McHose). Seven Oaks is also just a short drive where you can ski and snowboard in winter and rent canoes for a scenic ride down the Des Moines River in summer and fall.

History of the J.B. McHose Home:

J.B. McHose was the owner of a brick and tile manufacturing company in Boone. McHose was a progressive leader who led many projects to improve the community. An admirer of Teddy Roosevelt, McHose’ main interest was the development of parks for the enjoyment of the public. McHose and his wife donated the land and funds to the city with the intent to build a city park. McHose Park is the product of their generosity and is used year-round by hundreds of people. There is also a statue of Theodore Roosevelt in the park. Be sure to find it!

J.B. McHose built his home in 1910 with bricks from his brick and tile factory. The home is a duplex, but at the time was called a ”double-house”. With two four-bedroom homes (a West Unit and East Unit) that are 'book-matched' together in the center the home affords a great deal of living space. McHose and his wife lived in the East Unit while his mother lived in the West Unit. This listing is for the East Unit.

The exterior of the J.B. McHose House features hand-chiseled brick to give the appearance of rough stone, deep red mortar joints, horizontal bands of sandstone on the front and sides, low hip roofs with deep eaves, and “blind” entrances to each unit. These features were hallmarks of the Prairie School Style of Architecture that was appearing in the Midwest shortly after the turn of the century.

The J.B. McHose House East Unit offers approximately 2,200 square feet of living space. The first floor has an entry with a foyer, a hall with a beautiful open staircase, a large living room, large dining room and cozy office space with a half bath. The house also features a galley kitchen complete with dishes and cookware. All you need to do is bring the food! The second floor features four bedrooms and a bathroom with walk-in shower. On a hot summer day you can enjoy a cold glass of lemonade on the wonderful front porch.

Please be our guest at the J.B. McHose House East Unit!

Very impressed, great for my young family! We can't wait to stay again

  • 5 of 5

What a beautiful little home in downtown Boone. We loved how close everything was and to also be close to the old downtown area made our vacation more delightful. We have a lot of young children and were worried to stay in an older home, but it was equipped for young children from the extra crib stored in the closet to an extra booster seat as well. We felt very much at home away from home. We have family in Ames and look forward to staying here again the next time we come out. Thank you!

Quaint, Quiet and Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

We came down from the Twin Cities for a big age-group swim meet in Ames for the weekend. Hotel room prices skyrocketed due to the high demand (kids coming to swim from the surrounding states). We were lucky to find the J.B. MCHose house! The attention to detail was appreciated, including condiments in the fridge, ample kitchen supplies, plates, utensils, papertowels, dishsoap...etc. There was even new soap, shampoo and conditioner waiting for us in the bathroom. Towels and sheets were provided, beds were made. The house was within walking distance of restaurants and Walgreens for last minute supplies. The town of Boone was quaint, peaceful and quiet. We are definitely planning on making a stay at the J.B McHose a yearly tradition!

Beautiful and spacious restored home

  • 5 of 5

Donovan's rental was the perfect place for our large group celebrating a graduation at ISU. So nice to all be under one roof as opposed to multiple hotel rooms maybe not even together. About a 20 minute drive to Ames. Always nice to have the kitchen to prepare some of our meals. It was fairly well appointed, maybe some larger pans/skillet but we made due. Internet access was out but I think that was a temporary problem. Place was very clean and beds were comfortable. Thank you Donovan!!

Our extended family stayed here while visiting our son who is a student at ISU. The location is very convenient (about a 15 min. drive to Campus). The house is beautiful and very clean.
