Overview

Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island House Rental Photos and Description

3 Bedrooms, 2.5 Bathrooms, Sleeps 6

Nepenthe Den is a newly renovated and spacious Farmhouse with partial water and mountain views conveniently located in the Heart of Southwest Harbor. I have thoughtfully tried to provide all the amenities you would have in your own home and want you to feel as comfortable as possible while enjoying your time here.

Nepenthe has a fully stocked kitchen with all new stainless steel appliances including a refrigerator, 5 top burner gas range with a convection oven, dishwasher, microwave, coffee maker, espresso machine, Flavia single cup coffee machine, toaster oven, blender and crock-pot. Seating for 4 at the bar in the kitchen allows you to enjoy your company while cooking or just enjoying a casual meal or glass of wine.

Conveniently located on the first floor off the kitchen is a small half bath and also a washer/ dryer station.

The dinning room has a beautiful floor to ceiling brick fireplace, hardwood hickory floors, and a french door providing access to the very expansive back deck. The dinning room table seats 6 but another table can easily be added to accommodate 4 additional guests or if you prefer separate seating for the kids!

The spacious living room is heartwarming with another floor to ceiling pink granite fireplace, hardwood floors and french doors looking out to Norwood Cove and also providing access to the back deck. It is stocked with games, puzzles and a flat screen TV with DVD player. The perfect place to relax after a long day of exploring.

The guest bedrooms are provided with extra pillows and blankets but also fans for those hot summer nights we occasionally have!

The master bedroom is complete with a king size bed, ceiling fan, flat screen TV and a balcony overlooking the mountains, Norwood Cove and yes, every morning, a magnificent sunrise. The master bath has a 4’ corner shower and also an extra deep claw foot bathtub and a 3' granite vanity with plenty of storage.

Outside there is a back deck for relaxing, dining and entertaining and a front porch to observe our small town life as we know it.

Garage Storage is available upon request for outdoor equipment if needed and any other additional needs or requests can be addressed with the owner & property manager.

About Mariah Pronovost

In 1994 I moved to Mount Desert Island to work for the summer and like many others never left. I love to travel and spend as much time as possible enjoying what's in my own back yard here hiking, biking, kayaking and my new passion sailing. Nothing makes me happier than living in the town I consider my "hometown" and now sharing my love and enthusiasm for these things with my daughter and being able to raise her in such a magical place. I love sharing my home with guests that are here to experience the life I get to live every day and hope they feel the same.

Mariah Pronovost purchased this house in 2014

Why Mariah Pronovost chose Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island

As the description says Nepenthe Den is the "Heart of Southwest Harbor". The convenience of being in town and walking distance to everything and at the same time only minutes from Acadia National Park. Although Nepenthe Den is in town it is still mostly surrounded by trees and a lovely setting to sit back and enjoy nature. If you take a minute to observe you can watch a variety of native birds, deer, and butterflies meander the property. As a beginner Gardner I am always working on landscaping areas to create special places these animals can enjoy as well.

What makes this house unique

Many ask what does Nepenthe mean. Nepenthe is derived from a Greek word used to describe a state of mind where you can forget all pain and sorrow. Personally for myself the purchase of 241 Main Street was just that and thus 241 became Nepenthe Den. This is a place to relax, settle in and take the time to pay attention to the areas of life that need a little TLC. Whether it be spending more time with family, taking time out for yourself or just indulging in the abundant beauty of Mount Desert Island. Providing a peaceful place for visitors and guests as well as myself is what makes this property I believe to be truly unique.

Wonderful House in Southwest Harbor

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent nearly 5 weeks living in Nepenthe Den in Southwest Harbor. Our chief regret is that we couldn't stay longer. Mariah, the owner was very welcoming and helpful even picking up packages for safekeeping that we ordered online and had delivered to the house. The house is beautiful. We especially appreciated the chef's kitchen, the incredibly comfortable master bed, two outdoor decks and the strong signal and bandwidth of the internet connection. Being right on Main St has pluses and minuses. Restaurants, liquor stores and grocery stores are a short walk which is a plus. Trafffic noise can be loud but we adjusted to the morning "rush hour" after a couple of days and it became background noise. There are several wonderful hikes nearby at Long Pond, Echo Lake and Acadia Mtn away from the traffic and congestion of Bar Harbor. We enjoyed lobster at Beals Lobster Pound within walking distance of the house. The location is within a 20 to 30 minute drive of the key attractions in Acadia National Park but my wife and I looked forward to returning home to Nepenthe Den after a day in the park. It truly was a home away from home!

Clean and comfortable home

  • 4 of 5

This is a well cared for, clean, spacious and comfortable home right in Southwest Harbor. The owner takes good care of it and is right there if you need her for anything. She brought us firewood since we did not arrive with our own and checked in to make sure we had everything we needed.

In summer, the back deck must be really exceptional though we did not take advantage in the dead of winter.

The proximity to the owner (attached unit) can be seen in different ways. It can be helpful, as above, but it was surprising to us and, for me, took away a little of the sense of being in the secluded wilderness that I seek when I go to Acadia/Mount Desert Island.

The location provides really easy access to Southwest Harbor; we walked into town. It is also well situated to some great hikes. But also right on the road, so I kept our front blinds down when we were home.

All in all, a really nice property with all the things you could need and an attentive owner who is easy to communicate with.

Cozy holiday retreat

  • 5 of 5

My mother and I stayed here for 3 nights over Christmas to be near my sister's family, who lives in the area. Nepenthe Den is a lovely home and was a wonderful alternative to a hotel - it was more spacious, comfortable, and more convenient than any hotels open this time of year. The large and modern kitchen was wonderful for making Christmas dinner, and the living areas were cozy places to enjoy one another's company. I would definitely stay here again when visiting the area.

Great location and peaceful retreat

  • 4 of 5

My friends and I rented Nepenthe Den for the MDI marathon (my first marathon!), and it was a perfect location for both the trip and race day itself. We cooked a lot and made use of the beautiful fireplace, playing games and reading - as you do in Maine. It is far enough away from the hustle and bustle of Bar Harbor, but not too far of a drive to go out to eat or visit the eastern side of Acadia National Park.

The property was very clean, and had most of the things we needed for our stay. I personally loved the claw-foot tub, both for a nice hot soak and my attempt at an ice bath post-race. We were a short walk to Southwest Harbor, although with the rain we weren't able to explore as much as we'd hope.

I would definitely recommend this place!

Fall trip to Acadia Park

  • 5 of 5

We spent a wonderful week here on rhe "quiet side" of Acadia. The house was immaculate and so well appointed. The kitchen is well stocked and easy to prepare a meal in the spacious area. We certainly enjoyed the fireplace at night and Moriah had starter logs handy. We did not get to enjoy the back deck due to the rain and chilly weather. Moriah was very friendly and willing to help us with any question or request. We would definitely recommend this wonderful home for a great trip to Acadia.

Perfect place to stay in Acadia!

  • 5 of 5

Nepenthe Den was exactly as described only better in many respects. The place was absolutely immaculate and the accommodations extremely comfortable throughout. The kitchen in particular was great with everything available to prepare meals including many condiments and seasonings which was very convenient. Mariah is awesome! We wish her all the best!

With Acadia National Park being the main attraction to the area there is an abundance of activities to keep one occupied almost endlessly. The miles of trails for hiking, carriage roads for biking, scenic drives and miles of shoreline to kayak or sail just can't be done in a week or even an entire summer. However if during your stay you do start to feel you've had your fill of the great outdoors, or are maybe just too sore to put one foot in front of the other, there are many other activities to choose from. World famous gardens such as the Azalea, Asticou and the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, which is a private garden but can be viewed when scheduled ahead of time, are all worth seeing. There is even a small but very quaint garden, The Charlotte Rhoades Park and Butterfly Garden, just a minutes walk from Nepenthe. Museums, art galleries, fine dining, fun boutiques with work from local artists, wildlife excursions and of course some incredibly fabulous spas to choose from! What would a vacation be without treating yourself to an amazing massage or facial! For the sea fairing lover kayaking to one of the outer islands and enjoying your own private picnic or savoring a sunset sail with one of the local companies in town is a must. If a quiet night is NOT what you had in mind many of the restaurants and bars provide live music and dancing as well.

Venturing off Island, Mount Desert Island that is, to explore some equally beautiful areas such as Baxter State Park which can be done in a day trip or a very long day trip if you plan on hiking the highest peak in Maine Mt. Katahdin! The Eastern most point in the United States, Lubec, and crossing over into New Brunswick and visiting Campobello Island is also only a day trip away.

Although there is never a shortage of sights and activities spring through fall most people don't know the area can be enjoyed year round. Cross country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing and even snowmobiling is allowed on most of the paved park roads. Checking with park headquarters is advised ahead of time but with proper planning a sunset trip up Cadillac via snowmobile, or snowshoeing if you’re into that, can be pretty amazing. Whatever your agenda may be or the time of year you are able to visit this is definitely a place putting at the top of your list and making it happen.
