Private, Quiet Lodge With Beautiful Mountain & Lake View
About Cheryl Davidsen
We are Eugene and Cheryl Davidsen and have managed Payne Lake Lodge for 13 years now. I (Cheryl) was born and raised here in southern Alberta and grew up in Mountain View. Payne Lake Lodge has an interesting story. It is owned by a wonderful Japanese lady named Yumi who still resides in Japan. She purchased the property back in the '90's when she came to visit Canada. In Japan she had met my nephew who was was on a two year LDS mission there. After his mission ended she requested to visit Canada. She fell in love with the land and was in awe at the wide open space of Alberta. She decided to purchase property and build a lodge. Though it took several years to complete, it has always been a spot for families to gather. As more and more people hear about the lodge it's booked many times two years in advance. But there are always spots for last minute bookings as well.
Why Cheryl Davidsen chose Mountain View
Families love this facility. It is in a private beautiful spot. You feel all to yourselves yet you are not that far away from the main stream. It seems to be in a perfect location only 20 minutes from several main attractions including- Waterton, Cardston, Great Canadian Barn Dance and even the U.S. border where the Glacier Parks are located. For families and friends to rent a large enough facility in Waterton, cost would be high. Many times you do not find a place that can keep everyone under one roof with a large enough room to all gather in. Imagine playing, singing and laughing to your hearts content. Imagine writing up an itinerary of amazing fun activities for your family event and only minutes away; hiking, biking, dancing, attending live theater, horse trail riding, ATVing, boating, swimming, fishing, old fashioned horse carriage rides and much much more. Imagine putting on programs in the lodge with a sound system for your entertainers in the family. Imagine doing treasure hunts, games, paint balling, water sliding; the ideas are endless for you and your family to have a hoot! We've had families bring in their own ATV's, their own play grounds, their own games, their own horses, even a train of carts pulled by a sit down lawn mower. Mini water slides can be made to slide down the hill right by the lodge. The field is big enough and flat enough to even have a great game of softball. In the winter you can skate on the pond and sled down the road. It's fantastically fun. We have loved taking care of Payne Lake Lodge. The area is so beautiful and it is so satisfying to provide a place for families to gather. We clean it, we maintain it, we cherish it. It has become so dear to us because it brings families together! And.... they have a GREAT time!
What makes this Lodge unique
By far, the best thing about Payne Lake Lodge is it's surrounding beauty. To stand on the deck and look out over Payne Lake with the sun going down behind the Rockies, to travel down the road towards the lodge and see Old Chief Mountain staring you majestically in the face, to actually see the star filled sky at nights, to hear the frogs singing, the coyotes yipping and best of all to see your family enjoying the beauty, the sounds, and the joy of just plain being together. It's simply the best.

Payne Lake Lodge is great for large groups!
So many things were wonderful about our stay at Payne Lake Lodge. The layout of the house was perfect for our group of 29. There were enough beds and baths for everyone. Plenty of towels and extra blankets. The eating space had plenty of tables and chairs, the deck had enough picnic tables for everyone. There was plenty of room to play out in the yard. We really enjoyed the piano. Two stoves/ovens was a huge help, as were the three refrigerators. The views were beautiful!! We really were very happy with our stay here. The only comments I can make are that not all of the beds were comfortable, some felt like they needed updating. Also, the kitchen was not very clean. We found many dirty dishes in the cabinets, and we had to boil the kitchen washcloths because they stank. However, we loved our time at the Lodge and would love to return for another reunion!!
Great place for a family reunion.
The Lodge is a bit rustic. I am VERY particular and came to realize that the fact that the place wasn’t spotless made for a more relaxing holiday with 16 children. The kids had an amazingly good time. I would book this again.
Beautiful place and Cheryl was so accommodating! We really enjoyed our stay. Thanks!
We really love the place the only problem is lot broken in the washroom but everything is good
Thanks Jonathan. I was not sure what you meant by "lot broken in the washroom". I noticed after your group left that the toilet handle had been broken off by your group. We immediately replaced for the next group coming in. I could find nothing else in the bathroom that was broken.
A perfect getaway for family reunion
Payne Lake Lodge was a perfect family retreat location. Everyone was comfortable staying in the lodge, which was well equipped with everything. The field outside was perfect for kids to run and play. Definitely will recommend this lodge to other groups looking for a place to accommodate family reunions with 20+ people. And I also want to commend the property manager. One of the fridges wasn’t working when we checked in and Cheryl had it replaced within a few hours. Cheryl was super helpful and readily available. Perfect vacation!
Beautiful rural setting
Our extended family of 46 had a wonderful time here.
Payne Lake Lodge is located between two wonderful historic towns, Waterton National Park and Cardston and only twenty minutes from either town.
Waterton is a hiker's paradise with some of the world's most spectacular scenery. Enjoy boating, mountain biking, exploring nature and sight seeing. Elk, deer, mountain sheep, moose and bears are always a common attraction. There are trails for the novice hiker or advanced. There are magnificent mountains to climb and guides to take you if you wish. Peddle Bikes, Mountain Bikes, Surries and Scooter rentals are available at Pat's Garage and are a great way to see the Waterton scenery. Cross Country Skiing and Snow Shoeing are popular winter activities there.
Cardston has the historic Remington Carriage Center (voted Alberta's Best Attraction), Cobblestone Manor
(an amazing historical restaurant), LDS Temple and Visitors Center, Pioneer Card home as well as shopping conveniences, museums and restaurants. Cardston also is famous for it's wonderful live theater productions, a must see if you are in the area.
Payne Lake Lodge is nestled in a lovely treed area just 2 miles off the main highway. Quiet, private and surrounded with Mountains, lakes and hills. The town of Mountain View is only 3 miles away and has gas, convenience store items and camping amenities. Also nearby is Mountain Meadow Trail Rides, a wonderful horse riding adventure with amazing hosts Dan and Terry Nelson.
In the town of Hill Spring 10 miles north is the famous Great Canadian Barn Dance run by the talented Kunkle family. They offer a great country down home experience with dancing, entertainment and dinner.
Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump and the Famous Frank Slide on Turtle Mountain are only 45 miles from Mountain View.
This corner of Alberta is considered one of the best tourist attractions in Canada because there are just so many things to do within a short radius. A few other attractions are the historic Fort Mcleod and the Mounted Police musical ride, Writing On Stone Provincial Park filled with hoodoos and river beach fun. The city of Lethbridge 60 miles away offers great shopping and historical sites as well. Calgary is two hours North and has the famous Calgary Stampede.
