Franschhoek House Rental Photos and Description

Self-catering with 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, sleeps 6

Spend time in our spacious, modern holiday home set in a stunning location within the prestigious La Petite Provence residential boutique wine estate in the heart of the Franschhoek valley, surrounded by mountains. We are not the only ones to think we have one of the best views on the estate! Our house is our second home and it is comprehensively furnished and equipped to a high standard in a contemporary style. The landscaped garden is stocked with many indigenous 'water-wise' plants providing a colourful display.

The community has 24 hour security and there is a shared pool and tennis court. The estate is a short distance (walkable) from the centre of the village with all its local amenities and superb restaurants. Taste and buy La Petite Provence's own wines on the estate; Franschhoek's other wineries are also easily accessible for tastings and/or the restaurant facilities. Further details of the house and Franschhoek are given below.

Details of 9 Merlot Drive, Franschhoek: Our holiday home is furnished in a comfortable, modern style. The spacious living area has double doors leading to the verandah/patio with its stunning view across the vineyard to the mountains. The open plan kitchen area has a breakfast bar with 4 four stools and there is a separate dining room. The main bedroom (king size bed) has a full en-suite bathroom. The second double room (queen size bed) and the twin room share the shower room. Enthusiastic cooks will find the kitchen extremely well equipped. However, with such an abundance of excellent restaurants in Franschhoek, not to mention Paarl, Stellenbosch or the wine estates, dining-in may not be your choice. Alternatively, there is a portable barbecue for an alfresco meal outside or you can relax with an evening 'sundowner' on the terrace, perhaps to watch Franschhoek's own 'tablecloth' gently fall over the mountains. The residential community is covered by 24 hour security services.

Additional activities and excursions: Franschhoek is ideally situated for a variety of day trips. You could go whale-watching at Hermanus, just under 2 hour's drive away over the magnificent Franschhoek Pass, or visit the Jackass Penguin Colony at Betty's Bay and combine this with a visit to the Harold Porter Nature Reserve nearby, about 90 minutes via the Gordon's Bay road. Going in the other direction via Somerset West and the R310, Simon's Town and the Cape Peninsula National Park are 1 to 2 hours away. If you want to go up Table Mountain, drive to Cape Town early to beat the rush later in the day.

For the plant enthusiast, Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve is close by, Kirstenbosch Botanic Gardens on the slopes of Table Mountain are an hour's drive away, and the West Coast National Park also makes an enjoyable day excursion, easily reachable via Paarl and Darling.

Magnificent Mountain Passes: Some of the most stunning mountain passes in South Africa are within easy reach. As well as the Franschhoek Pass, the Bainskloof Pass is on the R303, just outside Wellington, to meet roads either to Worcester (which has an excellent open-air museum) or Ceres. If you continue to Ceres, you will drive along another of Andrew Bain's engineering feats, Mitchell's Pass.

Why Sue Vaughan chose Franschhoek

Following a short visit to Franschhoek in 2001, we were so taken with the area we returned the following year. An impulsive visit to the La Petite Provence Estate sales office sealed our fate. We would have chosen one of the 'cluster houses' but they were all sold so, after a look around the plots available for 'plot and plan' houses we selected the one with the best view to the mountains at the end of the valley! The house was finished in September 2003; every returning visit is a delight. As soon as the front door is unlocked the unhurried pace of life in Franschhoek envelopes us with a 'welcome home' familiarity and all cares fall away. Sheer bliss.

Beauty & tranquility

  • 5 of 5

We arrived long after dark, so waking up to views of Franschhoek's surrounding mountainscape was rather breathtaking. The setting is tranquil, the neighbors as quiet as can be (unless you count the quiet snip-snip of garden clippers from one fastidious gent), and Franschhoek itself is a jewel. Breakfasts in the garden are a daily highlight. The property has everything one could want. We made this our base for a week's exploration of the wine country, and while it's not as central as Stellenbosch) it more than makes up for the minor additional driving time with its peaceful and beautiful setting. I wholeheartedly recommend this property.

Owner's Response: Having always considered Franschhoek to be a real 'gem' in the most stunning setting, it is a compliment to know that others have found the same beauty and tranquillity. Don't just rely on our hearsay - let us welcome you so that you may experience it for yourself.

Excellent environment and lovely house

  • 5 of 5

For our 10 days stay we looked for a house closed to cape town and we found this, because it's just an hour drive to cape town and all the attractions around the famous city. Franchhoek itself is a nice city and we love the environment. The service upfront from the owner was really nice - everything was like described and we got easy access to the house in the secured estate. The house was excellent equiped and everything was prepared for a carefree selfcatering time (if necessary). In fact, the BBQ we don't really need, because we stay in the culinary capital town and so you have to go out for lunch and dinner :-).

Unfortunately the pool of the estate was not that clean as it should be (green water - so we prefer to drive to beach (1 hour drive - really nice between Gordons Bay and Pringles Bay)), but this was an issue of the estate.

The overall impression of the house and all the surroundings are excellent. At the end my family don't want to go back home, because it was that nice.

Owner's Response: It is always nice to know that guests enjoy the house and the surroundings as much as the owner! With regard to the communal pool, the Estate Management has been made aware of the less than satisfactory state and the matter will be dealt with. It was an unfortunate point to have been raised.

Franschhoek is a little gem, tucked away in a horseshoe valley, surrounded by stunning mountain ranges with activities catering for all tastes. The physically active can walk or ride in the unspoilt countryside, hike on the mountain ranges, play golf on excellent courses nearby or try their hand at trout fishing on local rivers. For the more sybaritic, the boutiques, galleries, restaurants or wine estates of Franschhoek, Paarl or Stellenbosch beckon. Cape Town with its majestic Table Mountain is just 45 minutes away, safe bathing beaches are less than an hour away. Alternatively, take advantage of the friendly welcome in any one of the 20 Franschhoek vineyards and be tempted to taste some stunning and international award-winning wines or treat yourself at one of Franschhoek's renowned restaurants. Stellenbosh and Paarl are also very near or you may want to try whale-watching at Hermanus, less than 2 hours away over the breathtaking Franschhoek Pass. The choice is yours.
