La Bertheliere which consists of our own house and an attached gîte called L’Huître is situated in the heart of St Germain sur Ay (bourg), a small French village on the west coast of the Cotentin peninsula in Manche and is just 4 kilometres from the fine sandy beach of St Germain sur Ay (plage). Next to the salt marshes and lying midway between Barneville-Carteret and Agon-Coutainville on the 'route touristique' St Germain sur Ay is virtually opposite the island of Jersey and enjoys a similar climate.

The village shop and bar just 75 metres away sells fresh bread and croissants daily, and the excellent boucherie/charcuterie is next door. The village also has an ancient church, library and hotel - their restaurant is open to the public but has to be booked in advance. Down at the beach there are a several bars and eating places and twice a week in summer there is a street market. A variety of supermarkets can be found less than a 10 minute drive from the gÎte.

La Haye du Puits, the nearest market town (8kms away), has plenty of shops and bars and a large weekly market on Wednesdays throughout the year. In August, during the annual Vide Grenier, its streets are closed for the day to traffic and over 300 stalls line the pavements with bric-a-brac and antiques for sale. A little further away is Coutances with its Norman Cathedral, quaint little ‘Jardin des Plantes’ and popular Depot Vente.

La Bertheliere is within easy reach of the D-Day Landing Beaches, Mont St Michel, Cherbourg, Bayeux, and the National Stud at St Lô. From Carteret, with its yachting centre and cliffs overlooking Jersey down to Agon-Coutainville with its popular golf course and 2km long promenade there are a variety of local places to visit along this stretch of coast making our gîte an ideal base for exploring this area of France.

Lovely locale!

  • 5 of 5

Our travel group stayed here for the week in June of '07 and we had a splendid time! It was nicely appointed and very comfortable.

Charming little village, great bakery in town. A 40 minute drive to D Day locations, great countryside and charming property owners.

We would definitely use this property again! I'm sorry I didn't leave feedback earlier, I didn't know this was available.

Summer hols

  • 4 of 5

Hospitality was very good. Clean, well-looked after property. Everything you need for a relaxing holiday. Good place for children as plenty of indoor and outdoor games available, all in excellent condition. We were able to borrow bikes at no cost to do some short cycle rides round the village.

Lovely area of France to explore and the beaches are HUGE!

Schönes Ferienhaus für Familienurlaub

  • 5 of 5

  • 5 of 5
