The cottage welcomes guests with an inviting mix of vintage charm and 21st century updates. It sits in an evolving garden on its own lot, next door to our house. Our north Seattle neighborhood offers a quiet and convenient springboard to the Seattle area's wonderful attractions.
Beadboard and shingle walls, an antique stained glass window and a tile floor in the foyer welcome visitors to the front door. The foyer opens into the warm fir floors of the living room, where a comfortable vintage sofa and rocker allow you to relax with a book, the stereo/iPod dock, or the flat screen TV. Netflix streaming is included, along with a DVD player. A wall of bookshelves is stocked with a variety of reading material, and a cabinet houses an assortment of games and puzzles. Wireless internet and a small desk provide a comfortable workspace if needed.
The newly remodeled kitchen features soapstone counters, custom cabinets, deep farmhouse sink, and new refrigerator, small dishwasher, and microwave hood. (The stove was not replace). Cookware is on hand to prepare full meals for family or friends. The kitchen is stocked with a variety of breakfast foods, plus pantry basics such as cooking oil and spices. An ironing board, original to the house, is built into a cabinet in the kitchen wall (the iron is 21st century!). The floors are the original fir, newly exposed and refinished.
A table and chairs are tucked in a beadboard-lined nook off the kitchen, with large windows offering a view of the back garden. and a heated tile floor.21st century!).
The bathroom maximizes its small footprint with great function and thoughtful details. It features the charm of a marble hex-tile floor with the modern comfort of radiant heat to keep toes toasty. The quiet overhead fan also offers a heater and nightlight. Shelves and wallhooks are conveniently placed to keep your gear handy around the pedestal sink. A vintage light fixture and medicine cabinet combine with tile walls and a curbless shower to create a comfortable, eclectic space.
The larger bedroom features a queen bed with brass headboard. The smaller bedroom offers a double bed with painted iron headboard. In warm weather, both beds offer high thread-count cotton sheets; soft European flannel sheets are supplied in winter. A variety of cotton, wool, and down blankets and comforters allows you to customize the level of warmth and weight you sleep with, and several types of pillows allow you a choice of support. Each bedroom includes a clock radio and ceiling fan.
A new, full-sized, front load washer and dryer are stacked by the back door, making it easy to run a load of laundry if you need to. Detergent and stain remover are kept stocked.
The private backyard offers a patio and yard furniture where you can enjoy your morning coffee or relax with a book. Help yourself to the organically grown herbs for your cooking, or cut some fresh lavender to tuck into your pillowcase. We will work around your schedule for lawn mowing and garden maintenance.
While the neighborhood is quiet, it is by no means remote! Several major bus lines are within a short walk of the cottage, and we have easy access to I-5 and Highway 99, Seattle's main north/south arterials. Walkers and cyclists will find the Interurban Trail just a few blocks away. Shopping, parks, a city pool and library are within 2 miles, and a variety of reasonably priced restaurants are scattered nearby, offering ethnic foods, from Middle Eastern to Vietnamese to classic burgers and Thai.
The cottage is located on the border of Shoreline, convenient to Northgate Mall, Shoreline and North Seattle Community Colleges, and the neighborhoods of Bitterlake, Broadview, Fremont, Haller Lake, Lake City, Laurelhurst, Maple Leaf, Northgate, Olympic View, Pinehurst, and Wedgewood. Our family lives next door to the cottage with cowardly dog Emma and some indoor-only cats. April loves gardening and reading; Mike is a journalist with an interest in history and politics, and Maggie is a college senior majoring in Biology with minors in Math and Chinese. Our adult children and their families live in Kent and Spokane, and we always love visiting with them!
April purchased this cottage in 2012
After living next-door to the cottage for 20 years, we were delighted when our retired neighbor offered us the opportunity to purchase it!
Very comfortable stay while we visited our daughter who lives10 minutes away. Very clean with many amenities. The kitchen is well equipped for cooking. The hosts provided several little treats, including apples, chocolates, coffee, milk, and juice. Also nice to have Netflix. Easy check in. Close access to bus route if one doesn't want to drive to downtown Seattle.
The cottage was cute, clean and well stocked. Instructions left were easy to follow. Everything we needed was there. Private and quiet. We hope to stay here again. Thank you!
We greatly enjoyed our visit to April and Mike's small house in far north Seattle. The hosts are nearby but unobtrusive, and April is extremely thoughtful in providing breakfast materials and anything else you could need during a stay. The garden is beautiful. We hope to return at an early date.
Our stay at April's cottage was wonderful. The gardens are lovely and very inviting to relax in. The kitchen was supplied very well with breakfast foods and snacks - this was so helpful since our flight arrived very late at night. We would definitely stay at the cottage when we return to Seattle. Thank you for sharing the cottage with us.
Loved our week at the cottage, quiet & relaxing after a family cruise in Alaska. We really appreciated the welcome basket of coffee, etc. and all the cereal, milk, etc for breakfast. The house was very comfortable and well stocked with towels, etc. We had been traveling a couple of weeks, so we were happy to have the washer & dryer. Loved the garden & picking fresh blackberries was a treat. Looking forward to visiting here again. Thanks April & Michael for all the information you provided about the Seattle area.
This is the second time we stayed at April's little cottage. It is such a lovely, homey house. We feel right at home when we stay there. The kitchen has been updated and April does a nice job of having anything you might need for breakfast available. The front yard has a great garden to explore and the back yard has a comfortable patio that looks out on April's fruit plants. It is a perfect place for us to stay when we are in Seattle visiting our grandchildren and children.
