Overview

About the property

5 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, sleeps 10, in the heart of the Dordogne, Aquitaine

This country house/villa in the heart of the Dordogne, near Sarlat, is spacious, modern and equipped to a very high standard. Both house and heated swimming pool enjoy a southerly aspect with a panoramic view of the valley. The large kitchen is well equipped to a very high standard. All five bedrooms have private en suites. The ground floor has the benefit of under floor heating; the large stone fireplace adds a focus of warmth in the cooler months. The elegant separate dining room, too, looks out onto the unspoiled countryside. The private and heated pool can be enjoyed in all seasons, with a BBQ for variety. Satellite television and high speed internet access are provided. There is a game room with table tennis. The nearby villages of Marquay and Tamnies offer restaurants and shops. The house, which offers seclusion and tranquillity, is perfectly located for visiting all the attractions that the Dordogne region has to offer for a luxury, extra special, romantic or family holiday.

Combe-Claire: Combe-Claire is a traditionally stone-built, country house/villa that offers all the modern conveniences to make your holiday comfortable and enjoyable. In spring the fruit trees blossom on the slopes surrounding the house. The deer pass by in the valley and wild boar occasionally forage in the local woods. In autumn the early morning mist gives way to warm sunshine that ripens the figs and walnuts. In the immediate surroundings it is easy to find an astonishing variety of wild mushrooms. Here is truly a place to relax, contemplate and unwind, yet it is superbly located so that all the region’s attractions can be visited with ease.

The Dordogne: The Dordogne or Périgord region is one of the most beautiful parts of France, well known to the French for its food and wine. There is a saying, “En Périgord, on mange bien, on boit bien”. Périgord is the home of the truffle and foie gras. Numerous local restaurants, with all regional delights, tempt the casual visitor. As a world centre of prehistory, the Dordogne offers countless caves for exploration. The world-renowned Lascaux and Font de Gaume, with their cave paintings and artefact's, are both close by. The national museum of prehistory, only 15 minutes away in Les Eyzies, provides a good starting point. Entrance is free on the first Sunday of every month. Within easy range, too, are chateaux and bastides – medieval fortified towns – which mark turning points of history, from Viking and English domination, to the resistance of the French Protestants. Across this region Simon de Montfort drove the Cathar heretics virtually to extinction at the foot of the Pyrenees.

Sarlat: Sarlat is one of the most fascinating and beautifully restored towns not only in the Dordogne, but in France. The atmosphere and appearance are of another age, with narrow, steep, beautiful alleys flanked by medieval and renaissance houses in honey-coloured stone. It has more historic listed buildings than any other place of its size in France and is the only town to be given three stars by the Michelin guide solely for the quality and character of its old town. One of the largest weekly markets in France takes over most of the town every Saturday. There is also a Food Market in Sarlat every Wednesday. Throughout the summer there are musical festivals and art exhibitions in Sarlat and nearby towns. In the nocturnal markets there are bargains to be sought among the local crafts, food produce and Bergerac wines by the light of gas-illuminated street lamps. Sarlat is only 15-20 minutes drive away from Combe-Claire. A visit to Tourist Information Office in Sarlat is highly recommended.

Notes:
This superb large house/villa has been designed by the renowned architect, Francois Coq. The style has been inspired by the Chartreuse (Carthusian monastery) with all the beauty of a Perigordine stone house and the modern facilities for maximum comfort. The entrance hall leads to a very large salon (over 67sq m) which enjoys the fantastic panoramic view of the valley, there are large doors leading to the outside terrace. The house has many features such as stone flooring, beautiful oak beams and a large stone open fire place. A separate dinning room has also marvellous views and doors that lead to the terrace. The principle bedroom is located on the ground floor. A mezzanine on the first floor also leads to a large balcony. The house is full of light and is beautifully decorated throughout. The 13m x 5m, heated non-chlorine swimming pool has a delightful waterfall. The pool's specifically designed Roman steps and soft padded lining are ideal for young children.

Exceptional property in beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

We have rented several villas across Europe for family vacations and this is one of our very favourites. The house is beautiful and of very high quality, the location is private and in the middle of glorious countryside, with rolling hills and big skies all around, the pool is heated and a delight, and the owner, Farah, is extremely responsive and proactive with advice, help and support on all matters. Close to Sarlat and its markets is also a real plus. AC in all bedrooms, all of which also have ensuite bathrooms. The kitchen is very well provisioned, with a BBQ grill also for enjoyment, Our boys also enjoyed playing table tennis on the table in the garage. Overall a superb stay...we may be back and would recommend without reservation.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write this review soon after your departure. I am sure our future guests will find your comments very helpful. It was a pleasure to have you as our guests and we hope to welcome you all back before too long. The housekeeper, also, wants me to pass on her thanks for being such wonderful guests and leaving the place in such good order.

A home from home

  • 5 of 5

Combe-Claire is a home from home set in beautiful countryside. We have been staying in French villas and holiday homes, from the Loire to Cote d’Azur, for the last 10 years and this was without doubt the best we have experienced. We had a fantastic family holiday with 4 adults and 5 children all comfortably accommodated. The WiFi worked perfectly which is a great improvement on most places we have visited and is becoming an essential as the children get older.

The layout reflected the amount of thought which has gone into making this the perfect place for a relaxing holiday. We live in a bespoke built house, however we learnt numerous new tricks should we ever build another.

Food is an important part of being in France so we enjoyed using both the high quality barbeque and the kitchen which had every thing we would be using at home; we never had to work around .

Pool was well tended and the children loved the fountain, with a 3 year old in the party we thought the solid electric cover was a great improvement over alarms or fences.

We liked the relative isolation, however there were a couple of towns within 15/20 minutes drive and the restaurant in the next village was excellent. In a week we visited about a third of the places we had noted for exploration. The region has plenty to occupy all ages from the Grotto to High Wires and more restaurants than you could ever visit whilst there was always the option of staying at ‘home’ to relax in luxury.

The only issue we had the whole time was due to the weather, the first evening the sun was still very hot and we noticed a lack of sun canopies by the outside table compared to the number of bases. We contacted Farah by email, she responded immediately, and the next morning she turned up with two large boxes containing very high quality, and large, canopies.

We would thoroughly recommend Combe-Claire for a large family but it would be the perfect getaway as a couple.

Exceptional quality and tranquility in countryside

  • 5 of 5

We arrived from a week in the Charente to a lovely warm welcome from host, Farah, who made us immediately at home in her stylish, contemporary, yet traditional house in this secluded part of the Dordogne.

With first class suites (5 doubles/twins) and facilities (air con, heated pool, games room, bikes and a lovely kitchen to cater in-house), yet less than a mile from the superb Hotel Laborderie with its extremely reasonable restaurant (€29 for a three course menu du terroir which we succumbed to twice in a week)!

Farah kindly booked other events/dining and gave us the best tips for the area. We loved the lake (Étang de Tamniés) at the bottom of the village where, even in late September, there were complimentary changing rooms and showers and a chance for tame water swimming!

There were seven of us, two couples and 3 singles and we had the most fabulous time, mainly thanks to the stylish design and location of the property and Farah's light touch in steering us to the best places to visit.

We enjoyed Lascaux (20,000 year old cave paintings), the pretty riverside village St. Leon sur Vezere (a 20 minute car journey / one hours bike ride), Marquay across the valley for the daily morning croissants (don't be late), Sarlat on market day (Wednesday), La Roque-Gageac on the Dordogne (with a gabarre trip down the river) and even Rocamadour (1 hour 20 minutes but well worth it).

Highly recommended, have a chat with Farah before you go to see if it meets your requirements, it did ours, perfectly!

Superbe villa

  • 5 of 5

A bientôt.

70th Birthday Party

  • 5 of 5

Combe-Claire is perfect. Well equipped - lacked for nothing - immaculate throughout. We received a warm welcome from the housekeeper who explained everything to us.

Set in rolling countryside away from other properties but within close proximity to famous beauty spots.

The pool was large and well maintained - the table tennis room a bonus.

We enjoyed a memorable family holiday, making full use of the pool during the day and table tennis tournaments during the evening - not everyone was enthusiastic about the table tennis. Had wonderful BBQs on the terrace, washed down by wine, whilst looking out over the beautiful countryside. The local hotel was very good but it was more relaxing at 'home'. Evenings to remember. Especially my birthday party (do you celebrate turning 70). A night drinking champagne, surprise birthday cake and an impromptu entertainment from the 'girls'.

Visited the nearby lake - the grandchildren loved the inflatables - Sarlat is a must to visit and and La-Roque-Gageac truly amazing. Enjoyed delicious meals in both

towns.

A truly memorable holiday, spent with the family.

We would definitely recommend this property to our friends.

Beautiful, our second visit in 6 years

  • 5 of 5

The property was exactly as we remembered it after a visit a little under 6 years ago, when there were only 8 of us, the number has increased to 12 but still ample room for everyone. Beautiful decor and soft furnishings throughout. There is nothing in the kitchen that you will not be able to find. Farah is a wonderful host so freindly and warm, she answered every question promptly. This time we also met Rosemary the housekeeper as when we arrived the fridge door was not closing and she was waiting for it to be sorted. All sorted in a matter of minutes. A clean mid stay by the housekeeping team we had forgotten about but what a lovely surprise. Every amenity in the bathroom taken care of. Toilet rolls, toilet cleaner, bath cleaner, no need to bring anything with you except your toiletries. The same in the kitchen. Beautiful soft smelling towels and pristine tea towels. Would definitely recommend to all

The house is on one of three hilltop villages within sight (and a short drive) of each other. The beautiful village of Tamnies captivates the visitor with deer, flower displays and an excellent restaurant. Its illuminated church tower is a landmark at night. Marquay, with fresh bread daily, offers several excellent restaurants. The house, Combe-Claire, is perched atop Escamps, a hamlet of just a few houses, free from intrusion and visitor activity. An enjoyable 15 minute drive to the south lies the medieval town of Sarlat; a similar distance to the west is Les Eyzies, the ‘capital of prehistory’, while to the north are the celebrated caves of Lascaux, where images of bison and deer, perhaps ancestors of the herd that still haunt the nearby fields, are to be seen.

Other Activities: canoeing, hot air ballooning, adventure parks, many historic sites
