Mauna Lea (Mountain Joy) Manor is a 5 acre private estate tucked away in the Kona Coffee country on the slopes of Hualalai volcano, overlooking the small coastal town of Kailua-Kona. On this property there are 4 cottages available rent. Each cottage is a one bedroom studio with a loft and one bathroom.
Also on the property there is a dance/yoga studio you may use or attend classes (private/group). We also have a fishing/snorkel boat called the Kahele available for charter. There is a playground with swings and a rope swing in the forrest behind the houses… there are ancient Hawaiian ruins in the forrest and a big bamboo grove that we call 'the temple' because it is a 20 ft diameter circle of bamboo that feels like a sacred place. We also have several surfboards, bodyboards, and snorkel gear available for you to borrow when you stay with us.
Our family lives on the property in the Manor house. We have three boys who love to play with other children. My husband is a fisherman/cement mason and I am a local artist and I also teach art & dance. If you enjoy dancing, I am happy to connect you with the fun places to go and the interesting people to meet in our local dance community (tango, zouk, salsa, bachata, bellydance, ballroom, etc.). As we both grew up on this island, we are happy to share with our guests the best places to find and if available, we are happy to be your guides to black/green/white sand beaches, waterfall lagoons, the best fishing spots, etc. My husband is also a really fabulous chef and loves to feed people from the unique bounty of our island.
Our property is the ideal set up for retreats and workshops. If you have a group of 20 or less people interested in a dance/art/yoga/photography/etc worksop/retreat- we have the classroom for your educational classes and the beds for your participants all on property. We can set up meals, activities, and even a photographer to document your experience with enough notice. These 'camp'-like experiences can be a lot of fun and we make the planning as effortless for you as possible (different fees might apply for this kind of group experience).
I'm an artist, writer, & dancer who grew up in Hawai'i. I'd love to show around the island.
Stephanie Bolton purchased this cottage in 2004
We built Mauna Lea Manor- my father is the architect.
We have an on site Dance/Yoga studio you may use during your stay- or attend any of our weekly classes. We also have a fire pit just outside the studio that is nice on cool mountain evenings for talking story and keeping warm while star gazing. In our back woods we have a fun archery course with a great teacher who can make you or rent you a gorgeous bow to use.
It was a special experience to stay in the Holualoa area of the Big Island. The cottages are set amidst some beautiful scenery of huge trees, flowering plants, colorful birds, and even one of the famous Kona coffee plantations. The owners have put in quite a lot of thought to allow you to get a feel of the Island of Hawaii, and helped us with tips on finding our way around the Island for our sightseeing. The airport, town center and beach are just a short drive away from this residential area, for you to go out for the activities offered in the area, or bring in supplies to enjoy in this homelike setting. It does not feel cramped like a hotel room with a ton of other people in close vicinity. The decor in this cottage showed the artistic creativity of some person or people but all done with thought given to safety and convenience as well. For being in a small footprint the cottage included quite a lot in the kitchen, with a grill and picnic table just outside the door. It does not have air conditioning but the windows and screened sliding door let in outside air and there are fans to circulate air, and also an electric fireplace for the times when it is cold. Be prepared to hear roosters crowing around you at any time of the day and night-quite attractive critters though.
We totally enjoyed our time at Mauna Lea Manor. The location is great. You feel like you are in a secluded tropical paradise, yet you are just 10 minutes away from downtown Kona with plenty of restaurants and activities. Stephanie and Matt are great hosts. Matt took us out snorkeling on his boat to Kalakekua Bay . The water was perfect and we saw lots of tropical fish. We were even escorted to the bay by a school of dolphins that swam next to our boat. Many nice beaches are within a 15 minute drive. You will need a car to drive up the hill but the nice cool nights are worth it. We stayed in one of the rooms of the main house but the cottages are charming with kitchenettes and private patios.
It is a perfect place for a family reunion or any kind of retreat or getaway.
