Beware: Get insurance if you stay here!

  • 1 of 5

Our family used the beautiful Dearing Mansion for our daughter's wedding weekend. It was a perfect setting that fit our needs as we hosted a dinner one evening. All beds slept comfortably so we left thinking it had been a good experience. A week later, after returning home we were informed, through the newlyweds, not directly to us that there we left damages. In the end our insurance covered 1/2 the damages, but the Dearing Mansion withheld the remaining deposit to recover 3 additional cushion chairs be recovered. Beware and get insurance should anything go a miss, they will find a way for you to pay!

The Dearing Mansion advertised for one price but, our actual costs with cleaning fees, taxes, VRBO fees, deposit, insurance and fee for dinner party cost us dearly. Only stay if you get insurance and take pictures of any damages seen before hand to insure your deposit can be returned. They do NOT have a before and after check out system to discuss this things while both are on site. One tiny dent in walnut floor cost , who knows how it got there, or when, but we paid for it's repair cost. The owner also asked us to allow him in the Mansion for a home tour during our 3 day stay. We allowed this, so if you are willing to have visitors while renting you have been warned. Be sure to get insurance!

This is NOT $800 per night, many hidden costs!

  • 3 of 5

Our experience at the Dearing Mansion was lovely as for it's atmosphere was a spacious and elegant place for a wedding weekend and rehearsal dinner, yet in the end we paid a great deal for what we got! $800 is the cost per night, plus taxes and a $1000 deposit. Expect to pay much more as this rental also charges cleaning fee of $250, as well as VRBO fees, (both are tax deductions for a business, which they should not be able to claim as it came in a income.) If you use the mansion for entertaining guests you will also be charged a extra fee. We STRONGLY RECOMMEND taking out the VRBO Renter's Insurance in case anything is a miss after your guests leave because all of the owner's personal possessions are in the house. Our $99 insurance policy paid off as we were told of damages(door jam $95, small hole in floor, maybe from a high heel, $225, and replace cushions/ leather covers on 4 chairs when one had a stain,$620.) we were told of these a week after our stay. There is not a walk through check off before and after to make of sure there was no pre-existing damages. Also we were asked by owner to allow him access to the mansion during our stay to show to someone from out of state the house. We allowed this, then were hit a week after returning home with "damages", which thankfully our insurance covered. If your pocket book can handle all the extra cost go for it, but it is NOT $800 per night expect to pay at least $1200+ per night or more if you are entertaining at the mansion. Insurance is a MUST!

The Dearing Mansion is a special place.

  • 5 of 5

The condition of the property and attention to detail made it a wonderful setting for a family reunion. Everything we needed was there. The effort that has been put into maintenance, restoration, and updating is evident everywhere. Our group of eight was very comfortable. The location is very convenient for access to both cities.

I did not appreciate the $250 early checkin charge. My family had been travelling since the early morning and we needed to be able to get in and get some rest before a long day of activities. Since there is no cost associated with an early checkin I don't think it is justified.

wonderful stay in this historic mansion

  • 5 of 5

We spent 4 nights in the historic Dearing Mansion in late Sept 2016. Scott is a generous host and was there to meet us when we arrived. He showed us around the house and explained a few things, such as the gas range/oven, washer/dryer, tv, music set-up and the sauna. The house has everything we wanted. Lots of room for our group of 7 and a nice outside grill. The bathrooms are updated and tastefully done. We loved all the old features of the house that have been so carefully restored. We found it easy to drive to other places in the Minneapolis/ St Paul area. We had a fantastic stay here and it was fun memories for our group!
