About Martha Rutherford Conrad
I enjoy spending time in the outdoors including hiking, biking and horseback riding. Following an Honours degree in History from Queen's University and a Masters in Information Science from the University of Western Ontario, I have enjoyed a career in museum management. Personally, my husband and I have owned historical properties that we have strived to restore back to their original character. We love to travel, explore new places and meet new people. Fulfilling one of our goals, over the years we have taken our four children on camping trips across Canada travelling as far north, west, south and east as possible within Canada in a truck with an old canvas tent. We loved our journeys together as a family and we look forward to meeting you and hearing about your journeys.
Martha Rutherford Conrad purchased this Chateau / Country House in 2013
Why Martha Rutherford Conrad chose Sherwood Park
Maggie's Hill Heritage Loghouse is a special property that immediately appealed to my husband and I. It is the oldest property in Strathcona County and was settled by one of the first Metis settlers in this area. When his daughter (Maggie) married a Scottish railway man, he gifted the loghouse to them as a wedding gift. Together Maggie and John raised 9 children in a 600 sq. foot loghouse. Sitting on a hill overlooking Hastings Lake, the property soon became known as Maggie's Hill. It is a privilege for my husband and I to become the lastest stewards of this treasured historic site.
What makes this Chateau / Country House unique
The property is resplendent with details that depict the early pioneer heritage in Strathcona County from fencing styles, shingles, and architectural details. The property also boasts a 70 acre Ducks Unlimited Conservation Area with an opportunity to view a wide variety of birds and waterfowl including teal ducks, wood ducks, pelican, goshawks and great horned owls.

Gorgeous, peaceful spot for a writers' retreat
Spent a week here writing with a small group of friends. The space couldn't have been more perfect for both mental and physical wandering. Several of us started each day with a run or ramble around the trails on the property, the dog bounding along beside us. Then, we'd fan out into different rooms/porches to work. (The cottage is large enough that it was as if we each had our own secluded office.) Finally, in the evenings, we'd come back together to cook dinner, fire up the BBQ and roast marshmallows--and finally off to sleep in our respective nooks. Maggie's Hill is truly magical.
Perfect cabin in the woods away from it all. Martha's a great help and always at hand for help. Children call it Fairyland.
We had everything we needed in the cabin.
Too much fun there and did not want to leave.

The perfect retreat!!! Beautiful and Serene!
Martha was an amazing host, thank you for sharing this historical property with us! My 10 year old son loved biking around the property! The sound of the birds singing all day was beautiful also! We hope to be back very soon as it seems like a world away yet is only 40 min from my front door! Hope to see you very soon! Thanks again for everything!
Awesome, cozy and quiet! A great getaway.
We had a great time in this cozy log cabin. The view of birds, and moose just outside the door was amazing. We liked all the comfort Martha provided for our stay.
This place is a gem - the walking trails were amazing and never got old - the area is so well kept but keeps the natural feel. The house is awesome and sitting on the screened in porch watching the birds and creatures was so relaxing. The area has lots of lots that are a short drive as well as the one that you can take a couple of minutes to walk to. It was truly the most relaxing holiday I have had in a very long time. The area is so quiet except for the sounds of nature and beauty in every direction.
This rolling landscape in eastern Strathcona County is called the Land of Lakes for good reason. Populated with many lakes, we are situated on one of the most eastern of them called Hastings Lake. Renowned as a bird sanctuary, Hastings Lake is a treasure trove for bird watchers. Maggie's Hill is home to many species of birds including teal ducks, wood ducks, pelicans, bald eagles, ruffed grouse, goshawk and great horned owls. Wildlife is plentiful on the ranch with the opportunity to view moose, deer, coyote, muskrats, beavers, bobcat and even the rare wolf.
Maggie's Hill Heritage Loghouse is close to premier attractions including Elk Island National Park, Ukranian Heritage Village and Blackfoot Cooking Lake Conservation Area. Sherwood Park provides many amenities including shopping, theatre, public library, recreational facilities, restaurants and a farmers market. Within 45 minutes you are on Whyte Avenue in Edmonton with its theatres, festivals, boutique shops and diverse culinary experiences.
