About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-3)

E komo mai to The Cottage at Hale Makai - our piece of island paradise in Kailua. Lying alongside a fabulous three-mile stretch of protected beach, Kailua is a small town on the windward side of Oahu. Kailua Beach is routinely voted one of the best beaches in the world and, with no hotels in town, only local residents and visitors who rent vacation homes get to enjoy our island lifestyle. You will love this kama'aina (local) way to enjoy Hawaii.

You couldn't ask for a more perfect location! Set up for couples or small families, our one-bedroom, one-bath detached cottage is just steps from Kailua Beach. Pick up your cappuccino at the Kalapawai Market every morning and your shave ice (snow cone) at Island Snow every afternoon. Your family will love this Kama'aina (local) way to enjoy Hawaii.

Kailua town, with its restaurants, shopping, and entertainment is a little more than 1/2 mile away. And, in just a short car ride, you can swim with the dolphins at Sea Life Park, snorkel in Hanauma Bay, hike the stunning Ko'olau mountains, swim/surf the North Shore, browse the 'Swap Meet' at the Aloha Stadium, sample Honolulu's nightlife, walk Waikiki Beach, or get to the airport.

Kick back. Our cottage has been furnished in island style to make your stay relaxing and enjoyable. You will feel right at home while you barbecue dinner on the lanai, wander to and from the beach, watch movies or cable TV, or drift off to sleep in the comfortable bed. We also have wireless internet access so you can stay connected!

The detached one-bedroom, one-bath cottage has a queen-size bed in a separate bedroom and queen-size sofa bed in the living room (sleeps two adults plus small child comfortably), kitchen/eating area, and covered patio with a Weber gas grill and outdoor furniture. Includes access to all the beach toys - boogie boards, sand toys, beach chairs/mats/towels and cooler and an initial supply of paper and soap products.

Located on a large lot with a separate, three-bedroom, two-bath detached house (VRBO #55006), the cottage is available to rent separately or together with the house for larger groups.

About The Owner

My husband and I have had this property for about 25 years. Since my husband's family had lived in Kailua for many years during their high school years and had many fond memories of the island, we wanted to be able to bring our own family back to Kailua and create our own family memories. About 8 years ago, we decided to open our home to other vacationing families who have been able to enjoy many happy days as a family here. We hope that you find our place as comfortable for your family as we do for ours!

The Owner purchased this cottage in 1990

Why The Owner chose Kailua

Location!!

What makes this cottage unique

Being located a short walk from Kailua Beach means that you can go back and forth to the beach all day without loading and unloading everything into and out of the car. I love being able to pick up my latte at the Kalapawai Market before my beach stroll, and we have a family ritual of shave ice every afternoon from Island Snow (President Obama's favorite before-dinner snack with his kids!)

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a blast in Kailua especially staying at the cottage! Thank you soo very much for everything! The cottage had everything that we needed. It's a home away from home! We'll probably return there sometime soon hopefully. We'll always keep your place in mind!

Owner's Response: I sent an email to the guest to ask for specifics regarding her comment about "needs updating" but have heard no reply. We try to be VERY conscientious about providing a good guest experience and I routinely ask guests after their visit for their suggestions regarding improvements and repairs. When I asked the property manager as to whether she knew anything about the guest concerns, she said that there had been a leak under the kitchen sink (repaired the day after the guest reported the problem) and a leaky toilet (repaired immediately after the guest left per the guest's own request). Other than that, not sure what her comments might refer to. We take our guests' comments and reviews seriously, try to address concerns immediately and work hard to provide a quality vacation experience.

A month in Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

We just spent a month in Lisa's cottage and loved it! I grew up in Kailua and know the pro's and cons of being on the Lanikai side of traffic and would rate our experience a 10+ out of 10, as to being on the Lanikai side. If you rent on the Lanikai side of Kailua, there is a very definitive difference in the traffic to deal with daily, or just beyond that, you can go multiple ways into Kailua, Waimanalo, Honolulu or the North Shore. With Lisa's cottage you are within walking distance to all 3 of Kailua's farmers markets and downtown areas as well as Lanikai and Kailua beach, the Kalapawai store and Island Snow. The Cottage is outfitted with everything you would need for a perfect visit, centrally located, quiet and private. It is our intention to book this perfect spot for multiple visits. We met Both Lisa, our host and Debra, the proprety manager and would have nothing but very good things to say. Mahalo, for the great experience and Island aloha! Chris & Ron

Five month stay - another great experience!!

  • 5 of 5

I rented this cottage a few years ago for a vacation and had such a wonderful time. Last year when I had a five month temporary work assignment on Oahu I was able to rent it again from August to December. I brought my youngest child with me and enrolled her in a small private school down the street. We had super time. Lots of swimming, ocean walks, grilling, playing in the big yard, hearing the surf late at night, etc. We got the true Hawaii experience living in this lovely oceanside spot. The center of town is a 10-15 minute walk, deli/coffee/mkt a few doors away, beach around the corner. Lots of parking and privacy. The cottage had everything we needed to live comfortably and it was the perfect turn-key rental for my temporary contract work. Hope to be back again!

LOVED it!

  • 5 of 5

Me, the wife, 2.5y old son and 8m daughter stayed in the cottage and enjoyed it immensely. We had all we needed to make ourselves food and generally at home. My daughter was well catered for with a portable cot and my son had a huge pull out bed for himself. The garden area was nice and big and even thought we shared with the tenants in the main house, our sons became quick friends and played the whole yard full. The easy, quick walk to the beach is perfect for eat, beach, eat, nap, beach, eat, sleep days. The market, two houses away, was adequately stocked for our food needs and the shopping center around the corner had pretty good pizza and damn good shaved ice. All and all we absolutely LOVED it and would highly recommend it. Thank you for a great stay.
