Located on one of the many secluded bays that make up Pender Harbour, this modern two bedroom cottage sits on a third of an acre with 200 feet of low bank waterfront. The setting, at the mouth of the intertidal zone, offers a constant view of deep water as well as the dramatic landscape and wildlife changes that come with daily tide swings. The property slopes gently down to the water which is always warm for swimming when the tide flows in over the rocks, hot from a day in the sun.
Inside the cottage, the open plan comprises a very well equipped kitchen (with sharp knives), two curtained bedrooms with queen beds and a bathroom with a rain shower and a river rock floor. In the living room, two sets of French doors open onto the wraparound deck...a good place to relax with a glass of wine as the sun slips behind the mountain at the end of the day.
Step outside for a choice of diversions. Take the kayak or the canoe to the quiet end of the bay and discover up close the rich diversity of life at the estuary shoreline. Grab your pole and fish off the rocks. Or, simply beachcomb for oyster shells that are abundant on the property.
Nearby, a ten minute drive takes you a world away to the shopping area of Madeira Park and an array of artisan studios and galleries. For something more active, try out some of the many mountain biking and hiking trails and be smitten with breathtaking views of the entire Harbour. Or, go deep in the ocean and find out why the area consistently ranks near the top for scuba divers.
As for more sedentary pleasures back at the cottage, there are a variety of hammocks and chaises for following the sun around the property and watching the magnificent bald eagles that make the Bay their home in the summer.
I haven't given out many 5 star ratings on Trip Advisor or VRBO until now because no place has been quite perfect. But here, everything was as described. The house was clean and ready-to-live-in condition. Boats and paddles, muck-boots, books, wireless, and a lot more were provided. The neighbors we met were all nice and neighborhood was quiet and the power boats/jet skis don't come roaring this far up the harbor because of the relatively shallow water. Rachel, the owner, was great to work with. Arriving after a few days of rain, we only saw two mosquitoes in 8 days and they were slow, dopey things easily slapped.
The view is splendid and is not looking out on ripped out patches of forest from the logging like some parts of B.C.
Pay attention to the tide tables if you go out on the water from here, sometimes the tide is briefly low enough to make the dock inaccessible. In that case, bring the muck boats along or wait 1/2 hour for the tide to rise. At higher tides, you can canoe back into the grassy marsh to bird or bear watch. It is about a 45 minute paddle in a canoe to get to the pub and restaurants of garden bay.
There are plenty of hikes and things to do within ~1 hour drive and several within a few minutes. Groceries are less than a 10 minute drive away.
