Welcome to Sleeping Bear Cottage! Our cottage is located directly on Little Traverse Lake in the heart of Sleeping Bear National Shoreline.....VOTED MOST BEAUTIFUL PLACE IN AMERICA in 2011 by Good Morning America!!
Just across our scenic road you can hike or cross- country ski the trails to Good Harbor Bay on beautiful Lake Michigan. Built in 2005, the cottage is perfect for large family gatherings, or two-family vacations. It is a well appointed cottage located on Little Traverse Lake with private 110' shallow sandy waterfront with dock. (Our waterfront description varies from year-to-year but for the last 10 years we have NOT had a BEACH. Sorry. The water level of our lake has risen and covered our beach. Please contact owner for up-to-date information on the waterfront.) There are 6 bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms!
There are two master suites each with their own private bathroom. One is located on the main floor and has a king-size bed and private balcony overlooking the lake. The other master suite is located on the second floor and has a queen-size bed. This bedroom also faces the lake and has an adorable window seat where you can curl up and read a good book.
Other bedrooms on the second floor:
1. bunk room with two bunk beds (4 twins in total)--sleeps 4. Overlooks front yard and woods/road
2. bunk room with lake views: 1 bunk bed with twin bed on top and a double bed on bottom--sleeps 3.
3. bedroom with a full-size bed and window seat overlooking the lake.
These three bedrooms just mentioned share a hallway bathroom. We also provide a crib if you are traveling with an infant. Bring your own crib sheets.
We also have a large mudroom/laundry room with washer and dryer for your use. A 1/2 bathroom is located here. All bathrooms come with hand soap, toilet paper, and tissue. Showers come with shampoo, conditioner and bath wash.
The lower level walkout has a private bedroom with a king-sized bed. Also in the lower level: full bathroom, game room, and the media room is furnished with a 65 inch TV! Kids love the lower level with the ping-pong table, pool table, air hockey, giant TV,and foosball table. The wall of windows and sliding glass door gives a great view of the lake.
In the summer, take your morning coffee out to the screened porch to enjoy the sunrise over the lake. Or relax in the hot tub. Bring your inland lake motor boat, fishing boat, kayak, canoe, sailboat, mountain bike, road bike, X-C skis, for a vacation you will remember forever.
Your rental will include use of our two kayaks. Please remember to wear a life jacket. You may also use our Sunfish Sailboat if you are an experienced sailor. New for 2013: A Stand Up Paddle Board! Rental also includes Michigan sales tax, linens, towels, wifi and end-of-stay cleaning*.

*$250 end-of-stay cleaning ONLY included in 3 night (or more) rental.
Scott has been traveling to Leelanau Peninsula since he was a boy. He has always felt that the area has magical qualities. Both Scott and Kerry enjoy hiking the trails and biking the roads. They are constantly in awe of the scenery and views. They enjoy the secluded lakes, beaches, and dunes. They are inspired by the endless possibilities for fun and enjoyment in this area. When their children were small, they purchased vacant land on Little Traverse Lake hoping to someday build their dream cottage. This became a reality in 2005. They hope you also find the magic.....
Little Traverse Lake is right in the middle of the Sleeping Bear National Shoreline. Our cottage is located on the north side of the lake with the National Shoreline of Lake Michigan across the street...a short hike away. Our cottage is located halfway between the resort towns of Leland and Glen Arbor. We ride our bikes into either town to the coffee shop or bakery. Across the lake (on M22) there is a small store which stocks basic grocery needs and a local farm market. We hope someday that Sugar Loaf Mountain ski resort will open again. It is located right across the lake from us. Right now, it makes a great hike with unbelievable views of the majestic Lake Michigan, Lime Lake, and Little Traverse Lake. For downhill skiing, we travel to Crystal Mountain in Thompsonville (40 miles) or The Homestead Resort (7 miles).
We had a group of 7 couples stay for a long weekend of wine tasting and relaxing and the cottage worked out great! We enjoyed the large kitchen for cooking and the lower level with the game tables and TV. Close to everything on Leelanau Penninsula and owner had very good recommendations for dinners. Loved the hike to Lake Michigan! The lake the house is on was beautiful but hot tub was perfect, as it was a little chilly. Only drawback was the bunk beds are a little tough for adults, but overall, worked out. Owner was very responsive. Would definitely recommend for a getaway spot.
Three generations of ten family members gathered for a week together and had a wonderful time. Kerry was responsive when we had a few questions, and we had a blast using the sunfish and kayaks (and renting double kayaks and having them delivered was no problem either). The downstairs game/TV room was brilliant for a rainy day, and it was just a walk down to the dock for Little Traverse Lake, or a mile on an easy trail to Lake Michigan. Sleeping Bear Dunes was barely ten minutes away, Glen Arbor was as well, and Traverse City only half an hour (when we discovered we needed a late-night urgent care). Great location to do the Leelenau wine circuit. Bedrooms on three levels mean that a level of privacy can be achieved. Only drawback is that the back that the boardwalk runs through is swamp, so if you're looking for a lot of room for kids to be able to run around and play, that's not here - but they'll love the lake so much they won't care, trust me.
My family of 16 (10 adults and 6 children) spent the week in this beautiful home. When we arrived, the house was immaculate and ready for our stay. The house is situated on a beautiful lake with a shallow area perfect for swimming or wading in the water near the dock. We rented a pontoon boat for the week to water ski and tube with the kids and adults. We pretty much had the lake to ourselves, due to very few boaters on the water. The house also has a hot tub off the rear deck of the house which was enjoyed by all of us at the end of the day. The temp of hot tub was somewhat cool at the beginning of the week, but the pool company fixed it on Tuesday during their weekly cleaning. The house is very close to neighboring towns, wineries, shopping, restaurants, and the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes. Lots to do if you want to get away from the house or get off the lake for a day or a few hours.
The owner, Kerry Baker, was there for us throughout the whole booking process, sending additional pictures of the house, answering questions, and welcoming us to their home by text when we arrived.
The only recommendation or concern I had about the house was the wooden dock leading out to the lake. We had two elderly parents that could have benefited with a hand rail or extra step at the end due to the large step down to the ground. Also, the area off the water to the land is very muddy, no sand, so fire pit was not in the best area to use. All in all though, it was a fabulous relaxing vacation for a large family that has a variety of interests! Highly recommend this house and area of Michigan!
This was our family's third vacation rental in Leelanau and this home was the best by far. From the moment we arrived, it was clear we picked a special place.
Sleeping Bear cottage has everything a family could want for a great vacation. There was something for everyone to do. The kids loved the game/ TV room. The adults spent every evening on the deck relaxing and watching the kids splash off the end of the dock. The kitchen was a great place to prepare meals in and we loved the screen room for morning coffee.
Little Traverse Lake was clear and warm as usual and the view is serene. It was a quick drive to our favorite spots in Leland and Glen Arbor. I could go on and on about this home and the memories we made here. Scott & Kerry were wonderful to work with and we are looking forward to next Summer.
Thanks from the Green family
I have several friends who get together every year or two since grad school. We are all around 40, some with kids, others single or recently married. We all stayed at this cottage and had a wonderful time. We have stayed in New York City, North Carolina's outer banks, Vermont, and two places further south on Lake Michigan (near Saugatuck.) However, everyone agreed that this place was the best we had ever rented!
We usually stay right on a big body of water, but it was really great to have a large in-land lake, as Lake Michigan was so cold this year. It is a short drive to multiple beaches (and of course the dunes!), but this summer it was too cold to swim in Lake Michigan. So, having the sandy bottomed inland lake was great. We also took advantage of the kayaks, paddle-board and sunfish, along with the indoor games of pool, ping-pong & Foosball.
The house was in immaculate condition. Many of my friends commented that they thought that the house was too nice to rent out! There are beautiful hardwood floors, nice furniture, actual artwork, and a large custom kitchen that was well stocked with everything needed to cook large meals.
Overall, we had a wonderful time and we would definitely rent this cottage again.
We rented this home for a family vacation. Our four kids, their spouses, five grandchildren, ages 3 months to 8 years as well as my husband and I had a wonderful time. I can't say enough about the condition of the home, it's beautiful. We had plenty of room and everything you could possibly need is there. The activities in the area are numerous. Golfing, wine tours, sand dunes, casino, lighthouses and fishing. If you want a quiet serene setting yet close enough to Traverse City activities(about a 20/25 minute drive) this is the place for your vacation. While we were there the water level was high so the beach frontage was small. However, the lake is very sandy, water is crystal clear and the kids could walk all the way out to the end of a long dock in the water. They loved it and not having much beach was just fine. The activity on the lake was minimal while we were there. The only downfall that I can possibly think of was the yard is not conducive to playing in for kids. That being said it was just fine for our group because even on the days we planned to just hang out at the house between the games in the house and the lake the kids had plenty to do. It's the perfect location if you want to do all different kinds of activities. If you like touristy places, you're close enough to all sorts of activities. If you like nature and peace and quiet, you're right in the middle of it! It's perfect for every age group and groups with varied interests, there truly is something for everyone within a 30 minute drive at the most!
