History of the J.B. McHose Home:

J.B. McHose was the owner of a brick and tile manufacturing company in Boone. McHose was a progressive leader who led many projects to improve the community. An admirer of Teddy Roosevelt, McHose’ main interest was the development of parks for the enjoyment of the public. McHose and his wife donated the land and funds to the city with the intent to build a city park. McHose Park is the product of their generosity and is used year-round by hundreds of people. There is also a statue of Theodore Roosevelt in the park. Be sure to find it!

J.B. McHose built his home in 1910 with bricks from his brick and tile factory. The home is a duplex, but at the time was called a ”double-house”. With two four-bedroom homes (a West Unit and East Unit) that are 'book-matched' together in the center the home affords a great deal of living space. McHose and his wife lived in the East Unit while his mother lived in the West Unit. This listing is for the East Unit.

The exterior of the J.B. McHose House features hand-chiseled brick to give the appearance of rough stone, deep red mortar joints, horizontal bands of sandstone on the front and sides, low hip roofs with deep eaves, and “blind” entrances to each unit. These features were hallmarks of the Prairie School Style of Architecture that was appearing in the Midwest shortly after the turn of the century.

The J.B. McHose House East Unit offers approximately 2,200 square feet of living space. The first floor has an entry with a foyer, a hall with a beautiful open staircase, a large living room, large dining room and cozy office space with a half bath. The house also features a galley kitchen complete with dishes and cookware. All you need to do is bring the food! The second floor features four bedrooms and a bathroom with walk-in shower. On a hot summer day you can enjoy a cold glass of lemonade on the wonderful front porch.

Please be our guest at the J.B. McHose House East Unit!

Perfect for our Christmas Family Gathering.

  • 5 of 5

Very much enjoyed our stay at the JB McHose East unit. Charming and beautifully restored, we had everything we needed for our stay, and was even decorated for Christmas tree and all. The kitchen was well stocked with dishes pots and pans utensils spices etc., and condiments in the fridge. Weather was cold, but nice and toasty inside. Living room kitchen and dining room were large enough for our group of six, and about a dozen friends over for a party one night. Rooms were great, beds comfortable. I would definitely want to reserve again, perhaps this summer. Thanks Donovan for a great stay, and even scheduling some snow for us to play in.

Very nice, it is was a perfect space for our Thanksgiving family gatherings near Ames. Extremely clean, spacious, and quiet. Comfortable. Big rooms. We all loved the history of the building, as well as the obvious great care that was put into the rehab of this house.

Beautiful historic home!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed Thanksgiving at this beautiful property. The home is cozy and comfortable, perfect to celebrate away from home. The beds were very comfortable. The owner was great to work with and we enjoyed learning the history behind the home. We visited the Kate Shelley high bridge and McHose park by the owners recommendation. Both were very neat!

Beautiful Home

  • 5 of 5

We had the most incredible time staying in the historic J.B. McHose House. It is absolutely beautiful and Donovan is a wonderful host. It was the perfect home base for us to visit with cherished relatives in the Boone and Ogden area. We hope to come back to spend more time here in the near future. Thank you Donovan, you truly have a gem here.

A blast from the past!

  • 5 of 5

We were in town for family weekend at ISU. Two families decided to rent the East Unit and we were so glad we did. The house is over 100 years old but was lovingly restored by the owner. It is warm and inviting and we spent as much time there as we could. There is a lot of woodwork and so there is come creaking of floor boards. Taller people have to watch their heads coming down the stairs! But the kitchen was so completely equipped we lacked for nothing. The dining room was a great place to have breakfast and in the evenings we played games until the wee hours. The beds were comfortable and all of the rooms were very clean. The Dutch bakery is only about a block away - awesome pastries and cinnamon bread. We would stay here again in a heart beat - so much better than two rooms in a hotel.
