Illyria - a beautiful fisherman's cottage just 3 meters from sea

Bedrooms 3
Space 1,291 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 1 - 7 nights

About the property

3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, sleeps 6-8 people

Illyria is a very old Dalmation fisherman's cottage that has been restored to a very high standard whilst retaining the authenticity of the property. Locally quarried Brac stone is used throughout to give the property a cool and serene feel. The property is set over 3 floors with 2 of the three bedrooms enjoying breathtaking and uninterrupted views across the Adriatic Sea. The property comes with 2 bathrooms both equipped with power showers. Illyria is fully air conditioned throughout and satellite TV is available.

The property has a large terrace with BBQ - you can fish from the terrace and then pop your catch right on your own fire. There is a mooring post . situated in front of the property making it suitable for those with a boat or small yacht. Illyria is within a short walk of the local amenities including the many fine restaurants and pubs of Postira. Guests may use the gym, spa (incl. manicurist) and sauna/solarium/internet facilities of a nearby hotel for a small charge.

The island of Brac is only a 45 min ferry journey from Split which is directly served by an international airport. In the summer months, ferry departures from Split are very frequent i.e. every hour approx. Flights to Zadar (one and half hours drive from Split) and Dubrovnik (3 hours drive from Split) would also be suitable.

Illyria was recently featured in the U.K. Channel 4 programme "Homes by the Med" -, enter code "med13" scroll to 12m35s and enjoy the coverage.

We are associated with an excellent local tour operator, Gecko tours, based in Split. Gecko tours are able to arrange a private pick up from Split airport (or Zadar airport) and drop off at the port-side at Split - they can also pre-buy your ferry tickets to save you the hassle. We have also negotiated a discount off all local tours (bespoke or advertised) provided by Gecko tours for Illyria guests - well worth considering during your stay at Illyria. Gecko tours can also arrange a private 12 seat speedboat transfer from a jetty just 800m from the airport entrance directly to Postira harbour (only 400m from our house) which is a very exciting and quick, rather James Bond, way of arriving. Please just let us know if you're interested and we'll arrange the rest.

Having successfully rented our property on Brac for a number of years we have taken the plunge and bought another prime property, nestled in the heart of Diocletian's palace in Split(see listing 1300888).This 120 metre, luxury, 1st floor apartment with its own private terrace (a rarity in Diocletian's palace) is simply stunning. It was recently fully renovated and is now available for rental. If a two-stop holiday is something you are interested in i.e. min 3 days in bustling Split city and it's great restaurants and shops coupled with a min 4 day stay on the island (only 40 mins away) with its great swimming and pure relaxation please let us know ...

About Steven Robinson

We are a British family who first fell in love with the beauty of Croatia in 2004. We bought this ruin of a fisherman's cottage because of its wonderful location right on the Adriatic sea. It has been a wonderful holiday destination for our family as well as the countless visitors we've hosted each year.

Why Steven Robinson chose Brac

This property really does offer visitors the best a seaside holiday has to offer. It's perfectly located right on the water's edge. The Adriatic is wonderful for swimming with water temperatures at about 24 - 28 degrees Celsius in peak season. The cottage is located in a working fishing village environment where most inhabitants live directly from the land or sea

What makes this cottage unique

We are now able to offer guests a two stop holiday experience, with a fisherman's cottage on Brac and a luxurious inner city apartment ( sleeping ) in the heart of the roman Diocletian's palace in Split, see property no. 1300888. Also, we are in the process of partnering with the best and largest Split based excursion company for 2016 which runs a variety of professional tours in Dalmatia to suit all tastes. We will shortly post details of this but guests of Illyria will receive a 20% discount of the listed price of all tours.

Special location in a cute little town

  • 4 of 5

We weren't sure what to expect from this home, but we ended up being pleasantly surprised by its amazing location, and the quaintness of this lovely little town.

Illyria is all about the fabulous back terrace that is insanely close to the sea. It's an iron-shore rocky area, so no sand, but it was so easy to jump into the ocean to cool off. We bought some inflatable rafts and just floated the day away, and enjoyed watching the boats and other people passing by. The interior of the home was simple, nothing too fancy but casual and had all of the things we needed. The town was surprisingly busy on a Saturday night, and we felt safe letting the kids run around and explore a bit while we relaxed with a drink at the local restaurants, of which there are several to choose from. The small market was close by, under 200 paces, and the town just a short walk away. We didn't really do a lot except chill out here, and it was a wonderful place for just that.

Make sure you get to the car ferry in Makarska early if you plan to come from that direction. We were there probably 1.5 hours before the scheduled time and still didn't get on during the busy summertime rush.

The property lived up to our expectations

  • 5 of 5

The property lived up to our expectations. We enjoyed snorkelling from the terrace and we saw plenty of sea life. Ivan was really helpful and recommended many places to visit I recommend Vidova Gora and Blaca

If you hire a car.

Konoba Kaktus is a great traditional restaurant just a short walk away from Illyria and the Lamb on Wednesdays was amazing.

Delivered on all expectations - superb

  • 5 of 5

We are three generations ranging in age from 51 to 9. Illyria caters for everyone. Not only is it in the perfect location, close to two supermarkets, a butcher and several restaurants as well as having the Mediterranean Sea on the doorstep (completely safe to bathe in there and then), the owners have provided entertainment by way of toys and games and a huge selection of film DVD's for rainy days. Not that we had any! There is a gorgeous sandy beach that can be reached by a lovely sedate walk (circa 50 mins) or as we did 15 mins by hiring bikes, which has a bar and restaurant. The restaurant grows many of its own ingredients right next to it and all food is cooked to order. It was fabulous. The island of Brac is beautiful. We arrived by private boat transfer which was stress freely arranged via the owners of Illyria. It's a bit extra to pay than the ferry but well worth it. Illyria is such a relaxing cottage to stay in and had everything we needed. I highly recommend to anyone planning to come to Croatia, take a few days out on the island of Brac, and stay at Illyria. You will not be disappointed! Xxx

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for taking the time to leave this lovely review of Illyria Sarah and Im so glad you all enjoyed your stay. As you say, you did arrive in some style by private speedboat (no other way in my opinion😀😀😀) and I'm glad that was enjoyable too. It's back to the gales of the UK summer I'm afraid but I'm so pleased Brac will be such a fond memory for you all. All the best. Steven

Amazing Location on a Stunning Island

  • 4 of 5

Our arrival was made simple by the attention and thought Steven had put into the reception of his guests. If you feel any anxiety about travelling to this cottage, don't.

The staff Steven had in place for reception were delightful. If you have any questions about places to visit, either on Brac or in Split, they willingly give you their time and knowledge. Following reception they remain descretly contactable.

The cottage is very well appointed with everything you need for a truly stress free stay.

Unfortunately the meteorological phenomenon known as the Bora visited us - a strong, chill wind originating from mainland Eastern Europe - and rendered the terrace facing the sea unusable however we retreated to the front patio which was a proper little sun trap where our travel BBQ was well used to grill our fresh fish. It is also fair to say that the property was allowed to breath quite freely making evenings in somewhat of a huddle. If visiting early season I would certainly advise packing your favourite slippers.

The town is spectacular and the church deserves special mention for its beauty. The harbour front is a perfect place to relax at anytime of the day or night. The walks along the coast in either direction are a must thing to do. But, top of our strolls was to the neighbouring town of Dol. The town is a living museum!

We can't fault the people involved in making our visit stress free. They all get Five stars from us. The weather took a little shine from our experience but this is the chance to take out of season.

Owner's Response: thanks Paul - yes, unfortunately the weather was particularly bad when you visited which is not usual but also not unheard of in mid-April. Still, I'm glad you enjoyed yourself despite being unable to use the very special sea facing terrace - the house has both mobile radiators and reversible AC so hopefully you were not cold even if the tan was put on hold!! Perfect retreat

  • 5 of 5

We could not have been more pleased with our stay at Illyria! The house had absolutely everything we needed, and was ideally located for us. We went swimming most days from the back porch, and every morning enjoyed coffee in the neighborhood cafes. Several times we walked to spend the day at Lovrečina, or exploring around Postira. It was very easy to rent bikes, scooters, or cars when we wanted to explore outside the immediate area, and by renting a car on Brač we got discounts on all ferries to and from the island. The house has all of the amenities we could have hoped for, and we were well set up to cook at home several nights, plus with three small groceries with in walking distance, or the larger stores in Supetar, it was easy to find anything we needed for the kitchen. We explored several of the restaurants in Postira as well and we never dissatisfied. I would go back there again any time! Thanks so much Steven for a great stay!

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for taking the time to review Caroline - it's really appreciated. Yours was quite a long stay of 3 weeks so it's all the more appreciated really, in that you were able to fully immerse yourself into Postira life !! Thanks also for allowing the film crew to take a look around during your stay - the property will shortly be shown on "Home in the Med" on UK Channel 4 which should be fun!! Regards. Steven

Hidden dream

  • 5 of 5

What you see is what you get, plus!!!! We recently stayed here for four days and had trouble leaving. The views are breathtaking, the island is beautiful and very easy to be adventurous either by foot or car. The house is well suited for 6, although we were a party of four . It is tastefully decorated. The outside patio is lovely for your morning coffee to a glass of wine in the evening. You can swim off the rocks at the back patio. Grocery and restaurants are within walking distance. Definitely go and eat Peka in Dol. We rented bikes and fell in love with a local beach down the street with sparkling waters, a beach bar and because of the time of year , not crowded. Ivan the manager stayed in touch to help answer any questions. We just loved it !

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for the kind review Andrea and so glad you had a great time on Brac. I think late September (and May) are great times to travel to Brac - most things are open and the tourists numbers are limited. In fact, on Thursday this week, UK C4 is profiling our property in Postira (and me - more worryingly!!) on the long running programme " Homes in the Med" ... so, Illyria should be become famous but will hopefully remain "hidden". Regards

The property is situated in Postira, Island of Brac - a beautiful and unspoilt fishing village on the Island of Brac. The Island of Brac is just a 45 min ferry boat journey from Split centre - ferries/car ferries are frequent in summer, approx every hour.

The village of Postira enjoys 5+restaurants and a number of bars all of which thrive in the summer months though are never loud or noisy. Fresh caught fish can be bought from the fishing boats in the morning.

Postira is a good base from which to explore the rest of Brac and the other Dalmatian Islands. Brac enjoys many secluded beaches including the beautiful sandy beach of Lovrecina, just over 2km from IIlyria.
