About Julie Wu

An Ark is a house on piles over water with one end connected to land, I was very fortunate to be able to purchase this building in 1986-- The ark is now a historic building erected in 1917- I am the third owner. The original house was a barge jacked up on piles. I personally rebuilt the house in 1986 in the same theme of the original barges.

Julie Wu purchased this house boat in 1986

Why Julie Wu chose Sausalito

Sausalito is a very unique town with yachts and water on one side and shops, restaurants on the other side and beautiful houses covering the hills. Very much like the Med. in Europe

What makes this house boat unique

Our Ark is in the center of the downtown area-park your car in our private space in front of the ark and walk across the street to shops, coffee houses, restaurants, markets, boat rentals, bike rentals and the ferry to San Francisco is 5 mins walk down yacht strand next to the ark.

Relaxing waterfront view at an affordable price

The house was even better than the pictures. The bed was very comfortable, and I loved the ocean themed sheets. The bathroom had plenty of counter space for all our stuff, and there was plenty of hot water. The size was perfect for 2 adults and 2 dogs. There is a small open park within walking distance where we let our dogs off leash to play with other dogs. The shops and restaurants are within walking distance and nice just to stroll through with the dogs. We would definitely stay at The Ark again.

A perfect way to enjoy Sausalito

  • 4 of 5

The Ark is in the perfect location to enjoy Sausalito. The ocean front setting is amazing, there are restaurants and coffee shops in any direction you walk, parking right in front and a short walk to the ferry.

The house is very inviting and well stocked. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is the bed is extremely firm.

Overall I really enjoyed my stay but would recommend a cozy more comfortable bed.

Excellent Location

The pictures don't do this property justice. Very relaxing and quiet location within walking distance to great restaurants, bakery, coffee shops and ferry. Will definitely stay again. Owner was great to work with and very quick to respond.

It was a very nice experience, we plan to be back.

We used it for seeing family in the Bay Area during the Thanksgiving long weekend. The house is on stilts and has open and airy feeling. It is well maintained and clean. Big comfortable pullout couch. Big deck over the water. Nice design and accents. The kitchen is well stocked with utensils and plates, pots. The bedroom was pleasant, the linen were clean. Lots of extra linen, pillows. The tv can be rolled in an out between the bedroom and the living room as needed for one's viewing pleasure.

Now as for the loss of 1 star: the house is divided into two sections and the dividing area is where the washing machine, water heater, etc, are. This area is between our living room and some other area of the other half of the house and while you can lock the door from your side, the doors are a bit flimsy sliding doors and overnight the light seeped thru form the other side. Another problem with this door is that apparently it gets rattled by wind or draft in the middle of the night, making it sound like someone is trying to get in which was quite scary. At 2 AM I had to jam a spoon under the door (sorry!) to make it less loose. The bedrooms could use some darkening shades. The blinds are white, + there are big sky lights, which, again, make the place bright and airy but I can imagine trying to sleep there in June past 5 in the morning. There is no dishwasher - I can't see where it could fit but it would be nice.

The surrounding area is beautiful. I read a complaint about the bar next door. We did not think it was an issue. It is maybe 40 yards away, separated by a small inlet of the bay. It is open until 10 PM and gets busy in the afternoon and evening. You can hear people talk and laugh, that's all. It is not a drinking bar, frankly, it is just a restaurant, there is no music, and we have not seen any rowdy behavior during our 3 nights of stay. After 10 PM the place is totally peaceful and quiet including the mornings.

The prices in the neighborhood are not for the faint hearted. I'm talking about you, $4 plain croissant. The local supermarket, Molly Stone's, leaves the prices of Whole Food in the dust by a wide margin.

All in all, the positives far outweigh the negatives. You can't beat the beauty of the natural environment, the view of the bay form the deck, the wildlife all around.

Highly recommended!
