About Donald Oliver
Sandra and Don have raised 4 children and have 2 granddaughters. Sandra is a minister with the United Church of Christ in New Haven, and Don is a professor at Wesleyan University. Don discovered Acadia and the island at age 16 as an National Science Foundation student at Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, and we have been coming back ever since with children and now grandchildren in tow. One of our passions is hiking throughout the world. Acadia with its superb beauty and vast set of trails offers unparalleled hiking opportunities.

Why Donald Oliver chose Bar Harbor
Everyone should have a special place in this world: a wellspring to draw strength from, and which rejuvenates them. Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island is that place for us, and we want you to see and experience it first hand.
What makes this House unique
Moving beyond the limitations of Acadia cottages, we decided to buy a larger modern, private house and equip it with all the comforts and conveniences of home to provide a superior vacation experience for the whole family. The property is also ideally located: 2 miles from the Hull’s cove (main entrance) to Acadia National Park and 4 miles from downtown Bar Harbor. You can walk 5 minutes down our quiet road to Frenchman’s Bay or pick up the Island Explorer (free) bus and go anywhere on the Island without driving. The latter option is great for those long one-way hikes or bike rides across the island.

Great place with plenty of room and amenities!
Perfect location for hiking Acadia...close to bar harbor but away from the downtown noise. Everything was as described or better...I would highly recommend this place for a family vacation...
Cozy & Roomy--a nice place for a family to stay
My wife and daughter joined me on a trip to Bar Harbor where a national meeting was scheduled that I was attending. Instead of staying at the hotel, I searched VRBO for a house. Mayapple was a perfect choice. It is just north of Bar Harbor and it only took me ten minutes to drive to the meeting location. The house is delightful; surrounded by woods with visiting deer and chipmunks. The house was perfectly described with all the accouterments ready for us. The wifi and direct TV connections were good; the CD music selection was large. In every way it felt like home. The house could easily accommodate a total of eight adults or children with the three full bathrooms. We would take a quarter mile walk each evening around the loop that led to the bay to look at the water as the sun was setting. One evening, we had our friends from the meeting over for pupus and drinks, and they were envious of our choice to have rented the house. We would certainly come back.
Perfect house for Bar Harbor Acadia experience.
The house had everything listed and more. Clean, well organized, and comfortable. The beds were very comfortable! Plenty of hot water for all of us. Close to Bar Harbor yet beautiful woods setting.
We were very impressed with the house and the location to Acadia National Park. The house is in great shape and very well taken care of. Very roomy. We had 6 adults and there was plenty of room. Acadia is definitely a place that you should visit and Mayapple Cottage is a great place to stay.
Great Vacation House!
Our family of 8 (6 adults, 2 children) just returned from a week at Mayapple in Bar Harbor. This house is great for a large family, 4 bedrooms & 3 bathrooms make it very attractive. The house is a great location, a short drive to Acadia & Bar Harbor. The kitchen is nicely updated, every drawer is filled with cooking utensils, cutting boards, anything you might need for cooking. In fact the house is filled with anything & everything you might need! There is an abundance of games & books for all ages (we had a 9 & 5 year old), CD's, video's, 2 flat screen TV's. There is a nice sitting room with a TV on the second floor which makes for a nice quiet space if you need it. Two of the bedrooms have huge walk in closets that are loaded with extra towels, blankets, & pillows. The beds are very comfortable. Each family had their own bathroom which made it nice. Each bedroom has fans to use at night, it was a little cooler for us so it comfortable for our stay. There is a washer & dryer with laundry detergent provided which made it convenient. The house was very clean (thanks Jill!) and obviously well kept. The owners, Don & Sandra, are very accommodating, answering all my emails promptly. All in all I was very happy with this vacation rental & would highly recommend this house!
Clean, spacious and comfortable. Great location next to Acadia.
We have vacationed in Bar Harbor on multiple occasions and this was one of our favorite places. We were very comfortable staying at Mayapple Cottage. The kitchen was well stocked, the beds were comfortable and we had more than enough room to spread out. We loved the location. It was a quick drive to the park entrance. We also went for daily walks around the neighborhood and were happy to find the ocean shoreline just a few blocks away-- very easy walk. The drive into Bar Harbor was also easy to navigate. All in all, it was a lot of house for a reasonable price. We also appreciated having one of the bedrooms on the main level of the home-- our son broke his leg right before we made the trip there and it was nice for him to be spared climbing up and down the stairs on crutches. We had some occasions to interact online with Don- the owner. I found him to be courteous, gracious, and helpful. Overall, we highly recommend Mayapple Cottage and wouldn't hesitate to stay there again in the future.
Acadia National Park with its spectacular scenery and extensive system of trails for hiking and carriage roads for nature walks, biking, or horse-drawn carriages is a must. Be sure to check out the summit of Cadillac mountain, and Jordan Pond house with its blueberry popovers. Drive the Park loop road or walk the Shore Path past Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, and Otter Cliffs for unforgettable images that dance in your heart. Canoe in Long Pond, or sea kayak to the Porcupine Islands in Frenchman's Bay. Take the kids to pristine Sand Beach or go for a swim at Echo lake. Shop and dine out in Bar Harbor or visit other cute shops in Northeast or Southwest Harbors. In the latter location be sure to pick up a fresh pita, smoothy or home-baked dessert at Eat-A-Pita. Take a Nature cruise or whale watch out of Bar Harbor or Southwest Harbor and see puffins, eagles, seals, whales, and more. And of course no visit to the Maine shore is complete without that lobster. We have described these activities and more in our 'Must-do' notebook in our living room.
