Nice Stay But Needs Some Updates
The neighborhood is great. The hallway is long and not very clean and the stairs are very, very narrow - not fun trying to get suitcases up and down the stairs. The apartment furniture needs to have some updates.
Location excellent, view outstanding. Easy to get around. Unfortunately lots of upgrades needed, kitchen pots and pans, cutlery, cutting boards etc. No stove just three plate cook top. Bedding and towels need replacing. Lighting especially in shower needs light and switch replaced. Owner did not mention the construction that has been going on in the building for some time. Unable to open bedroom curtains or window because of staging erected. Last day there was more staging erected in the front room window. I think owners of units should let all prospective renters know before they arrive.
Good location, nice host
We enjoyed our staying. Marcel and Rianne were very attentive and very helpful.
Pros: Four star location with great view on a canal. We were able to walk everywhere.
Plenty of heat, which we needed in May.
Owners live in building and allowed us to leave our luggage in their apartment very early in the morning the day we arrived.
Comfortable seating in living space
TV and audio equipment doesn't work. Why have it there?
Kitchen appliances and coffee pot not clean; had to scrub it up and prewash every dish we used.
Very difficult to get into closets in bedroom - dirty pair of socks on the floor of one of them.
Didn't have hot water for a time one night and couldn't getting touch with owners.
Hiccups at Canalview Apartment Amsterdam April 2019
This apartment has location, location, location with a wonderful view of the canal from the living room. In addition, we found the written information to guide our stay in Amsterdam to be extremely valuable. BUT, after reading the March 2019 I would have looked for another place to stay if there hadn't been a 60 day non refundable clause in the vrbo contract. This could be a five star, amazing vrbo if the following were done: wash & keep clean the tile floor entry way, upgrade the linens and keep them clean (there was blood on a quilt that I removed from the closet that my husband was going to use)., upgrade the mattresses, publish accurate pictures of the apartment: twin beds vs. the pictured double bed, remove the televison if it isn't connected to service. show that the toilet room is separate from the shower. Most important for me was the smell that came from the toilet room. Clearly this room needs a vent. I also question the electrical wiring which I feel is only being fixed temporarily. For this reason I would recommend that a renter bring a portable smoke/CO2 box. U.S. visitors please note that this apartment is on "our" second floor. Floor one is floor zero in Europe. It is my hope that the owner will take these suggestions seriously and that these easy fixes will be made. This apartment could be amazing.
Pros and Cons of our stay
This flat is centrally located and has a beautiful view of canal. Trams are within a block of the flat. This flat is about two blocks from Ann Frank House Museum.
There was no TV available although the listing showed a tv. Not that we wanted to watch TV while on vacation but it is nice to have option of watching movie. Marcel made it sound like there was not expectation of TV service. It appears that he just does not pay for cable. His comment was that he hoped we brought our laptop. Luckily we had but he should disclose on the listing.
The linens were dingy and very poor quality. There was only a bottom sheet on bed, not top sheet. The extra pillows had no pillow cases and extra blanket had blood on it. There were only five towels when we arrived. I asked Marcel if we could have more towels. He said that he would deliver more towels half way through our stay. The towels were very poor quality.
While being given a tour of flat on our arrival Marcel mentioned that there was construction taking place on building. During our stay there was a construction crew that showed up and worked. It was noisy. The work was in the middle portion of building directly outside of bedroom window. Roofing material was stacked in the hall at entry.
Marcel mentioned that one of the burners on stove did not work. I just went through reviews, that issue is listed as far back as 2016. Obviously repairing the burner is not that important. The refrigerator is the very small ones you see in hotels. The freezer in this refrigerator looked like it had not been defrosted in 10 years.
The day before we left the light in the room that shower is in stopped working. I emailed Marcel but he didn't seem to be concerned. We took showers in dark. His response was that his construction guy had wired lighting incorrectly.
