I first visited Orcas Island as a 10 year old child staying at a summer camp. My wonderful memories brought my husband and me to the island again when our children were toddlers. We had such a delightful time that we looked for property to buy for ourselves. In 1969, because of its seclusion and view, we bought a lot at Raccoon Point. Our Lindal Cedar Home was built on it in 1972. Only 2 or 3 families came out to Raccoon Point for many years. We had a completely private beach, watched the whales, otters, seals, eagles, deer, enjoyed Mt Baker in the rising and setting sun, saw the ships passing in the distance and the kayakers and fishermen fishing from their boats. The beach is still private with only a few dinghies and kayaks pulled up on shore. Low tide uncovers starfish, sea anemones, barnacles, crabs, and other tide pool life. Driftwood abounds while the beach is forever being changed by the tides. The peacefulness, the views, the beach are the same way today as 40 years ago.
Karen Key Speck purchased this house in 1969
Once you arrive at the Cedar House, you may take off your wrist watch, then forget about time and not put your watch back on until it is time to catch the ferry to the mainland.
We just returned from a stay here with two children. Like the other reviews said, the first time you drive here it can be tricky to find. That said, it feels very private and secluded, and in a very scenic and quiet part of the island. We like to stay in areas like this, so it suited our taste. The house itself was very well-appointed and extremely clean. We had everything we needed... our favorite part was watching the sunset late into the evening from the wrap-around deck. We saw a couple dolphins and sea lions in the waters below us, and many black tail deer came around the house to my daughter's pleasure. The photos of the deck and the view don't do this justice- It's so lovely and peaceful, we looked forward to coming home each day and gazing out into the waters. We also loved the private beach at the end of the road, and spent many mornings exploring. We would highly recommend this with children though it does have a steep downstairs (with a door), so you will need to be mindful depending on ages. But there was a high chair and a play area with toys upstairs which was a nice benefit. We loved our stay! Hope to be back.
We enjoyed a fun week with family in this great house! We had beautiful views of the mountain and sunsets, enjoyed watching the harbor seals, and were visited by many deer. We had plenty of room for all of us. We had 3 little ones under 6 so we loved the beach at Moran Park. We enjoyed Eastsound and traveling around the island. The deck is great! The hardest part was finding it the first time. Thank you for a great stay. The house was immaculate when we arrived.
Everything said by other reviewers is true - a gorgeous location, peaceful, wonderful views. The kitchen is small if you're accustomed to a gathering spot for cooperative meal preparation. The main problem is how little in basic supplies like soap, paper products, etc. are provided. The lengthy instructions sent ahead of time mention this, but it's odd compared to other VRBO properties we've enjoyed. The property is some distance to the nearest store. If you arrive late to this property and forget or can't get to the store for such things, it's inconvenient as is having to make up beds required of guests at this property. Plus, it's not gracious and welcoming. If it costs a bit more to provide such amenities, many like us would not object.
Our family get together included 2 parents and 3 twenty-something kids. Everyone loved this rental. It's secluded, has beautiful views of the surrounding water, opportunity to see wildlife and includes access to a community beach. Just walking around in this small community is fun and interesting. The house has lots of nice porch space, good separation of bedrooms and a large room on the bottom floor for tv or movie watching with maybe 100 videos. There is also a nice laundry area and plenty of books to read. You'll find a fire pit behind the house if you want to roast hot dogs or marshmallows. You can't miss the wood in the shed, but you'll need kindling. There is a wood stove inside if needed. The house has nice, comfortable beds and furniture. There's plenty of room for 6 people to have a place to sit in the living room, if you have more some might want to go downstairs to the family room or sit on the kitchen table chairs. There's a great loft area upstairs outside the bedroom, with children's toys and an area for reading. Follow the direction provided by the rental agency and you will find the house. It's not hard but we wondered if we were on the right road, there aren't many street signs. After that, everything was lots of fun!! Keep the kitchen trash can away from the wall heaters, we melted one and found a replacement at the local hardware store in town. It would be good if there was a sign on the trash can, we were not thinking about that outcome and it got cool at night so we turned on the heater for a while. We left our trash in a 33 gallon bag in the trash can behind the house because the recycling center hours did not work with our departure. The management company was good enough to dispose of it for us and we were only charged $12 for that large bag. A good service and reasonable cost. I think everyone on the island pays by the bag for garbage disposal. Our visit was in early September, 2015. This rental was a very good value for the money spent and a wonderful stay for us!!
Four longtime friends had a wonderful short stay in September. Quiet and cozy. Loved the deck overlooking the beautiful water.
Beautifully situated on the northeast side of the island, it has 2 sides with unobstructed view of the water. Not overly large, but it was comfortable for the 6 of us and accurately described. We were visited by bald eagles, harbor seals, and a mink. It has a secluded feel even with the neighbors. The drive from town seems long at first (gravel road with turns and 15 mph speed limit) but isn't a factor. Many of the roads on the island are slow and this house is closer than many. Look out for turkeys on the road! We would like to return.
Our location is special in that is end of the road private but only five miles from the main hub of activity of Orcas Island - Eastsound. The house is accessed the last 2.5 miles on a dirt/gravel road affording a sense of adventure.
