Built in around 1900, the house has been decorated to a high standard and is very spacious. Downstairs is a big open plan well-equipped kitchen and dining room with a very large living room next door with French doors out to the garden and pool. Upstairs there are two double rooms and one twin all with fabulous views. There is a large family bathroom with bath and walk-in shower.
La Blanchetterie is a beautiful charentaise farmhouse and gîte set in the quiet village of Chenac, facing south with fantastic views of the Gironde estuary, just 10 minutes from the nearest beach of Meschers. Complete with pool, the property is set in an acre of garden, surrounded by vineyards and sunflowers. The adjoining village of St Seurin d'Uzet used to be the centre of caviare production in France. The region is famous for not just caviare, but oysters, wine and cognac.
The property has been restored to keep a lot of the original features, including exposed beams and stone fireplaces. Each house is well equipped, all linen and bath towels are provided.
The owners, Katie and Mike Harrington, live at the property in a converted barn behind the house and are at hand to answer any questions, and maybe take you on a tour of a working vineyard for those who are keen to do a bit of tasting, including the local Pineau.
Golf: There are a number of golf courses in the area - Royan, Palmyr, Saintes and Cognac.
Bicycles: We have a range of bicycles for our guests to use.
Meals: We will quite happily cook for you on any amount of evenings during your stay.
Don't hesitate to ask us for more details on this.
Having lived in London for many years, we had a year in Vietnam which really made us realise that we wanted to try something different.
Katie and Mike Harrington purchased this farmhouse in 2001
We looked at many houses before we found La Blanchetterie. It ticked every box including a perfect location in the quiet French countryside but only 10 minutes in the car from the beach.
Had a wonderful time, great house, great weather, will be telling all our friends about it! Thank you for your hospitality Katie and Mike, we hope to return soon.
What a fantastic week - weather brilliant (too hot sometimes, if that is possible). Thanks Katie and Mike for sharing your home with us - it is lovely.
What a fantastic two weeks. The weather has been great. The kids have spent most of the holiday in the pool. Cognac, the zoo, La Rochelle all well worth a visit. The most enjoyable part has been the excellent bike rides to Talmont, Mortagne and Port Maubert. Finally a very big thank you to Mike and Katie who have been excellent hosts.
We have had a great time. We particularly enjoyed Katie cooking us a meal, Saintes, Le Chateua des Enigmes for the kids, Cozes market, bike ride to Mortagnes.
We had a really nice time again. The weather has been great and its been fun playing with Holly and Stevie. Katies cooking is really yummy!
We had a wonderful week in the farmhouse.
Relaxing and everything that we needed was there. Our young children loved the pool and the big garden (particularly the plums...). We are have already booked 2 weeks back there next year and cannot wait to go back.
We had a wonderful stay in this fantastic house. We were delighted to arrive to find such a comfortable, beautiful house to call our own for a week. It truly was a home frome home (except nicer than our home 😉). The gardens are just fantastic, a brilliant pool and our boys were delighted with the abundance of plums free for picking in the orchard!
The local area is lovely with great towns to visit and beautiful beaches on your doorstep.
Katie and Mike were fantastic hosts, even arranging for fresh bread to be delivered in the morning.
Couldn't recommend highly enough.
A place to chill two gites together each very comfortable, one much bigger nice swimming pool , excellent hosts , then mins from coast and many good restaurants and beaches to visit .Most enjoyable
We stayed in the slightly smaller gite attached to the farmhouse which was still very spacious and roomy for the 4 of us. The kitchen is well equipped for cooking at home and the lounge comfy for relaxing in the evening, playing games or watching dvds. The bedrooms are comfortable with one double bedroom and 2 additional interconnecting bedrooms - perfect for families with children. There is one bathroom with a shower which was clean and well kept. The garden is very pretty with a designated space for each of the house to bbq and sit outside - the children loved playing on the swing at the bottom of the garden and spent lots of time in the pool. Katie and Mike, the owners were great hosts and happy to help out with washing (there is no washing machine) and as they live at the rear of the building they are on site in case there are any unexpected issues. The village is very quiet - no local boulangerie - although you can have bread delivered on request from the one in the next village. There are also no restaurants/bars so the only downside of the surrounding area is that you have to hope in the car for eating out, shopping etc. Would definitely recommend this as a beautiful house to stay if you are looking for something away from it all that is very relaxing but easy to get to beaches and local towns.
two adjoining properties and we stayed a week in each. Both were very comfortable , the swimming pool was a blessing in the hot weather and the hosts could not have been more friendly , there when needed but never intrusive.
Near several good restaurants and beaches -much enjoyed -to quote MacArthur(sort of) -we shall return!
This was our second stay at La Blanchetterie - and this was the first time after 15 years of Gite type holidays in all parts of France that we went back to the same place. The reasons were simple - great house (we have stayed in both), great pool, great beaches, lovely envirnoment/weather and fantastic hosts.
Katie and Mike really showed us genuine hospitality - Mike is very good at topping up the wine glass and Katie's cooking is a real treat.
There is plenty to do but with 2 kids (under 10) we tended to be at the beach or near the pool.
A truely relaxing holiday - can't recommend it enough - we will go back again soon.
Chenac is situated in a great location with something for everyone. There are fantastic beaches, the closest, Meschers, being just 10 minutes away, St Georges de Didonne 15 minutes and Royan 20 minutes, and all with a variety of water sports. There are a selection of great golf courses at Saintes, Royan, Cognac and La Rochelle. Anyone who like walking and cycling there are endless trails to follow with plenty of birds watching and wild life to sport. And of course endless chances to sample the wines and cognac of the region. Of course should you wish to you can simply laze about by the pool and enjoy the peace.
The very pretty ports of Mortagne and Les Monards are very close by with their choice of restaurants and bars to sample the local cuisine. There are also weekly markets selling lots of fantastic local produce.
The historic towns and cities of Bordeaux, Saintes, Cognac and La Rochelle are all worth a visit and the Medoc can be accessed by ferry from Royan.
