Quintessential Amsterdam!

  • 5 of 5

This delightful apartment overlooks the widest canal in the western expansion of Old Amsterdam. The Keizersgracht canal is graced with many wonderful old houses, warehouses, churches and commercial buildings and variety of tour boats, salon boats, working boats and private watercraft large and small provides a constant show viewed through the three large windows looking down from the apartment. Plenty of space and amenities. The hosts are extremely helpful and friendly.

Would easily recommend anyone to enjoy this place, we stayed for two months . . . will do it again.

Excellent 4 Day Stay

  • 5 of 5

We had an awesome stay at Marcel's place. The location was just perfect, right in the middle of everything. You step outside his door and you have the whole city right there- great neighborhood and very safe feeling. Lots of food choices all around within blocks- or a short walking distance.

The space itself was perfect for my wife and I. It was charming and really fun to spend our trip in an old building. Marcel was very good with corresponding and contacting him. He was informative with information about traveling around town and little things we should know about that made our stay easier.

I highly recommend Marcel's place if you are visiting Amsterdam- you will enjoy it immensely!

Thank you so much Marcel for a fabulous stay!

Fabulous Apartment in Fantastic Location!!

  • 5 of 5

Marcel's apartment was better than advertised! The location was perfect with one of the best views in the city. The apartment was VERY comfortable with some very nice pieces of furniture. The kitchen was well-equipped, the shower and bed were great. Marcel was incredibly nice and completely understands the needs of travelers wanting to feel at home while on the road. He even had a multi-plug strip next to one of the couches in the living room. It was very handy, considering all the electronic devices people have nowadays. He also provided us with two sets of keys. Most home owners only provide one set, which is very inconvenient. And, at the last minute, we needed a late checkout. Marcel quickly made some phone calls, rearranged a few details and accommodated our need with a smile! What a great guy and a great apartment!

Good location

  • 4 of 5

This apartment is on the second floor of a three story building that borders on the Keizersgracht canal, one of the major canals that ring the old city of Amsterdam. Great location to access most of Amsterdam's major attractions. The views out of our living room windows were charming and entertaining. The city is served by an outstanding network of trams that will get you close to all of the attractions and interesting places. A tram station is just a few steps from the apartment. Marcel, the owner, provided an excellent personal guide to the city, location of basic necessities, and day trips outside of the city.

If it matters to you the apartment is in one of the least architecturally attractive buildings in the neighborhood. The steps up to the apartment, as you might expect in a very old building, require a little more care and attention to traverse that you might experience on stairs in the US. The apartment interior is clean and pleasant if not a little eclectic and the kitchen is well equipped. The toilet is separate from the rest of the bathroom in a small closet sized space off of the main hallway. Beware if you have a sensitive nose, as it is unventilated and they use a very strong "air freshening" deodorant to compensate for the lack of ventilation.

We found Amsterdam to be interesting, mostly delightful, architecturally amazing, and, occasionally, disappointing. The disappointment mostly centered around the fact that Amsterdammers do not tend to care for the cleanliness of their city in a manner that we anticipated. It is not uncommon to see garbage collecting in corners, on streets and in the canals. There are lots of smokers, and the cigarette butts collect in the joints between the cobblestones. On one morning we looked out our apartment window to see a 2-3 year old child throw a candy wrapper into the canal as her mother looked on without comment.
