|Minimum Stay||3 - 7 nights|
The apartment 'Grenier' was the old barn of the farm house. It was remodelled in a apartment with modern style. A contemporary construction in interaction with wood, you enjoy a nice sense of being in an attic.
The apartment does have two sleeping rooms, a bathroom and a spacious living room and is connected with a staircase to the garden.
Welcome to 'Oyan-zain-baita'. The owners Steffen and Susana, a German-Spanish couple, look forward to welcoming you to their renovated and typical farmhouse. The house, which offers 4 lovely and comfortable apartments (apartment etable, grenier, larrun and ganbara), comes from the 18th century.
Our web page is www.maison-oyan.com, there you will find very good information about the house and the marvelous environment.
Since 2014 we manage another holiday apartment. The house Maison Ihi-Toki which belongs to the father of Susana and his wife.
The house Ihi-Toki was built 3 years ago and the holiday apartment is brand new.
The house is located in a peaceful rural location with a nice view of the meadows and foothills to the Pyrenees, at the foot of the mountain 'La Rhune' (900 m), between the idyllic villages of Urrugne and Ascain (5 min.). Close to Atlantic Coast St. Jean de Luz (10 min), Hendaye (15 min), Hondarribia (Spain) (20 min.), Biarritz (20 min.), San Sebastian (España) (30 min.).
The holiday apartment is equipped with a spacious garden with chairs (with grill) for the guests. The house has direct access to a stream to refresh during the summer. Plane-trees, a lime tree and an old oak tree give shade during the summer.
Only 10 min. from our house is the picturesque city of Saint Jean de Luz. The whale fishers went to sea here hundreds of years ago. Now, there is an idyllic harbour, a beach, a lively pedestrian zone and a lot of restaurants. Biarritz (20 minutes) is the more elegant city, a city of the 'belle epoque'.
The beaches from Saint Jean de Luz and Ciboure are the closest ones (10 minutes drive). The wonderfull beach from Hendaye (15 minutes drive) and the beaches from Biarritz arround 25 minutes.
San Sebastián (30 min on the Spanish side), the former summer residence of the king, is the culinary capitol of the area and many consider it to be the most beautiful city in Spain. Other destinations: Bayonne (25 minutes), Bilbao with the Guggenheim museum (1.5 hours), the pilgrimage site Lourdes can be reached in 2.5 hours.
Nearby you will find very idyllic villages with typical Basque houses, Urrugne (10 minutes), Ascain (5 minutes), Ainhoa and Sare (each 20 minutes).
I will list a few examples for children:
An old cog railway on our mountain (10 minutes), the train takes 35 minutes to get to the summit. An adventure park nearby (10 minutes), behind the indoor pool. Another park is only 15 minutes from our house.
The beach of Hendaye (15 minutes) and the lake of St. Pée sur Nivelle invite you to safely swim.
The zoo 'Le parc animalier Etxola' (20 minutes) and the caves of Zugarramurdi, where witches sat earlier, are also popular destinations.
Kayak classes in Hendaye (15 minutes), sailing and surfing classes in Saint Jean de Luz are other options.
Adventure and sports: There are only a few types of sports that can't be done in this region. Due to the close proximity to the sea, the Pyreneese and the mild climate, nature offers us nearly everything.
The sailing schools in Hendaye (15 minutes) offer guided sailing. Jet ski and water scooter in Saint Jean de Luz (10 minutes) rafting and white water rafting (25 min), kayaking in the sea in Saint Jean de Luz and kayaking on a river (5 km). Deep sea fishing with the boat Bateau Nivelle III.
For mountain bikers, hikers and racing cyclists, the possibilities are unlimited! The same for golf players with fabulous golf courses in Saint Jean de Luz and the area of Biarritz.
Susana comes from the nearby San Sebastian and Steffen from Karlsruhe (Germany).
We have 2 children (Tom + Eli) and live since 2007 in this fantastic region.
We also live on the property and are therefore any time available.
Susana Pro/Steffen Heckmann purchased this farmhouse in 2007
The flats of Maison Oyan Zain Baita are very elegant renovated and furnished and offer a lot of place to spend restful holidays.
The region is described in our home-made guide very well and offers between the Atlantic, the Pyrenees, France and Spain nearly everything.
High-class standards (cleanness and equipment of the flats), extremely central situation for beach visits, excursions and wanderings.

This house is set in a beautiful, quiet, family-friendly village, and we loved our time there. The owners were so thoughtful, ensuring that we had everything we needed to enjoy our stay. The apartments are well equipped making it easy to cook meals at home, and access to the sunny yard was ideal for our ten-year-old. The surrounding towns were so lovely, and you can easily drive to many of them within a few kilometres. This made for a great central location for us to explore the region. We would happily return! Thanks for everything!
Superb apartment with some very good design details. The kitchen was well equipped. Steffen and Susanna were very helpful with local information. A great base from which to explore the area, great walks right on the doorstep, the most beautiful scenic coast drive to Hendaye and the local town of St Jean de Luz is charming. Still so much to explore in this beautiful part of the world. We would visit again and stay here.
We were very impressed with Larrun apartment. Everything was sparkling clean and there was so much room to spread out and relax. The apartment contained everything we needed to enjoy a a great five days. We found Steffen and Susana very friendly, helpful and welcoming hosts. It is in easy reach of Bayonne and Biarritz and just a short drive from the lovely St Jean de Luz. We found that nearby Ascain has quite a few good restaurants and there is a boulangerie just 5 minutes drive away. This visit to France we have stayed in 6 different apartments, all very nice, and Larrun is right up there with the best of them. Highly recommended!!
Our stay in the Grenier apartment was wonderful. The apartment was clean, bright and airy and had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Steffan and Susannna were very welcoming and helpful. They were able to give us recommendations on where to go and things to do in the area. Their restaurant recommendations gave us our most memorable meals in the Basque region of France and Spain. Their home is in a picturesque area of small towns with easy access to the beach (which would have been great in the summer), San Sebastian for dining, and the Pyrennes for hiking. We had a great time and would love to go back!
Furthermore, you will find the cities of Bayonne (30 min) and Bilbao (Guggenheim museum) (Spain) (1 h 30 min).
For your purchases, you will find nearby (5 min.): a shopping centre (E.LECLERC) with supermarket, pharmacy and everything you need (time by car).
I will just mention some beaches close to our house, basically we do have maps in our apartments where you can watch out for all beaches in the region.
Beach of Socoa:
The beach of Socoa with a harbor and an old fort protecting the harbor and the city, is worthwhile to visit and enjoy. The web page is www.ciboure.fr. The beach of Socoa is a 10 minutes drive.
Saint Jean de Luz:
The Grand Plage: the nice protected bay of Saint Jean de Luz is very close to the center of the city and the amazing pedestrian area zone with nice shops opened all week long. The beach of Erromardie is at the northern end of town, nice wild Atlantic beach. For the surfers I recommend the beach Lafiténia, nice surfer atmosphere, which is again 1,5 km further north of Erromardie. More information at www.saint-jean-de-luz.com. It is a 10 to 20 minutes drive to the different beaches.
Beach of Hendaye:
The beach of Hendaye is a great beach for family and beginners of surfing, as it does have a very smooth entrance to the sea and the waves are normally not as big. More information at: www.hendaye.com. It is a 15 minutes drive.
The beaches of Biarritz:
This is where surfing started 30 years ago. The beautiful beaches are between 20 and 30 minutes away from our house. More information at www.biarritz.fr
The beach of Hossegor:
The long beach of Hossegor which belongs to the so called Landas is also a good surfer spot. Just 40 Minutes away from our house, direction Bordeaux. The web page is www.hossegor.fr
Saint Jean de Luz:
Ever since the marriage of Louis XIV and the Infanta Maria Teresa took place in the city in 1660, Saint-Jean-de-Luz has been known as a 'royal' city. Once a center for whaling, cod fishing, buccaneers and corsairs, the town is the leading port for the sardine and tuna industry in France. The town started to develop its tourist infrastructure during the 1950s and 1960s, while at the same time managing to preserve its picturesque houses and historic town centre. A popular family seaside resort, Saint-Jean-de-Luz is lively throughout the year, with its thalassotherapy center, shopping streets, busy pavement cafés, classical music and cinema festivals, and its Andalusian festival. The web page is www.saint-jean-de-luz.com. Saint Jean is just a 10 minutes drive.
A prime destination forever branded by the passage of Napoleon III and the Famous, Biarritz has always been one of France’s most welcoming towns. A century ago, thanks to the Empress Eugenie, the little whaling town became a fashionable summer resort that, through the years, has stayed open to the outside world without losing its identity.
Today, Biarritz is undoubtedly the only town where you can see neoprene-clad surfers with their boards under their arms crossing paths with business men in suits and ties carrying towels. A funny image, yet so common. Open and cosmopolitan, Biarritz, the pearl of the Basque coast, carries this mix of styles close to its heart and loves bringing opposites together. The web site is www.biarritz.fr . Biarritz is a 20 minutes drive.
Bayonne is a great city and many people like it more than Biarritz, the nice river with its restaurants and the old part of town with pedestrian areas and shops is a visit worth. The web site is www.bayonne.fr. Bayonne is a 25 minute drive.
Tradition and modernity go hand in hand in this 'small' big city with touches of the Belle Époque (Golden Age) that has a top-flight cultural agenda with its international film and jazz festivals and its first-class cultural program. Gastronomy rivals nature as the most attractive feature of this city that's world famous for its cuisine and chefs, and boasts 16 Michelin stars.
San Sebastian is the home of the beaches 'La concha' and the surfer spot La Zurriola.
The web page is www.sansebastianturismo.com . San Sebastián is 30 minutes drive.
Our house is only 10 minutes from the two beautiful golf courses of Saint Jean de Luz. Thus, you can enjoy your hobby and be amazed by the Atlantic, discover the Pyrenees, enjoy the Basque cuisine or just unwind.
The highlight for golfers is the Biarritz area (20 min. drive). Here you will find 12 golf courses in a radius of 30 km - 5 of which are among the best in the region.
