Located on the waterfront at the end of one of the main pedestrian streets in Villefranche-sur-Mer, Le Petit Bijou ('The Little Jewel') is in one of the village's most historic (and most photographed) buildings. Staying in this apartment, you will be in the heart of it all, yet maintain great privacy and intimacy. The views from the private seaside balcony are unobstructed and dazzling, and the décor encourages our guests to relax, recover, and renew. Furnished with antiques and paintings from local artists, the floor is one of our favorite features: a fabulous tile called Spanish Tapis that was popular over 100 years ago that looks like a tile rug within the tile floor.
About the area: Villefranche-sur-Mer is a traditional Niçoise fishing village dating back to 1295 and anchored by two cosmopolitan cities on either side: Nice to the west and Monaco to the east. One could not speak about Villefranche without exclaiming its physical beauty. Surrounding its large, natural (and world famous) bay are cliffs and steep hillsides, brimming with olive and citrus trees, Mediterranean pines, and bougainvillea flowering plants. This lush vegetation meets the water’s edge, where the shades of blue are as dazzling as a sapphire necklace. The bay of Villefranche is surrounded by two of the most beautiful Caps in the Mediterranean: Cap Ferrat and Cap de Nice. These stunning limestone peninsulas- sprinkled with luxurious villas and lavish gardens- protect and embrace our bay. Amidst all of this is the charming village, hugging the coastline with colorful buildings. During a stroll through the maze-like streets of the Old Town, you will see beautiful balconies decorated with potted plants, fresh laundry flapping in the sea breeze, and hear the sounds of church bells and music wafting through the corridors. And of course, what description of Villefranche would be complete without mentioning the boating scene! Watching the comings and goings- from cruise ships to yachts to fishing boats- could be a full time occupation!
There is no shortage of things to do during your stay! And we are always happy to make recommendations. That said, part of the pleasure of being here is taking in the lifestyle of the village and the area: getting up and going for a walk or swim at the beach, shopping at the fresh markets (on Wednesdays and Saturdays), sitting on your balcony and admiring the beautiful scenery, exploring the village and all of its little quarters... Guests frequently come with a long list of all the things they will do, and then a couple of days into the trip, they decide to reduce the list and just enjoy the lifestyle.

I can't begin to describe our experience with Shelley and Riccardo and the "Little Jewel" in Villefranche. Starting with the reservation process, the deposit and fianl payment was a breeze, they stayed in touch throughout, and answered all questions in a very timeley manner. Riccardo reached out to us before taking off from the U.S. and arranged for a Taxi to Villefrance ( excellent). We knew where to meet Riccardo ( La Mere Germaine) and he was prompt, courteous and it felt like we already knew each other. He helped us with luggage and we made our way to the apartment. The Keys (for 3 locks) were easy to use and we never had a problem. When you walk into the apartment, your first thought is WOW !!! Immaculate !!! Riccardo then gave us a very thorough overview of how to operate everything in the apartment. Everything in the apartment is of superior quality and Shelley's exquisite taste is evident throughout. The lighting was superb, the paintings and artwork beautiful. Wifi worked great, music system fantastic, and unlimited calls back to the U.S. I especailly like the MANY electrical outlets, which you often don't find in Europe. Other posts will tell you about the village and surrounding cities and the numerous things to do. Lastly, Shelley took the time to have printed many many helpful tips to make the visit that much more enjoyable, thinkgs like bus lines, train information, walking trips, the beach, etc etc. You can tell that for Shelley and Riccardo, this is a labor of love. We are already planning our return trip next year, hopefully for two weeks. THANKS SHELLEY AND RICCARO !!!!!
We just returned from a month in France with two weeks of that visit taking place in le Petit Bijou in Villefranche Sur Mer. This was our first visit to the Cote d'Azur and it will hopefully not be our last. We LOVED everything about the town and our apartment. There is so much to do and see in this region, but my husband and I agreed each evening when we returned from exploring that our balcony at le Petit Bijou was our favorite place.
The apartment is bright and sunny, spotlessly clean and equipped to a high standard. Shelley is so warm and helpful and goes above and beyond when it comes to sending preparation for your visit and providing helpful information and guidance on what to see once you arrive. As I said, the best part about the apartment is the balcony where we spent every minute possible. We loved watching the small boats and huge yachts come and go in the bay just under our perch. Be sure to pack your binoculars! Sunrises were beautiful, as were the lights shimmering over the water after the sun set. We were treated to great views of Monaco's fireworks on three occassions. We loved swimming off the rocks right under our balcony many afternoons.
This was our first holiday in the summer months and we were concerned about crowds. We actually decided we prefer the peak season with all restaurants and shops open, the markets full and the streets and cafes full of people and energy. The water was so warm and we enjoyed the sea on many occasions.
There is no need for a car here. We loved being able to take the train or bus with such ease and so inexpensively. We went to Monaco, and markets in Italy. We took the bus to Nice several times. We took a tourist train from Nice into the Alps Maritime where we saw amazing scenery and several hilltowns. What a great contrast from the coast! We did most of the suggested walks and hikes in Shelley's book. The coastal walks are spectacular. We highly recommend taking the boat from Nice to Isle Sainte Marguerite for a day where there are amazing coastal walks and unlimited coves for swimming.
We recommend the Cote d'Azur, Villefranche Sur Mer and any of Shelley and Ricardo's apartments or villas. When we return to the Cote d'Azur, we will definitely be staing in one of their properties.
We stayed for 2 weeks in March. We were delighted with this property, it is small as described, but its main attraction is its location within the old town, on the sea front in Villefranche with fantastic views of the bay, looking over towards Cap Ferrat.
It has the added advantage of being no more than 5 min from the railway station with trains every half hour along the coast to Nice, Antibes, Cannes, Monaco, Menton, Ventimiglia and less frequently Grasse. There is also a regular bus service along the coast and to Eze though we mostly used the train (apart from to Eze) as it was far more convenient and much quicker.
The apartment itself is exactly as described on the website. The owner had organised a taxi for us from Nice Airport, which worked well. We were met on arrival and taken to the apartment (dont be put off by initial impressions of the alleyways up to the apartment from the drop-off point, they are characteristic of the old town and we quickly got to find them part of the charm of being in the old town). The owner's assistant Valentina met us and showed us how everything worked in the apartment including making sure we could link up to the wifi. This is a major benefit. The property was spotlessly clean, everything was as we expected.
The apartment has the added benefit of a small balcony overlooking the sea, it is perfectly adequate for two people and we had meals out on the balcony most days. There are also deck chairs provided, useful for taking on the beach or, as we did, sitting in the sun on the balcony.
There is a bakery and a small supermarket within 5 minutes level walk, adequate for our needs though a 2 minute train journey to neighbouring Beaulieu brings you to a large supermarket opposite the railway station, useful for stocking up. There are other shops in Villefranche but we tended to stick to the two mentioned as the others involved an uphill climb. Several restaurants within a few minutes walk as well, so the apartment has everything on its doorstep.
The apartment is expensive to rent but Villefranche is an expensive part of the world and the price reflects that. For its location on the sea front in the old town it is worth it for a special treat and we would recommend Le Petit Bijou to anyone.
One word of caution, the stairs up to the apartment from the road level are quite steep and although only one flight, anyone with mobility difficulties would struggle here and in Villefranche in general.
This is an absolutely beautiful apartment in an amazing position with unobstructed views of the bay.
Shelley is charming and has thought of everything to make a perfect stay. Le Petit Bijou is stylishly decorated and very comfortable. It is right at the heart of the old town with its beautiful streets and many fantastic restaurants.
Shelley provides lots of very helpful information on where and how to visit the surrounding area including some great walks. Even though we had stayed in Villefranche many times before, we still learnt new things which made for a great stay.
It was hard to leave. A week (or two) is not enough.
We just came back from VilleFranche and stayed in the most wonderful apartment. Shelley was so attentive and helpful and immediately available to help in any way.
The location is extraordinary with a view "to die for" from the balcony and living room...as you are sipping your wine and watching the yachts in the harbor.
The apartment was immaculate with everything we needed from an umbrella to a basket for marketing. Great comfy bed, beautifully decorated, very efficient kitchen, dining table inside and out, music, tv and books to read(hard to do with the incredible view).
We look forward to going back and one week was defintely not enough. There are great restaurants locally plus an easy walk or trainride to Beaulieau and Cap Ferrat. Also great people watching! Enjoy!
We have now stayed in this apartment twice, four weeks the first time and six weeks the next. Is it the most beautiful apartment in Villefranche? We think so, but we’ll be back again to make sure! It has spectacular views which are unforgettable, it is beautifully appointed and conveniently located five minutes from the beach, shops, restaurants and the railway station. The train takes you to all the stations along the Cote d’Azur, and, if you like walking, Beaulieu and Cap Ferrat are 35 minutes away on the bayside path and Nice is 50 minutes away along the Basse Corniche. And if that’s not enough, you get the friendliest and most helpful landlady imaginable.
Le Petit Bijou is located in the Old Town on the waterfront at the end of one of the main pedestrian streets. Villefranche-sur-Mer is nestled between Nice and Monaco (10 minutes from Vieux Nice, 20-25 minutes from Monaco). Although surrounded by a diverse, exciting cosmopolitan environment, it is still an authentic Niçoise village. I know, I live here, and it's hard to believe it is still that way-- wonderful! Within close and easy access are Antibes, Cannes, St. Paul de Vence, Grasse, Mougins, and just a bit further, St. Tropez, Ramatuelle, Bormes les Mimosas, or Aix, Arles, Avignon and all the villages of Provence. Take a ferry from Nice Port to Corsica (3 hours on the fast ferry), or head to Italy and visit Ventimiglia, San Remo, the Vallee de Roya, Portofino, Cinque Terre... But if you stay in Villefranche and the neighboring towns of Beaulieu-sur-Mer, St. Jean Cap Ferrat, Eze, and La Turbie, you'll exhaust a week or more just exploring and enjoying these lovely villages. Most of these sites are easy to access without a car. And if you are here to attend the French language institute, Institut Français, it is a 15 minute walk away.
