "Real" grocery store in Panajachel on your way, especially for meat or items you cannot live without (this would be Nutella for my kids), as the small shops in San Marcos have limited selections but they do have enough basics to survive: milk, bread, cheese, veggies, fruit, rice... Also they do not take dollars. The ATM is inside a small store past the main plaza on the right hand side after the spillway.
We stayed in Antigua the first 3 nights, which was the perfect amount of time for us (kids can only walk through so many buildings/churches/museums). It is a beautiful town and I recommend a guide at least for one day. We saved lots of time and learnt a whole lot more than we would have on our own -- we used Columbus Luxury Travel for several excursions and transfers and were extremely pleased.
Blaine reimbursed our security deposit within 24 hours and is very responsive, so do yourself a favor and rent this one!!!
