About Donald Oliver
Sandra and Don have raised 4 children and have 2 granddaughters. Sandra is a minister with the United Church of Christ in New Haven, and Don is a professor at Wesleyan University. Don discovered Acadia and the island at age 16 as an National Science Foundation student at Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, and we have been coming back ever since with children and now grandchildren in tow. One of our passions is hiking throughout the world. Acadia with its superb beauty and vast set of trails offers unparalleled hiking opportunities.

Why Donald Oliver chose Bar Harbor
Everyone should have a special place in this world: a wellspring to draw strength from, and which rejuvenates them. Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island is that place for us, and we want you to see and experience it first hand.
What makes this House unique
Moving beyond the limitations of Acadia cottages, we decided to buy a larger modern, private house and equip it with all the comforts and conveniences of home to provide a superior vacation experience for the whole family. The property is also ideally located: 2 miles from the Hull’s cove (main entrance) to Acadia National Park and 4 miles from downtown Bar Harbor. You can walk 5 minutes down our quiet road to Frenchman’s Bay or pick up the Island Explorer (free) bus and go anywhere on the Island without driving. The latter option is great for those long one-way hikes or bike rides across the island.
100% refund if canceled at least 60 days before arrival date.
Nice Home Great for Acadia and Bar Harbor
Overall very good stay. Nice home with plenty of bedrooms, bathrooms, and amenities. Great yard out back. Location is great for Acadia and Bar Harbor access, though close proximity to Rte 3 meant road noise is noticeable. Owner is responsive and provided good advice on the area. It was very warm at times during our stay which made us long for A/C in the home, but we knew the home did not have it up front. Negatives are minor and may not matter to other guests.
Great house, great location, great stay!
We had a wonderful time at Mayapple Cottage. The house was conveniently located and well appointed. The owner as well as the property manager were responsive and easy to work with. We would definitely rent here again!
This was such a wonderful family vacation and our experience was fantastic
This property and the owners should be commended and I would highly recommend staying here. Thank you so much.
Family vacation in Bar Harbor
Our stay at Mayapple cottage was wonderful! The house was very clean and had everything that we needed. Our group of 8 had plenty of space. We enjoyed having outdoor space, as well. The big yard, back deck, and front porch were enjoyed by all. The proximity to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park was great! We enjoyed being in a quiet neighborhood, after busy days in town and at the park. Thank you for a wonderful stay at your beautiful home!
This house is perfect. The house is very clean and well stocked. It had everything we needed in The kitchen, bathrooms and bedrooms . It sits on a lovely piece of land. The back yard has ample green space for the kids play and it looks out into a forest. There’s a nice fire pit, back deck, gas grill and big front porch. The location is close to Bar Harbor town and Acadia national park but very quiet and peaceful. We enjoyed walking from the house down the quiet side road to watch the sun rise. It’s a nice morning or evening stroll. This house is wonderful. I’d recommend it to anyone. I hope to return. Great owners and property manager. They really take excellent care of their property.
We had a great relaxing time. The location was great!
Acadia National Park with its spectacular scenery and extensive system of trails for hiking and carriage roads for nature walks, biking, or horse-drawn carriages is a must. Be sure to check out the summit of Cadillac mountain, and Jordan Pond house with its blueberry popovers. Drive the Park loop road or walk the Shore Path past Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, and Otter Cliffs for unforgettable images that dance in your heart. Canoe in Long Pond, or sea kayak to the Porcupine Islands in Frenchman's Bay. Take the kids to pristine Sand Beach or go for a swim at Echo lake. Shop and dine out in Bar Harbor or visit other cute shops in Northeast or Southwest Harbors. In the latter location be sure to pick up a fresh pita, smoothy or home-baked dessert at Eat-A-Pita. Take a Nature cruise or whale watch out of Bar Harbor or Southwest Harbor and see puffins, eagles, seals, whales, and more. And of course no visit to the Maine shore is complete without that lobster. We have described these activities and more in our 'Must-do' notebook in our living room.
