This is our Winter Retirement Condo. We fell in love with Hilo Town when we brought our daughter to college here in 2000. We knew we wanted to purchase a property where we could get up each morning and swim in the ocean. There's no better place for that than Carlsmith (Four Mile) Beach which is a 5 minute walk from our condo. We love to be outside so the opportunities to swim, snorkel, hike to the waterfalls and in the rain forests is what we love most about living here. We live in Colorado Springs, Colorado during the summer and fall each year where we enjoy our kids and grand kids.
Carol Ruettinger purchased this condo in 2004

We were very pleased with this delightful condo. More like a home than a fancy, commercial establishment, it had all we needed for a month of good living. It was sparkling clean and nicely furnished, with a kitchen well supplied for cooking. The lanai overlooks a lush array of tropical green and comes complete with a nightly seranade of coqui frogs. (Earplugs are thoughtfully provided for non-appreciaters.) This condo was not advertised as being wheelchair accessible but for disabled people with some mobility it is workable. The owner graciously provided a shower chair and the bathroom, while a bit tight, was sufficient to meet my husband's needs. Hilo in the summer can be muggy. The condo's fans and dehumidifier could have been supplemented by AC to add a measure of comfort, but cooling breezes on the lanai usually offered all we needed. All told, we were most satisfied and would return again.
It's clean, beautifully decorated and supplied with everything a person would need. And the location is perfect, right by the best beaches on the Eastside. While swimming, we aren't supposed to touch the turtles but evidently noone told the biggest turtle at Carl Smith beach that. No matter how I tried to move away, he would try to nuzzle up to me. Amazing creature.
The condo complex is clean and quiet. We enjoyed the coqui frogs at night and quickly got used to the airplanes flying over. Saw many rainbows from the deck. Perfect spot.
Hale Moana is the perfect spot to land. Close to everything, gracious owners and stunning accommodation. I would highly recommend this VRBO property to anyone coming to Hilo
The pictures on the website pretty much say it all - tastefully updated decor, beautiful sights, spectacular ocean parks and tidal pools within walking distance. I never got up early enough to see the turtles at Carlsmith beach but I heard they were there. Because electricity is so expensive there, there are few, if any, reasonably priced accommodations with air conditioning and this condo was no exception. However, there is a huge wall of sliding glass doors that open to allow the breeze in plus a ceiling fan and portable fan as well. Coming from a dry climate, the humidity was a little tough getting used to but we managed and had a fabulous time! The condo is in a convenient location to town and to a ton of beach parks and other attractions. And last but not least, Carol was very gracious throughout the entire rental process and I would love to stay here again if given the opportunity!
We had a wonderful stay. The condo was squeaky clean and is beautifully appointed. It had supplies and comfort level above the normal. The hosts were gracious and helpful in every way. Walking distance to a great beach and close to many other beaches and parks. The lanai looks onto a rain forest area of trees with bird life. It was quiet and peaceful and we would go back there in a heartbeat.
The condo was wonderful for my wife and two teenage children, very clean and roomy, loved the sliding partition in the living room so the kids could have their own "rooms". Close to beaches with lots of sea turtles swimming by. A 5 minute drive to the airport and close to downtown Hilo. The Volcano National Park was a highlight for us all. Hilo seems to be a very laid back city and we enjoyed just relaxing by the pool or at the beach.
Our condo is right in the middle of the BEACH PARKS along Kalanianaole Ave. including Onekahakaha Beach Park, Carl Smith Beach Park (Four Mile), Richardson's Ocean Park, Leleiwi Beach Park, and Kealoha Beach Park. Richardson's is the best for snorkeling, but our favorite is Carl Smith Beach Park (5 minute walk from the condo). It has a calm area with many large green sea turtles and steps down into the water. During November-April we often see whales and spinner dolphins. And, occasionally a monk seal or two. VOLCANO NATIONAL PARK is an easy 45 minute drive and along the way you will be able to visit ATKUSURA ORCHIDS (free admission), the HILO RAIN FOREST ZOO (free admission), and MOANA LOA NUT FARM. If you are interested in MUSEUMS, there are two of particular interest right downtown HILO~the PACIFIC TSUNAMI MUSEUM and the LYMAN MUSEUM~both highly recommended. Don't miss the HILO FARMERS MARKET on Wednesdays and Saturdays~right downtown on Kamehameha. TROPICAL BOTANICAL GARDENS with a waterfall and ocean overlook, AKAKA FALLS, RAINBOW FALLS AND BOILING POTS, UNAMA FALLS, PADDLE BOARDING, KAYAKING, SCUBA DIVING, SNORKELING there is so much to see and do and our condo makes a great home base.
