My wife and I both grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and after many years of working in the high tech industry started thinking about where we wanted to retire. After a long search we settled on Northwest Montana, and after buying some property we built our dream home overlooking Swan Lake about 10 miles outside of the village of Bigfork. We chose Montana because it had everything we wanted, boating, hiking, horses, camping, and was within an hour's drive of Glacier National Park, one of our favorite places to visit. We wanted a small town atmosphere where we could get to know everyone and Bigfork was just the right size for us. We love living here, even during the harsh winter months, and we have been able to do certain things, such as dog sledding, that we could never do in California. Even though we have only lived here for a few years, we can't imagine living anywhere else!
Steve Shapero purchased this condo in 2014
We started looking for a vacation rental property in 2013. Bigfork is a very popular resort area, and there were a number of rental properties for sale, but we wanted to buy in the best location, which meant as close to downtown as possible. We didn't want a large unit that would cost a lot to maintain and that we would have to charge a lot for. A 1 bedroom, 1 bath condo was the perfect size for us and would complement our original vacation rental which happens to be right next door. C
The best thing about this condo is that you can walk out the front door, cross the street, and be in downtown Bigfork. Just stroll down Electric Avenue and enjoy the shops, bars, restaurants and live theater available throughout the year. You can walk south on Electric Avenue, across the steel bridge, and spend some time either listening to a band in Sliter Park or letting your kids enjoy the playground area. Head north on Electric Avenue, turn right on Grand Avenue and walk up the hill to the trail head for the 2 mile Swan River Nature Trail. It's a leisurely hike that takes you along the beautiful Swan River. After you're done hiking you can head back into town and have an adult beverage at one of the two local bars, or grab something to eat at one of the many local eateries. You can wander through the shops and art galleries looking the the perfect gift for that special someone. Being located so close to downtown means you can walk to anywhere you want without having to get in your car.
The condo itself was everything you could ask for - spacious, with a beautiful loft bedroom and a large deck overlooking the beautiful Swan River. The condo is only a block off downtown Bigfork, which is a great place to stroll, shop, eat and take in art galleries. The bonus of our one-week stay was learning about a two-mile trail along the Swan River that begins about three blocks from the condo. We used the trail almost every morning for a jog and/or walk, and it was truly scenic, sitting high above the Swan River and overlooking, in the distance, Flathead Lake. Doesn't get any better than that. Bottom line is you will find everything you want during a stay at this condo. Only danger is the condo is so nice it's sometimes hard to leave to participate in the abundant recreational opportunities nearby.
My mother and I stayed at Steve's condo for a few days in September while we were sightseeing in the area. We found the condo to be a great home base while exploring. The view out the back of the unit overlooking the river is amazing; waking up to it is something a person could get use to! I appreciated that the condo was stocked for cooking, there was cable & wifi & my little dog was made welcome. The proximity to dining and shopping was also a plus, it was great to be able to walk to conveniences. We also liked the easy proximity to Glacier NP & shopping in Kalispell.
The bedroom loft with a view of the river and the sky was amazing. Central location to downtown and all its amenities is a plus. The condo is the perfect way to unwind but still have all the comforts of your own home.Clean and well kept will keep me coming back.
Really good location. Close to everything.
Comfortable, spacious, quiet, modern condo. Loved the big picture windows and the private balcony overlooking the river. Super-easy walking distance to shops, restaurants, and the Bigfork Summer Playhouse.
Great option. Centrally located (walking distance to everything). Modern and clean. Well equipped. Beautiful view. Only one caution...upon entering the foyer, there are two doors. Enter the condo via the one on the right! We were surprised to open the one on the left and find some sleeping guests in another suite.
The Village of Bigfork has many avenues for adventure throughout the year.
During the summer months there are the rivers and lakes in the area, including Flathead Lake (the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River), Swan Lake and Echo Lake. Boating, Sailing, fishing, kayaking, swimming, and tubing are very popular activities for both visitors and locals. Surrounding Flathead Lake are many cherry orchards which means fresh sweet cherries during the summer.
Bigfork Village has many quaint shops for purchasing one-of-a-kind souvenirs and gifts. There is a fudge shop as well as coffee shops and full menu restaurants.
In the evening there are concerts in Sliter Park, and the Bigfork Summer Playhouse provides musicals and dramas throughout the summer months.
During the day there is plenty to do away from the water. There are hiking trails throughout the area and horses can be rented from one of the local dude ranches. There are also some challenging peaks in the area for anyone interested in mountain climbing.
