Beachfront apartment in Hendaye Plage

Bedrooms 3
Space 861 sq. ft.
Property type apartment
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

3 double bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, sleeps 6

Villa Jeanne d'Arc is a substantial Basque villa in front of the beach. It is divided into 7 self-contained flats. The area offers a unique combination of sea and mountains, France and Spain, and all the aspects of Basque culture. The transport and shopping facilities are excellent.

Seaside and mountains: The huge sandy beach is just across the road. Bathing is safe, and children's activities (beach and sailing school) are professionally organised. Waves are sometimes surfable, but better known surfing beaches are close by. Hendaye-Plage also has a beautiful and substantial new marina, from where ferries cross to Fontarrabia (tapas, historic centre etc.) The Pyrenees are within minutes, and provide spectacular walking, views and bird-watching - eagles/vultures etc in the region, migrating birds (cranes etc.) in October. The rivers offer numerous organised rafting opportunities.

Sport: There is a tennis club in Hendaye-Plage, and many superb golf courses within 30 mins either side of the border. Sailing and motor boats can be hired at the marina, from where sea fishing trips and water ski-ing are also organised. Surfing is the best in Europe.

Basque culture: The proud Basque traditions are all around, both in France and Spain. Their pretty villages are in the hills and on the coast, with their beautiful churches, pelota courts and many restaurants and cider farms (with delicious eating and atmosphere) offering their unique cuisine.

Fantastic apartment on Hendaye beach

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week in this great apartment. Although the weather wasn't perfect we were never lost for anything to do as Hendaye is well situated for Biarritz and St Jean De Luz to the North and San Sebastián in Spain to the south.

The apartment itself was clean and there is plenty of room for 6 people, with three bedrooms that sleep two each. There's a lovely balcony in the living room that overlooks the sea and is a great suntrap for a nice glass of rose after a hard day at the beach! The kitchen is a good size - with everything you need in it including a dishwasher, which we were very pleased about. There's also a washing machine in one of the two good bathrooms.

We travelled with our 2 and a half year old daughter and found the cupboard full of beach goodies a life saver! Buckets and spades, beach balls, boogie boards, parasol, beach chairs - it has everything! We even left behind a little inflatable boat that I'm sure will come in handy for someone! The cupboard also has loads of games in it - scrabble and boggle to name but two.

The beach itself is great - long and sandy, and it is literally on your doorstep, which is fantastic. It's very kid friendly in that the sea stays shallow for quite a while but it's also great for swimming and we were surprised at how warm it was for the Atlantic in late June.

Around and about there are lots of shops and restaurants - even a gluten free pizza place, which was very useful as my wife has developed a gluten allergy during her second pregnancy (she's 7 months pregnant at the mo). We did our main shopping in Al Campo just over the Spanish border - much cheaper than french supermarkets and very good quality food!

Highly recommended are trips to st jean de Luz, San Sebastian - both about 20 mins by car, and Hondarribia, which is just over the bay and you can catch a 10 minute boat from the harbour. We had an excellent tapas there!

Overall we would highly recommend this villa, both in terms of location and comfort. You can chill all week on the beach, go for a spa (owned by ex french rugby player Serge Blanco) or explore the area's markets and eateries. yum! We will definitely be going back, but with another little angel next time!

fantastic location, lovely apartment

  • 5 of 5

This really is a lovely apartment in a great location, just metres from the beach and close by to some great locations in the Basque country.

The apartment is a nice size for a family - the kitchette is quite small but has everything you need to prepare meals for the family. There is a hob and a microwave/oven combi which is more than adequate for cooking a full meal - we ate in every night (given current exchange rates!) There is also a dishwasher in the kitchen if you don't fancy washing up the old fashioned way. We loved sitting in the lounge or balcony overlooking the beach. There is also a little hut selling churros (or Txurros in basque) just opposite that are a bit like hot strips of donuts sprinkled with sugar and delicious after the sun has gone down and it starts to get cool!

The apartment was clean when we arrived, everything in good working order etc, facilities as described.

The bedrooms are a reasonable size, with lots of wardbrobe space. There are electric radiators in all the rooms which came in handy at the end of October.

The building itself is full of character, we loved the high ceilings and the traditional feel of the place. There is a parking place provided right outside the main door, so no worries there.

The area itself is fantastic - the beach at Hendaye is superb, very gently shelving so great for kids, I was also suprised by the number of surfers in the area. You have got St Jean de Luz and Ciboure within 10 minutes drive which are both really pretty, and justy over the border in Spain San Sebastian is very pretty in the old town. The little ferry from the marina at Hendaye into Hondarrabia in Spain is also great. It has such a different feel to the other side of the river - it is a true part of the Spainish Basque country yet only 500 metres from Hendaye!! It is also just a 1hr 15 min drive through fantastic scenery along the new N121A road to Pamplona where you can follow the route of the famous "run of the bulls". We also enjoyed taking the rack railway up the Rhune mountain from where you get amazing views of the Pyrenees, into Spain and north along the atlantic coast of Spain.

After spending a week here we feel that we have just scratched the surface of what the area has to offer and fully intend to return at some point in the near future, and I would not hesitate to stay hewre again,

Perfect location in a lovely part of France

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time staying in this villa. It really is in a perfect spot, just metres from the beach at Hendaye Plage. It is only a 20 minute drive from San Sebastien in one direction, and Biarritz in the other. The apartment is very well laid out, although it is a bit of a struggle to fit more than one person in the kitchen.

There is a huge cupboard in the lounge area full of all the beach toys you could ever need, plus a great supply of books (both English and French) and board games. There was also a leisure map of the Aquitaine area which was very useful.

We ate in most nights, shopping at the larger Champion supermarket in town. Be warned - French supermarkets don't tend to supply carrier bags so take your own! The 8 a huit supermarket in Hendaye Plage is more convenient, but also more expensive.

The position is perfect for access to the mountains, beaches, nearby city of San Sebastien and plenty of other places. You would never get bored here. I hear Hendaye can get very busy in the height of Summer, but I'm sure it's still lovely.

My boyfriend and I went out and were joined later in the week by my parents and sister, and everyone absolutely loved it. Definitely suitable for all ages, but the steps up to the first floor would restrict it for those with walking difficulties. I have put suitable for 55+ but bear in mind the access to even the main front door is up a series of steps.

I would definitely recommend hiring a car to get around if you want to do some exploring. At the time of year we went, buses were every 2 hours, and only Monday to Friday. The is a parking space provided, so parking isn't a problem.

We will definitely stay here again.
