Newly built 1 bedroom cottage on 3 acres. Beautiful views, close to the beac
Newly built 700 square foot self-contained living space in a private, separate wing of the house. The bedroom and living areas are filled with light, looking out to gorgeous views of the three mountains - Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa and Hualalai. Enjoy the fully equipped kitchen, dining area, cozy reading nook in the living room, spacious bedroom with walk-in closet, brand new bathroom with walk-in shower, wireless internet and Direct TV (movies, tv shows and music channels).
The teak bench in front of the cottage is a perfect place to sit and watch the clouds play over Mauna Kea. Out the back door off the kitchen, there is a new gas barbecue and table and chairs for dining or enjoying sunsets or the bright starry nights. There is also a storage chest full of beach chairs, boogie boards and snorkel gear for your use.
Our 3-acre property has a large house we recently remodeled to include the guest cottage at one end of the house. My husband and I live in a separate wing on the other end of our L-shaped home. The two living spaces are separated by a covered lanai with fencing and landscaping providing privacy for each dwelling.
We respect our guestsʻ privacy and enjoy our own. We are also happy to answer questions you may have to help you enjoy your stay on the island. We will be happy to steer you to our favorite restaurants, beaches, walking trails and island adventures.
We enjoy gardening and have planted fruit trees, some vegetables and herbs and many flowers. You are welcome to share fruits and vegetables that are ripe during your stay - we often have bananas, lilikoʻi, or papaya and fresh herbs.
Situated on the 'dry side' of Waimea, we are half way between Kawaihae and Waimea town, ten minutes drive from both. The best beaches on the island are 10-15 minutes away.
Located at 1800 foot elevation, our days are sunny and warm. Temperatures cool down in the evening - perfect for a good nights sleep. Cardinals, doves, finches and other birds fill our quiet 3-acre property with song.

About Catrinka Holland
After living in the Sierra Nevada for 30 years, we came to Hawaiʻi in 2007.
Catrinka Holland purchased this Cottage in 2012
Why Catrinka Holland chose Island of Hawaiʻi
We love the quick and easy access to both town and beach. This is our favorite climate zone with warm sunny days and cooler nights. It took us five years to find just the right place - 3 acres on a quiet street with expansive views out to three mountains, and space and sun to grow mangos, papayas, bananas, avocados and lilikoʻi. We love the community of Waimea and the great snorkeling beaches just down the road.

Peace and quiet in Hawaii
We've been on the Big Island many times and come here to wind down not to party or hang out at one of the resorts so this place was perfect for us. The ohana is attached to the owner's home but there was never any carry over noise from their side. The property is on a 5 acre parcel and the view from the ohana is rolling hills and all the big mountains on the island. At times we could see the astronomy domes on Mauna Kea. 10 or 15 minutes away in Waimea is a great Foodland grocery store. 10 or 15 minutes away down the hill are all the great Kohala beaches. The ohana itself is clean and airy and nicely appointed. The only possible downside is there is no stove/oven because of zoning. We cooked on the barbi grill outside and the electric hot plate inside and had no problems at all. The owner leaves you alone if you want to be left alone and she takes great care of you and your questions if you don't. I hesitated to write this review because I want the ohana to be open when we come back. Thanks for everything Catrinka. Aloha and Mahalo C&D P.S. There were no noisy roosters in the area and the local birds woke us up gently in the morning.
It was a great pleasure having you here. I look forward to our paths crossing again one day. All the best to you two. Aloha nui loa.
Lovely!
Catrinka was warm and welcoming. Loved the views! Relaxing stay.
The best!
Catrinka is a wonderful and accommodating host. She went the extra mile or two when I needed some help on a matter. We love this area - cool nights for sleeping and awesome views of Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa and Hulalai. You cannot imagine!
There are also a nice variety of bird species if you're into that type of thing. We aren't in love with resorts so this is our type of spot. Clean, bright and cheerful. We will be back!
With lots of aloha and mahalo to Catrinka!

It was such a pleasure having you here! I loved hearing about your birding adventures. Thank you for sending me the list of the 16 bird species you saw and heard at our property. I can also add the Pueo (Hawaiian owl) and Nene to your list, as I have seen them here on occasion. It was a treat that you got to see manta ray in our bay while you were here too. Good things find you! Aloha nui, Catrinka
Perfect place to explore north part of the Big Island
We stayed at Catrinka's rental for 4 nights during our recent trip to BI. We stayed there after visiting south Kona and Volcano national park, and it turned out to be the perfect choice.
The property is well maintained. It has a large size bedroom with king bed and a walk-in closet, living room with nice wooden chairs, a laundry unit, as well as a nice equipped kitchen. Both living room and bedroom have super size windows that give tremendous views to Mauna Kea, and Mauna Loa mountains.
The location is perfect for us. 10 minutes to Waimea where you can buy groceries, and enjoy local resturants. Less than 30 minutes drive to white sandy beaches and a few shopping centers north of Kona. About an hour drive to Hilo, Waipio Valley, and Pololu Valley lookouts. And don't forget the weekend farmers markets in Waimea.
The property is very close to the route 19, but is super quiet. We especially loved to gaze at the stars at nights, it was just so peaceful.
Catrinka is the perfect host. Super friendly yet not intrusive at all. She put a lot of personal touches on the property, and truly make it a home away from home.
Thank you for your lovely review. I'm happy you enjoyed your stay here so well. I enjoyed meeting you both and hope you will come visit again.
The only thing I would add to your wonderful review is that there are several white sand beaches closer than you mentioned. Hapuna, Mauna Kea, Beach 69, Puako -- all of these beautiful beaches are within 10-15 minutes drive from our place. You can also drive a little further south and include the beaches at Mauna Lani, A-Bay and on down the coast.
Mahalo for your kind words and much aloha to you both!
Loved the central location and enjoyed the property!
A plus
Thanks for the useful things you left for the next folks. Hope you're having a great time getting to know the next island on your itinerary :) Warm Aloha to you both
This home is full of Aloha Spirit. The location and views are amazing!
This house is everything described and more. Katrinka is an amazing host. Every window in the house has amazing views. Starting your day off drinking coffee in front of the beautiful picture window is breathtaking. The location is central to everything.
We had an amazing stay and look forward to staying there again in the future.
Mahalo Katrinka!

Location
The Kohala Coast has some of the best beaches in Hawaii 10-15 minutes away. Excellent for snorkeling and scuba and enjoying the sand and surf. The town of Waimea, just 10 minutes away, has excellent restaurants (many utilizing farm to table fresh ingredients), the Kahilu Theatre with world class entertainment, grocery stores, drugstore, hospital, local cultural events, several weekly farmers markets, parks, and shopping. The little town of Kawaihae is 10 minutes drive in the other direction and also has some great restaurants, a great place to buy fresh fish, the Puʻukohola Heiau national park and picnic tables by the bay.
