About the property

3 Bedrooms, 2.5 Bathrooms, Sleeps 6

Nepenthe Den is a newly renovated and spacious Farmhouse with partial water and mountain views conveniently located in the Heart of Southwest Harbor. I have thoughtfully tried to provide all the amenities you would have in your own home and want you to feel as comfortable as possible while enjoying your time here.

Nepenthe has a fully stocked kitchen with all new stainless steel appliances including a refrigerator, 5 top burner gas range with a convection oven, dishwasher, microwave, coffee maker, espresso machine, Flavia single cup coffee machine, toaster oven, blender and crock-pot. Seating for 4 at the bar in the kitchen allows you to enjoy your company while cooking or just enjoying a casual meal or glass of wine.

Conveniently located on the first floor off the kitchen is a small half bath and also a washer/ dryer station.

The dinning room has a beautiful floor to ceiling brick fireplace, hardwood hickory floors, and a french door providing access to the very expansive back deck. The dinning room table seats 6 but another table can easily be added to accommodate 4 additional guests or if you prefer separate seating for the kids!

The spacious living room is heartwarming with another floor to ceiling pink granite fireplace, hardwood floors and french doors looking out to Norwood Cove and also providing access to the back deck. It is stocked with games, puzzles and a flat screen TV with DVD player. The perfect place to relax after a long day of exploring.

The guest bedrooms are provided with extra pillows and blankets but also fans for those hot summer nights we occasionally have!

The master bedroom is complete with a king size bed, ceiling fan, flat screen TV and a balcony overlooking the mountains, Norwood Cove and yes, every morning, a magnificent sunrise. The master bath has a corner shower and also an extra deep claw foot bathtub and a 3' granite vanity with plenty of storage.

Outside there is a back deck for relaxing, dining and entertaining and a front porch to observe our small town life as we know it.

About Mariah Pronovost

In 1994 I moved to Mount Desert Island to work for the summer and like many others never left. I love to travel and spend as much time as possible enjoying what's in my own back yard here hiking, biking, kayaking and my new passion sailing. Nothing makes me happier than living in the town I consider my "hometown" and now sharing my love and enthusiasm for these things with my daughter and being able to raise her in such a magical place. I love sharing my home with guests that are here to experience the life I get to live every day and hope they feel the same.

Mariah Pronovost purchased this house in 2014

Why Mariah Pronovost chose Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island

As the description says Nepenthe Den is the "Heart of Southwest Harbor". The convenience of being in town and walking distance to everything and at the same time only minutes from Acadia National Park. Although Nepenthe Den is in town it is still mostly surrounded by trees and a lovely setting to sit back and enjoy nature. If you take a minute to observe you can watch a variety of native birds, deer, and butterflies meander the property. As a beginner Gardner I am always working on landscaping areas to create special places these animals can enjoy as well.

What makes this house unique

Many ask what does Nepenthe mean. Nepenthe is derived from a Greek word used to describe a state of mind where you can forget all pain and sorrow. Personally for myself the purchase of 241 Main Street was just that and thus 241 became Nepenthe Den. This is a place to relax, settle in and take the time to pay attention to the areas of life that need a little TLC. Whether it be spending more time with family, taking time out for yourself or just indulging in the abundant beauty of Mount Desert Island. Providing a peaceful place for visitors and guests as well as myself is what makes this property I believe to be truly unique.

Fabulous week at Nepenthe Den

  • 5 of 5

We loved the house - we had plenty of space and everything we needed. Mariah is an excellent host. We biked to the causeway and walked into town. Echo Lake is also a quick drive or bus ride. We were so lucky with excellent weather and spent a lot of time hiking, biking carriage trails, and swimming.

Beautiful and well maintained.

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week at Nepenthe Den with our 10 year old twins. The house is very comfortable and family friendly within walking distance of the cute town of Southwest Harbour. We found ourselves visiting the Little Notch Bakery or Common Good for popovers most mornings. Although the property is on the "quiet-side" we found it very easy to access Acadia national park and Bar Harbour from our home base. A key benefit of this location was not needing to navigate any crowds unless we chose to enter Bar Harbour. Some drawbacks were lack of any water view, no AC, and the house being on a main road with regular traffic. Despite these issues we had a wonderful stay and would highly recommend this property.

Beautiful home base for touring Acadia and Bar Harbor

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay here and will definitely be coming back in the future. The house is beautiful, has a nice layout, and has a perfect location. Being a bit of a neat freak, I was impressed with how clean the house was. We were very comfortable for a five day stay! Some other reviews expressed concern about the owner living on the property. This shouldn't even factor into your decision. Mariah greeted us on our first day there, introduced herself, asked if we needed any books or games for our kids, warned us of the bird nest outside the front door...and then we never saw her again. She was very hospitable and made us feel welcome. I have nothing negative to say about the property or our stay. We LOVED it! It's within about a ten minute drive to Bass Harbor Headlight, the wonderland trail, and ship Harbor trail. We recommend doing all three! Even in the rainy and foggy weather, the area is gorgeous! We hope to return sometime in the autumn and will definitely stay with Mariah again. Nepenthe Den is like a perfect home away from home!

The house is so beautiful and thoughtfully decorated. The owner has everything in the house you would need! It's about 20-30 minutes away from Acadia just depending on what part you want to visit.

Acadia National Park

  • 5 of 5

This home met all our expectations for our trip to Acadia National Park. We always like to stay away from the crowds in the park area. This was perfect. We had the small town atmosphere and still only a short drive to visit the highlights of the park. The house was very clean, well supplied and was perfect for two couples. I highly recommend you check this out before you stay in Bar Harbor.

With Acadia National Park being the main attraction to the area there is an abundance of activities to keep one occupied almost endlessly. The miles of trails for hiking, carriage roads for biking, scenic drives and miles of shoreline to kayak or sail just can't be done in a week or even an entire summer. However if during your stay you do start to feel you've had your fill of the great outdoors, or are maybe just too sore to put one foot in front of the other, there are many other activities to choose from. World famous gardens such as the Azalea, Asticou and the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, which is a private garden but can be viewed when scheduled ahead of time, are all worth seeing. There is even a small but very quaint garden, The Charlotte Rhoades Park and Butterfly Garden, just a minutes walk from Nepenthe. Museums, art galleries, fine dining, fun boutiques with work from local artists, wildlife excursions and of course some incredibly fabulous spas to choose from! What would a vacation be without treating yourself to an amazing massage or facial! For the sea fairing lover kayaking to one of the outer islands and enjoying your own private picnic or savoring a sunset sail with one of the local companies in town is a must. If a quiet night is NOT what you had in mind many of the restaurants and bars provide live music and dancing as well.

Venturing off Island, Mount Desert Island that is, to explore some equally beautiful areas such as Baxter State Park which can be done in a day trip or a very long day trip if you plan on hiking the highest peak in Maine Mt. Katahdin! The Eastern most point in the United States, Lubec, and crossing over into New Brunswick and visiting Campobello Island is also only a day trip away.

Although there is never a shortage of sights and activities spring through fall most people don't know the area can be enjoyed year round. Cross country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing and even snowmobiling is allowed on most of the paved park roads. Checking with park headquarters is advised ahead of time but with proper planning a sunset trip up Cadillac via snowmobile, or snowshoeing if you’re into that, can be pretty amazing. Whatever your agenda may be or the time of year you are able to visit this is definitely a place putting at the top of your list and making it happen.
