Buon Giorno e Benvenuto!

Hello and welcome to 'Casa delle Case' - our charming 2-bedroom villa apartment located in the spectacular medieval hilltop town of Orvieto.

THE ACCOMODATION:

Located in Orvieto’s oldest and most charming neighborhood of San Giovanale, 'Casa delle Case' offers stunning panoramic views of the sun-drenched Tufa rock wall on which the medieval city was built.

The apartment is spacious in size. At over 700 square feet spread out on 1 level, it comfortably accommodates 1-4 persons.

The open floor plan is bright and airy and is comprised of a living room, dining room, full-sized kitchen, 2 bedrooms, 1 bath and a home office.

With careful attention to detail, the thoughtful renovation of 'Casa delle Case' offers guests the modern conveniences of today, yet incorporates antiquities and Umbrian country décor that retains the Italian charm of yesteryear!

THE AMENITITES:

The apartment is immaculately furnished and comes with most everything needed for a short or long-term stay. The kitchen will appeal to the most discriminating of chefs. With a professional, 5-burner gas range and stocked with all the dinnerware, glassware, pots, pans, utensils and small appliances needed to prepare simple antipasto or a full-fledged 5-course Italian meal.

In the master bedroom, a European matrimoniale (queen) bed awaits your slumber and in the guest bedroom, 2 European singolo (twin) beds offer maximum options for any sleeping arrangement.

You’ll find high quality linens for bed, bath and beyond, along with terrycloth robes, and a hair-dryer for your convenience.

Wi-Fi is supplied for free from the home office and its signal covers the entire apartment – perfect for watching TV/Netflix or streaming music on any personal electronic device in any room.

ORVIETO:

Orvieto is one of the principal sights of the region of Umbria. Its situation is marvelous - perched high above tufa cliffs - showing traces of every phase of history for the past 3 thousand years. 'Casa delle Case' is the perfect base from which to explore the splendor of not only Orvieto but of the Umbrian countryside as well.

Only a few minutes walk from the apartment is the spectacular 14th Century Duomo (cathedral), known for its gleaming mosaic-covered facade it’s one of Italy's top Romanesque - Gothic masterpieces.

The tufa butte on which Orvieto is located is itself riddled with caves and wells dating from Etruscan times to only a couple of hundred years ago. The most spectacular of these is the Pozzo di San Patrizio, a deep well with a double spiral staircase leading to the water source at its base. It dates from 1537 and is 62 m deep. Above ground the streets are lined with shops and cafés where an espresso or caffe latte or cappuccino awaits your call. If something more substantial is on your menu, the collection of excellent Italian restaurants will certainly fit the bill.

'Casa delle Case’s' central location makes it easy for guests to get out and explore the beautiful unspoiled rural regions that Umbria and Tuscany have to offer. From the peaceful Lake Bolsena, to the many other historic hilltop towns, this area boasts many excellent wineries, and groves of olives, grapes and truffles flow over the softly rolling hills.

For ALL of this 'Casa delle Case' will be your home away from home!

About Nancy Singleton Case

Ciao! We are Rob and Nancy Case and our “main” home is in the Washington, DC metro area; specifically, Harpers Ferry, WV. When we're not traveling somewhere in the World for television production (our jobs) we escape to the peace and relaxation we have in our 'Hilltop Home' in Orvieto! We hope you’ll enjoy it as much as we do and we thank you for visiting us at VRBO!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Nancy,

I'd like to add my 2 cents to Gary's comments. I agree with everything he said, but also want to thank you so much for having the binder at the apartment. It really helped to have all of the information in one place for easy reference, and especially to have emergency contact information. In other places, I've had to research what we would dial in case of fire or medical emergency. You made it easy. And I can't tell you how many European washing machines we have struggled to work with; having clear instructions in English made all the difference.

Lastly, it was a pleasure meeting Toni and having her available to answer any questions and deal with any problems. She is warm and approachable, and just knowing we had a contact in the city gave an additional level of comfort that is much appreciated.

Seeing all the details you thought of made me feel that we're so alike (except you're better at decorating) that we would be friends if we ever met. If we could rent properties from you in our other destinations, we would certainly be happy campers.

Thanks for all of your efforts,

Second time and still loving it!

  • 5 of 5

What a lovely place to stay in Orvieto! Comfortable furniture, well equipped kitchen, good beds and wonderful Windows that can be thrown open to welcome another fantastic day in Orvieto. Situated in the medieval end of town the view of the tufa wall and ancient homes out the window is stunning. A walk up two short hills to the centre of town is not difficult and a stop at the bakery at the top of the second hill for the best pizza in town is no hardship. This is our second stay at Casa Delle Case and we are already planning our next. Roy, the property manager was so helpful - welcoming us, picking us up from the train station and answering all queries.Thank you Nancy and Rob. We couldn't recommend your villa more highly.

Elegant and beautifully presented

  • 5 of 5

We felt very much at home in this wonderful apartment and Orvieto was our favourite place in our 5 week trip to Italy. Roy met us at the station and drove us to the Casa. The views were gorgeous at all times of the day and night. Location was convenient and we tried a number of the restaurants and bars nearby and further afield but all within easy walking distance. The food was the best we had anywhere in Italy. Orvieto felt very authentic and did not seem over run by tourists. Highly recommend this apartment. Nancy was responsive with email communication and Roy kept in touch leading up to our arrival.

Wonderful location

  • 5 of 5

My best friend and I stayed at the Casa Delle Case on our very first trip to Italy, and Orvieto was our first stop of 3 locations (and our favorite). We were only there 3 days, but we loved every minute. The apartment location is wonderful and idyllic, everything was clean and lovely. Town was great to explore, the food delicious, and the Duomo remarkable. We went to the morning market and had a great time picking fresh produce and cheeses, and visited a local winery that inspired us to have a whole case of wine sent home. Roy couldn't have been more helpful throughout; we only wished we could have stayed longer!

Italian Country Chic

  • 5 of 5

What a dream house in the quaintest village on top of a cliff! We loved everything about the apartment and found that Orvieto was the cleanest town in Italy. The apartment was tastefully decorated in Italian country chic and just like the pictures. The light from the two large windows made the place. There was an unbelievable view of the old wall, lovely brown stone houses, and a well tended garden out of these windows. The beds, sofa, and chairs were very comfortable, the kitchen was well equipped, and it was all spotlessly clean. There were fresh flowers, yellow sunflowers and a red rose, with local white wine awaiting us when we arrived. Roy was a jewel keeping in touch with us before our visit, taking us to and from the train station, and giving us wonderful tips for our enjoyment. We rented a car and visited several centuries old hill towns, including Civita, Montepulciano, Pienza, and Monticchiello. They were all delightful with lots of flowers everywhere. The Tuscan countryside was breathtaking with every view picture perfect. We ate several times at Cafe Montanucci, enjoying their food and the wood carvings of Michelangeli. There was a tree lined walk on the Northern wall with great views. We also attended Mass in the Duomo and loved hearing the organ with 5500 pipes. What a week! My favorite of our 3 month stay in Italy.

Perfect Vacation Spot

  • 5 of 5

The apartment was spotless and well equipped with everything needed for a stress free stay. Roy, the property manager, was accessible and picked us up from the airport (for a reasonable price). Nancy was very responsive to my questions during the booking process. We loved the location and found it was in just the right location. Just a word of caution, Orvieto is a hill top town and requires walking extensively to see the all the town has to offer. For people with orthopedic/breathing issues, there are a lot of steps required to reach the apartment. We will definitely plan to come back to visit in the future.

Car: not necessary

Orvieto is centrally located in Italy’s Umbria region. It sits alongside the Autostrada A-1 (the spinal cord of the country’s highway system connecting Milan and Naples) so it’s easily accessible by car or train (only 1 hour on the regional train line between Rome Termini and Florence/Santa Maria Novella).

If Arriving By Train…

From outside Orvieto’s train station take the funicolare (funicular rail car) that runs every 10 minutes up to town. From Piazza Cahen take the picturesque 15-minute stroll up the Corso Cavour to the historical center or hop on the bus that drops visitors off at the Duomo or Piazza della Repubblica. Casa delle Case is just a short walk from the center of town.

If Arriving By Car…

There are several parking lots in town, but the closest to Casa delle Case and easiest to access is the Forum Boario lot on the western end of the town, accessible from the Strada della Stazione to Via delle Conce. This lot offers both open and covered garage parking and has an escalator (scala mobile) or elevator (ascensore) up to the center of town.

Must Sees…

Duomo di Orvieto - This 14th century Roman Catholic Cathedral is one of the most spectacular and important in Italy. Its Capello di Madonna di San Brizio contains Luca Signorelli’s (c. 1445 –1523) Last Judgment, considered by many to be his masterpiece.

Orvieto Underground - This tour leads you through an utterly fascinating subterranean network of medieval caves, tunnels and Etruscan wells.

Torre del Moro - The 13th century clock tower chimes on the hour, half and quarter hours, so you’ll never need a wristwatch. Climb the 270 stairs to the top for a bird’s eye view of Orvieto’s terracotta rooftops and surrounding countryside.

Pozzo di San Patrizio (St. Patrick’s Well) - Dating back to 1537, the largest of the town’s subterranean wells measures 62-meters-deep and has two spiral staircases, one for descending and one for ascending, that provided residents essential access to the water source at its base.

Crocifisso del Tufo Etruscan Necropolis (Etruscan Tombs) - One of only two Etruscan necropolises in Umbria, it dates back to the mid-6th century B.C. and is an enlightening example of the engineering superiority of this ancient but highly advanced civilization.
