Cozy Bluebird Cottage is a sunny sanctuary bordering a soothing wildflower meadow, a two minute stroll to a gorgeous, mile-long sandy beach! Buckets of sunshine pour through the windows -- you get all day sun in the cottage. Lounge in the adirondack chairs along the little meadow to greet the sun in the morning, and then when you come home from the beach move the chairs to create a cocktail circle to watch the sun set over the west marsh. The cottage has just been refurbished and decorated in colorful but chic cottage style by an accomplished interior decorator -- unexpected touches and details abound and are meant to put a smile on your face! New visitors describe the cottage as 'a happy house,' 'stunning,' 'irresistible,' and 'delicious!'
It is small but oh so cozy and delightful. Two bedrooms, one bath, a sweet kitchen, stylish living room, a big screened porch where the breezes waft through, the songbirds in the meadow serenade you and where cocktails by sunset or moonlight beckon.
Stroll on the sand to dinner at the best and coziest restaurant on the Seacoast -- the beloved Carriage House -- then walk home along the water's edge with the moon lighting your sandy path. Fabulous Portsmouth is 15 minutes away with all it's colonial history, bustling seaport, world-class restaurants, river walk bars (the famous 'Decks'), boat rides, the acclaimed Music Hall, theatre, live music, nightlife, Prescott Park outdoor concerts and plays, summer festivals, historic Strawbery Banke and SO much more!
But of course the main attraction is the beach -- considered by some to be the best beach in New England! The tide goes out 100 yards to create a seaside paradise where kids can play wiffleball, build sandcastles, boogie board or surf while the adults walk from end to end for a great workout. The fantastic Summer Sessions Surf Shop is right down the road, where you can take surf lessons, rent boards, learn to paddle board, grab a frothy cappuccino, browse the hip clothing assortment or just people watch! Serious surfers gather at the far end of Jenness at a spot called Sawyers Beach. There is something for everyone at our fabulous, mile long beach!
A grill and a picnic table, plus the adirondack chairs, create a perfect oasis for sunset cocktails or a summer barbeque along the verdant meadow.
So grab your surfboard, your picnic basket, your birding glasses, your sunscreen and and create memories at magical Bluebird Cottage!
I grew up in nearby North Hampton and have rented homes at Rye Beach for 15 years, and finally I just had to buy one! Even though we now live in California (but still spend the summers on the seacoast), I think seacoast New Hampshire is truly one of the greatest places in the world. My three boys have grown up learning to surf, sail, play golf and tennis, bridge jump, fish in these parts and I can't imagine a better place to spend childhood summers.
Kathleen Mahoney purchased this cottage in 2013
The sunny, corner lot just spoke to me. I anticipate building a bigger, Nantucket style cottage here in the future, but for the time being Bluebird Cottage feels just right! I named it Bluebird Cottage because the wildflower meadow that borders the house captivated me -- and I was surprised and delighted to see birders there with their binoculars a few times when I was considering buying the cottage. Then when I was shopping for furnishings I kept stumbling on items with birds (and bluebirds in particular) -- they kept popping up in my path -- so the name just happened; it was meant to be!
Seacoast New Hampshire is fantastic. There is SO much to do here in the summer. The beach, antique shopping, incredible food in Portsmouth, road biking, the Revolutionary history, more more more. I will leave a big binder with ALL the info you need to have an unforgettable vacation at Bluebird Cottage.
We enjoyed our time at the ocean and the home was just right for our stay. The weather was perfect and the area had everything one might want or need within a short distance. We loved our time at the bluebird cottage.
We had a wonderful time at this cottage in Rye. Great location (just across the street from the beach, with easy access), nice and clean, and well stocked. The beds and seating was very comfortable, and the kitchen was well-equipped with everything needed to cook all types of meals. Will definitely rent again! Bring (or rent) a surfboard and/or boogie board - the beach is perfect for that!
Bluebird cottage was great. Very close to Jenness Beach. Owner very responsive. Highly recommended.
I could not have asked for a better place to stay than this charming cottage. I spent several weeks there this fall while visiting my son. It was extremely comfortable, and Kathleen's decorating skills can't be beat! The cottage is absolutely adorable! It is not new, but is filled with character and has everything you need for a great vacation. You can hear the waves crashing across the street and the neighborhood is very quiet and safe. Lots of places to walk the dog. This was a great home base for lots of activities. I went whale watching from rye harbor (a mile away); spent time in Portsmouth and took day trips to the kancamagus hwy for fall colors; Maine wildlife park to see moose; kennebunkport; antique alley (Route 4 from Northwood to Concord, NH where the prices were much better than those closer to kennebunkport.) the scenic drive along the coast in both directions is one of the prettiest coastal drives in the country in my opinion; also easy access to Boston. Kathleen was very attentive and quick to respond to any issues I had (which were negligible). I would definitely recommend this cottage!
Seacoast New Hampshire is a vacation playground all year round -- truly! Summer is incredible, as you will see described below. The beach, the city of Portsmouth, the history, etc. Fall has the amazing foliage -- which wows me every year. Spring is sweet and green and great for long walks on the beach, antique prowling, eating in Portsmouth, visiting historic homes, photographing the natural beauty. And winter brings good skiing only an hour away, or brisk walks in snowstorms with the dog! Please note there is no washer or dryer because this is an old beach house.
