About Caroline Ferber
Caroline and Robert (Bob) Ferber live in Baltimore, MD and have 4 children. Bob grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, while Caroline grew up in Paris, France. Bob and Caroline purchased the house from his family in 2008 and constructed a large addition using timbers from a tobacco warehouse from Lexington, Kentucky.

Why Caroline Ferber chose Mechanicsville
The farm has been in Bob's family for many generations. They used the property as a getaway for many years, enjoyed its privacy and found it to be a perfect escape to crab, fish, swim, kayak, and boat. During the off-season it's nice for spending Thanksgiving with a large number of family or as a getaway during the winter where you can watch the geese and ducks on both the farm and water sides of the house.
What makes this House unique
This house provides the unusual mix of living on a farm without having to get up early and do chores. Inside it's bright with water views from every room and the old pine beams provide a warmth that is hard to find in any other home. We find much of the time is spent on the screen porch either sitting with friends and family or eating crabs and fresh Amish corn on the porch table. The pool is another treat as it's so refreshing and provides 180 degree views of the river right out front.

Great family getaway
The house was beautiful, pictures do not do it justice! Views of the river from every room and open floor plan makes it perfect for larger families or groups. Owner very responsive and lovely to work with. Everything you need is there. just bring your family and relax!
This was an amazing property in all aspects. Would highly recommend it.
Incredible home for making great family memories!
Sandgates was the perfect place for our extended family to spend a long Easter weekend together! The pictures do not do the house justice - it has been beautifully updated while keeping the character and charm of an old farmhouse. The owners were so lovely and helpful as we planned our stay. We made the most of everything Sandgates had to offer - we played games on the porch, drank coffee on the dock, went on kayak adventures, swam in the River (in April!), ate crabs, played volleyball, had an amazing easter egg hunt....you name it! The living spaces in the home are well thought out and the beds were all super comfortable. We hated to leave - we can see why this property if so special to the owners' family. Our family is already trying to plan a return trip! The fact that they are willing to share something this special with others say a lot about who they are...we LOVED our time at Sandgates!
Other great things:
* The house has everything you could need - the kitchen is very well stocked.
* Wonderfully clean and organized
* Incredible views in every direction
* Space to spread out, but multiple places to hang as a larger group
* The beach and lawn are huge - we created a lot of fun ways to use the space
* Comfortable and clean linens included
* Smart TV - only turned it on once all weekend but were able to watch Game of Thrones!
A perfect place to enjoy natural beauty and the company of friends or family!
Sand Gates Farmhouse is a charming home. Recently, my husband and I joined six other friends at Farmhouse for three days/nights. The water view is spectacular. The kitchen is well organized and perfectly equipped. The bedrooms are beautifully furnished, and the bathrooms are large and well-lit. This is our second stay at the Farmhouse and I would not hesitate to recommend it to other visitors to Southern Maryland.
Beautiful comfortable property
Our extended family of 10 adults and 2 children stayed here over Easter weekend when in town for a family wedding. The property is beautiful and comfortable for all. Plenty of bathrooms so all were able to get ready for the weekend wedding we all attended. Bedrooms were comfortable. Screened porch was great for mornings and evenings. We have rented several times from VRBO and this house is one of the best we have used. We wish we had been there a little later in the year, when it would be warmer. We would have liked to use the fishing gear, crabbing traps, and water gear that was provided. We highly recommend!
Beautiful home to celebrate Thanksgiving w Our family!
What a perfect setting. Beautiful spacious country home on the water, nestled in nature. Lovely decor, cozy beds w fresh linens and soft pillows on all beds! We spent nights in the family room toasty by the fireplace. Huge kitchen had everything we needed to eat all our meals in, even Thanksgiving! We have been staying at VRBO over 20 years from Maine to Florida...this is by far one of the best. Caroline was always helpful and accommodating, went above and beyond to make our stay wonderful.
Sandgates Farmhouse is located on an old tobacco farm fronting the Patuxent River in rural St. Mary's County MD. The Patuxent River is surprisingly undeveloped and has almost no boat traffic even though it's less than 50 miles from Washington DC. Though the house is very private, it's close to shopping, restaurants, naval base, and Solomons Island.
Fish and crab off dock or by boat on the Patuxent. The mouth of the Chesapeake is about 30 minutes south and the beautiful head of the Patuxent River winds over an hour north.
While the house is ideal for a relaxing getaway with family and friends, there are a number of key attractions nearby. They include:
- Maryland Crabbing and Fishing: In nearby areas as well as on Patuxent Rover and Chesapeake Bay.
- Amish country: Just a few miles away on Friendship School Road
- Solomons Island: Museum, docks, and many restaurants and bars.
- Sodderley Plantation: Special events, tours, and walks.
- St. Clement's Island: Where Maryland was founded and a good day trip.
- St. Mary's City: Home of St. Mary's College and Maryland's first city.
- Patuxent Naval Base: Largest employer in area and where many activities are held.
- Three Notch Road Bike Trail: On old rail line near property.
- Farm and Wine Tours: In numerous locations in St. Mary's County.
