Birch Cottage is set just above the small friendly town of Ambleside surrounded by mountains and at the head of Lake Windermere. 4 minutes walk downhill takes you to pubs, restaurants and even a cinema. Or walk from the door across the hills to other lakes and villages.

The cottage is loved by owner and visitors alike. A traditional terrace set out on 3 floors, it is centrally heated and comfortably furnished throughout. The top floor is made into a huge double room with an extra seating area with view to Wansfell. The middle floor has a cosy twin, also with views and a roomy bathroom with large bath and separate power shower. The ground floor is open plan. Lounge has 2 double leather sofas, living flame gas fire, TV with video player, books, games & information folder. Kitchen area has full size gas cooker, microwave, electric kettle, toaster, iron and a wide range of utensils and crockery.

Outside a private garden with lovely views, table & chairs. Parking for 1 car on private road

About Caroline

I was looking for a pied a terre in my favourite location in the world but fell in love with this beautiful cottage which I couldn't afford. It belonged to a famous local climber Bill Birkett and was already a holiday let so I just took the plunge, thinking that then lots of people would be able to enjoy it and I would be better able to afford it. Win, win!!

Why Caroline chose Ambleside

I just love it - I've made it into a welcoming home from home. And it has a tranquil private enclosed garden from where you can watch the sun rise or fall over Wansfell while you listen to the birds and the waterfall [when in spate] as you sip your morning coffee or a glass or two. Cheers!

What makes this cottage unique

As I holiday here myself when I can the cottage has lots of extra equipment & personal touches which most commercial holiday homes don't have. It is meant to be a real escape from the world.

Just off the Kirkstone Road above Ambleside the tiny hamlet of Edinboro is perfectly located for a peaceful holiday relaxing in the garden or walking high mountains or tranquil valleys with glorious views all around. Relax by the fire or stroll into the small friendly market-town of Ambleside where there are many pubs, cafes, top class restaurants, late night food stores, bakers and local butchers. You can also walk to Lake Windermere to take a cruise or an open top [open in summer only!] bus to other lakes or hire a bike if you are feeling energetic. A different walk could be taken every day for over a week without even getting into the car.

Great location

The cottage is in a great location - just a 5 minute walk to the centre of Ambleside, so it's great for exploring the area. It's a small but homely cottage and we all slept well as the bedrooms are very comfortable and quiet. Some of the kitchen utensils and equipment could do with replacing. The shower was good and we always had plenty of hot water. It was good to be able to park outside the cottage.

Owner's Response: I'm glad you enjoyed the location and slept well. The cottage is always set up with nice clean matching equipment in the kitchen at the start of every season. Sadly these can get a bit worn with use as the season progresses.

charming Ambleside

The beds were comfortable and we slept very well in this quiet house. We liked the gas fireplace on the cooler nights. The location is great - right at the edge of the village, but still an easy walk to the middle of Ambleside. The house could benefit from a deep clean and a few items being replaced - some of the cutlery, pots and pans were dirty and/or rusty, which made us reluctant to use them. The house has real character, and it was convenient to have parking right outside.
