Local Information: The village of Santa Maria di Castellabate is situated on the beautiful and unspoilt Cilento Coastline which in turn lies in the Parco Nazionale del Cilento a natural parkland reserve which stretches along the coast and inland to the hill of Vallo di Diano. Offering a wonderful combination of wide sandy bays, rocky coves, verdant hillside and natural flora and fauna. The many sandy beaches in and around Santa Maria di Castellabate were recently awarded the 'bandiera blu' for their clean seas. The village of Santa Maria runs parallel to the coast and offers a variety of shops, bars and gelaterias, whilst the area boasts a wide selection of good restaurants offering genuine local cuisine.
Santa Maria di Castellabate: The position of the apartment means that it is not necessary to have a car since the central piazza and pedestrian village are just on short stroll away whilst the sea is on your doorstep. The neighbouring village of San Marco with its picturesque port can be reached in a short bus/ car drive or by walking along the beach from Santa Maria. The medieval village of Castellabate now under the patronage of the UNESCO can also be reached in a short bus/car drive and offers stunning views of the coast whilst one can explore its hidden alleyways and marvel at its historic architecture. It is still an inhabited medieval village which has conserved many of its original features and boasts such personalities of Napoleon Bonaparte and Leon Cavallo as past guests.
There are numerous restaurants in the area serving traditional dishes with home-grown produce and local wine.
There is a local Saturday market and various festivals.
Excursion Possibilities: The area offers a variety of choice for excursions to the better known tourist attractions- the historic sites of Pompeii and Paestum, the dramatic cliff-like Amalfi coast with the picturesque towns of Amalfi, Ravello, Positano, Sorrento and the Island of Capri all easily accessible as day excursions. The caves of Pertosa and Castelcivita and Palinuro also offer a fascinating outing, not to mention the local area where stone farmhouses hidden amongst the olive groves and entire villages stand as relics to times gone by.

I travelled with my sons, 11 and 17. We loved Santa Maria. The apartment overlooked a lovely beach. The apartment is spacious (we were only 3, so it was very spacious). Because it is an old building it is very cool inside, so excellent for this time of year (July). After Santa Maria we went on to Amalfi and then Rome and although at the time of being in Santa Maria we found it very good value (food, drink, restaurants, apartment), we appreciated how very good value it was after feeling very ripped off later in the holiday. Also, the quality of food in the restaurants was excellent and good value. I would definitely return to this apartment and to this town. We had a wonderful time.
We 4 Canadian women had the opportunity to rent this apartment and it was wonderful with the one exception, no parking space was available as indicated on the description, and finding parking was a challenge every time.
The apartment is ideally located and all we hoped it would be. Santa Maria Castellabate is ideally located for our day trips to Pasteum, the Amalfi Coast and wandering south. The apartment is also ideally located in Santa Maria and the town and its people are absolutely delightful. If you are looking for the real Italy - this is it. Jacqueline was extremely helpful and easy to contact. We would rent here again if we return to the area.
We travelled to Santa Maria for my son's wedding and the apartment was a perfect base for us - both for its proximity to the wedding venue and the town centre. The apartment was spacious, well equipped, clean and comfortable and the views from the living room and main bedroom were just superb. We absolutely loved Santa Maria - it has a wonderful atmosphere and there are plenty of excellent restaurants and bars. Jacqueline was extremely helpful and she really stepped up to the mark when my son discovered on his journey back to the UK that he had left his passport in the apartment - but that's another story!
This was a perfect location for us, the apartment was spacious and well presented, lovely views and walking distance to everywhere just across to the beach, the restaurant just below was very handy and we loved the pizzas. Plenty of information in the apartment and the owners on hand for information and were very helpful in organising taxis and booking restaurants for us. The village is charming, beaches very nice also some nice beach restaurants around the corner. If you like hiking nice walks along coast but get up early to avoid the heat.
Santa Maria di Castellabate is on the Cilento coast in the undiscovered Parco Nazionale del Cilento - a national parkland area - 50km south of Salerno and the Amalfi coast and was recently awarded the 'Bandiera Blu' Blue flag for clean seas. It is a combination of sandy bays, rocky coves, verdanat hills and inland mountains with many places of historical cultural and artistic interest in the surrounding areas. Castellabate the medieval hilltop village has been declared a national heritage site under the patronage of the UNESCO. Santa Maria offers an ideal location to enjoy nature and the beaches partake of an unspoiled Italian way of life and offer an ideal base from which to visit places of cultural, historic and archaeological interest- Pompei, Paestum, Velia, the Amalfi coast, Capri, Padula Charterhouse, Caserta Palace to mention but a few.
