Welcome to Sleeping Bear Cottage! Our cottage is located directly on Little Traverse Lake in the heart of Sleeping Bear National Shoreline.....VOTED MOST BEAUTIFUL PLACE IN AMERICA in 2011 by Good Morning America!!
Just across our scenic road you can hike or cross- country ski the trails to Good Harbor Bay on beautiful Lake Michigan. Built in 2005, the cottage is perfect for large family gatherings, or two-family vacations. It is a well appointed cottage located on Little Traverse Lake with private 110' shallow sandy waterfront with dock. (Our waterfront description varies from year-to-year but for the last 10 years we have NOT had a BEACH. Sorry. The water level of our lake has risen and covered our beach. Please contact owner for up-to-date information on the waterfront.) There are 6 bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms!
There are two master suites each with their own private bathroom. One is located on the main floor and has a king-size bed and private balcony overlooking the lake. The other master suite is located on the second floor and has a queen-size bed. This bedroom also faces the lake and has an adorable window seat where you can curl up and read a good book.
Other bedrooms on the second floor:
1. bunk room with two bunk beds (4 twins in total)--sleeps 4. Overlooks front yard and woods/road
2. bunk room with lake views: 1 bunk bed with twin bed on top and a double bed on bottom--sleeps 3.
3. bedroom with a full-size bed and window seat overlooking the lake.
These three bedrooms just mentioned share a hallway bathroom. We also provide a crib if you are traveling with an infant. Bring your own crib sheets.
We also have a large mudroom/laundry room with washer and dryer for your use. A 1/2 bathroom is located here. All bathrooms come with hand soap, toilet paper, and tissue. Showers come with shampoo, conditioner and bath wash.
The lower level walkout has a private bedroom with a king-sized bed. Also in the lower level: full bathroom, game room, and the media room is furnished with a 65 inch TV! Kids love the lower level with the ping-pong table, pool table, air hockey, giant TV,and foosball table. The wall of windows and sliding glass door gives a great view of the lake.
In the summer, take your morning coffee out to the screened porch to enjoy the sunrise over the lake. Or relax in the hot tub. Bring your inland lake motor boat, fishing boat, kayak, canoe, sailboat, mountain bike, road bike, X-C skis, for a vacation you will remember forever.

Scott has been traveling to Leelanau Peninsula since he was a boy. He has always felt that the area has magical qualities. Both Scott and Kerry enjoy hiking the trails and biking the roads. They are constantly in awe of the scenery and views. They enjoy the secluded lakes, beaches, and dunes. They are inspired by the endless possibilities for fun and enjoyment in this area. When their children were small, they purchased vacant land on Little Traverse Lake hoping to someday build their dream cottage. This became a reality in 2005. They hope you also find the magic.....
Why Owner chose Leelanau County
Little Traverse Lake is right in the middle of the Sleeping Bear National Shoreline. Our cottage is located on the north side of the lake with the National Shoreline of Lake Michigan across the street...a short hike away. Our cottage is located halfway between the resort towns of Leland and Glen Arbor. We ride our bikes into either town to the coffee shop or bakery. Across the lake (on M22) there is a small store which stocks basic grocery needs and a local farm market. We hope someday that Sugar Loaf Mountain ski resort will open again. It is located right across the lake from us. Right now, it makes a great hike with unbelievable views of the majestic Lake Michigan, Lime Lake, and Little Traverse Lake. For downhill skiing, we travel to Crystal Mountain in Thompsonville (40 miles) or The Homestead Resort (7 miles).

Everything it says and more
We stayed here with another family, 14 of us total, and it was wonderful! The house is as beautiful and well maintained as described, and was like having your home-away-from home. The bedrooms held all of us comfortably, and the two master bedrooms work great for two families. The avid fisherman in the group caught several small-mouth bass, from standing in the water and in the boat they brought. There are many items at the house to use to enjoy the lake, the kitchen had everything we needed, and the grill is very large for big groups. You are just a couple miles from golf, half hour to the dunes, 15 minutes to Glen Arbor, right in the middle of winery country, close to canoeing/kayaking (plus two kayaks at the house for the lake), close to many breweries/cider/distilleries, half hour to Traverse City, 1 mile from Lake Michigan, close to the bike trail, plus many other Northern Michigan sites. If you can't find something to do from here, you're not trying. We also hung out at the house a few nights, and there was never a time we felt cramped. Between the deck and the house there is more than enough seating at tables for all to eat together, and there is plenty of seating in the house to relax. The game room in the lower level will bring out the competitors for games everyone can play.
By the time we found out how great it was it was too late to book for 2018, so we are hoping to go back in 2019. This home is well worth the rental and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a house that will hold a larger group.
Great Family Vacation
This was our first time renting this Northern Michigan Vacation home for a family gathering. There were 4 couples (2 grandparents, 3 adult children with spouses and 5 grandchildren). A fabulous time was had by all. The sleeping accommodations were fine with room for all. The house was full of games for adults and teens(pool, foosball, ping-pong, air hockey) as well as games and toys for all ages. There were plenty of water toys (2 kayaks, paddle-board, sunfish, wake-board, knee-board, fishing equipment). The beach area is limited, but the sandy knee-high water all the way to the end of the dock was great for the little ones. The lake was pleasantly warm with good fishing right in front of the house for bass and perch. There was minimal traffic on the lake so our rented pontoon boat had no problems with tubing and wake boarding.
This kitchen is fully equipped to feed an army. There is a large refrigerator/freezer but could benefit from an additional fridge for beverages when a large group is there (need to bring cooler & continue filling with ice. Wifi is present and pretty much reliable but lacks capacity for streaming (ROKU). TV is large screen but lacks HDTV capacity so it might be a stretch to keep kids/teens entertained if weather not cooperative.
Overall, a highly enjoyable experience, but could be absolutely perfect with a few small improvements.
Great Lake House!
We had a group of 7 couples stay for a long weekend of wine tasting and relaxing and the cottage worked out great! We enjoyed the large kitchen for cooking and the lower level with the game tables and TV. Close to everything on Leelanau Penninsula and owner had very good recommendations for dinners. Loved the hike to Lake Michigan! The lake the house is on was beautiful but hot tub was perfect, as it was a little chilly. Only drawback was the bunk beds are a little tough for adults, but overall, worked out. Owner was very responsive. Would definitely recommend for a getaway spot.
A great time at a well-appointed home in a great location!
Three generations of ten family members gathered for a week together and had a wonderful time. Kerry was responsive when we had a few questions, and we had a blast using the sunfish and kayaks (and renting double kayaks and having them delivered was no problem either). The downstairs game/TV room was brilliant for a rainy day, and it was just a walk down to the dock for Little Traverse Lake, or a mile on an easy trail to Lake Michigan. Sleeping Bear Dunes was barely ten minutes away, Glen Arbor was as well, and Traverse City only half an hour (when we discovered we needed a late-night urgent care). Great location to do the Leelenau wine circuit. Bedrooms on three levels mean that a level of privacy can be achieved. Only drawback is that the back that the boardwalk runs through is swamp, so if you're looking for a lot of room for kids to be able to run around and play, that's not here - but they'll love the lake so much they won't care, trust me.
Beautiful lake and home
My family of 16 (10 adults and 6 children) spent the week in this beautiful home. When we arrived, the house was immaculate and ready for our stay. The house is situated on a beautiful lake with a shallow area perfect for swimming or wading in the water near the dock. We rented a pontoon boat for the week to water ski and tube with the kids and adults. We pretty much had the lake to ourselves, due to very few boaters on the water. The house also has a hot tub off the rear deck of the house which was enjoyed by all of us at the end of the day. The temp of hot tub was somewhat cool at the beginning of the week, but the pool company fixed it on Tuesday during their weekly cleaning. The house is very close to neighboring towns, wineries, shopping, restaurants, and the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes. Lots to do if you want to get away from the house or get off the lake for a day or a few hours.
The owner, Kerry Baker, was there for us throughout the whole booking process, sending additional pictures of the house, answering questions, and welcoming us to their home by text when we arrived.
The only recommendation or concern I had about the house was the wooden dock leading out to the lake. We had two elderly parents that could have benefited with a hand rail or extra step at the end due to the large step down to the ground. Also, the area off the water to the land is very muddy, no sand, so fire pit was not in the best area to use. All in all though, it was a fabulous relaxing vacation for a large family that has a variety of interests! Highly recommend this house and area of Michigan!
Special Place on Little Traverse Lake
This was our family's third vacation rental in Leelanau and this home was the best by far. From the moment we arrived, it was clear we picked a special place.
Sleeping Bear cottage has everything a family could want for a great vacation. There was something for everyone to do. The kids loved the game/ TV room. The adults spent every evening on the deck relaxing and watching the kids splash off the end of the dock. The kitchen was a great place to prepare meals in and we loved the screen room for morning coffee.
Little Traverse Lake was clear and warm as usual and the view is serene. It was a quick drive to our favorite spots in Leland and Glen Arbor. I could go on and on about this home and the memories we made here. Scott & Kerry were wonderful to work with and we are looking forward to next Summer.
Thanks from the Green family
