San Martino In Freddana Farmhouse Rental Photos and Description

3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, sleeps 6

Casa della Volpe (Fox House) is in the high hills above Lucca, has both intimate and distant views over the valley. It has beamed ceilings, an original Tuscan stone kitchen sink, terracotta floors downstairs, ceramic tiled floors upstairs and a super cosy wood burning stove in the sitting room to compliment the central heating on cooler days. Original bread/pizza oven, pergola for outdoor dining. Restored in 2005/2006 in traditional style but incorporating modern facilities. Sweeping views can also be seen from bed in the main bedroom. One of the bedrooms is under the eaves. Heated towel rails. Hair dryers. Satellite TV. DVD. WiFi. (Broadband) The house is charming, well equipped for convenient living. Very private, the house is not overlooked by other houses. Fresh herbs in season. It has an adventurous road. While it is a semi-detached property, the adjacent building is not occupied. It has a well stocked supermarket about three km away as well as a chemist, dry cleaner, hairdresser. Florence is an hour away by car or by rail. Trains run hourly. Horse back riding available. Bicycles can be hired in Lucca.

Long term lets are also possible at this property as well as short term lets.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Casa della Volpe is a welcoming house set in the hills, surrounded by olive trees, with stunning views and the walled city of Lucca just visible in the distance. The old house has been beautifully restored, inside and out, with every modern convenience and home comfort you would want on a holiday. Just the place to soak up the atmosphere of Tuscany as soon as you arrive.

The enormous king size bed in the main bedroom is one of the most comfortable I have slept in and wakening in the morning to hear the birds singing and seeing dawn break over the valley is memorable.

The kitchen in Casa della Volpe is well equipped with everything you will need to be able to rustle up any dishes if you want to cook at home. However, we visited an interesting variety of retaurants (all within a few kilometres) that offered a tasty range of Tuscan home cooked food from simple, delicious lunches to more elaborate dinners. We were never disappointed.

There's a well stocked supermarket, a chemist, bank, restaurants and little bars where you can have a quick coffee or take your time sitting at one of the tables outside – all just five minutes away from Torre at the bottom of the hill.

In the evening, sitting in the garden under the jasmine covered pergola, with a glass of wine and watching the lights of Lucca twinkling in the distance was a tranquil way to end the day.

Although this is a magical retreat you are not too far from the coast, the mountains, central Tuscany, the marble quarries of Massa and beyond. An ideal base to discover the north of Tuscany, but close enough to explore Pisa, Florence or Barga to the north. Lucca is only 10kms away and well worth a visit to see the old parts of the city, the beautiful architecture and cycle round the top of the medieval city walls.

Mark, the owner, was extremely welcoming, kind and helpful. He obviously cares that his guests have a great holiday experience, has extensive knowledge of the area and nothing was too much trouble. All of the above made for a wonderful time and we hope to return before too long.

Pastoral Lucca Farmhouse.

  • 5 of 5

The property was exactly as described and depicted. We were 3 couples but never felt cramped for space. Everything (rooms, appliances, etc) was spotless and well-maintained. An incredibly peaceful place with a view that inspires quiet contemplation. Mark was the perfect host and upon our arrival showed us where to find the essentials (grocery store, bank, and the best of local food). He also acted as travel agent, supplying maps and "inside" information. Every suggestion was spot on. I give this property the highest of marks and recommend it to anyone lucky enough to find it available. The lovely Lucca is about a 15 minute drive, half of which is spent negotiating the drive down to the main road.

Nice house, nice view and great atmosphere

  • 5 of 5

The whole family (mum, dad, two boys age 2,5 and 14) loved the stay in "Casa della Volpe". Great house with a really nice view. Everything was clean, the beds were nice and the kitchen well equipped.

The house was really cozy and the surroundings were great. We made great trips to Pisa, Lucca, a stalactite cave and small cities near by.

It might not be our last stay at "Casa della Volpe" :-)

great host and great scenery

  • 5 of 5

We were all very delighted with our stay in thiscomfortable house. Mark, the host, was most welcoming and helpful during our stay. The house is very well equipped and clean. The views of the hills were amazing. I would full heartedly recommend this house without hesitation. Keep in mind that a car is necessary and driving up the hill requires an experienced driver.

Tuscan Heaven

  • 4 of 5

We have had a wonderful holiday in Casa della volpe. The drive up to the house is exciting with hairpin bends and finally a narrow road. The view from the house is so beautiful, the evening you can see the lights of Lucca. Although there was a heat wave it was still nice to sit out.

The house is cozy and has everything you need. The host is very kind and extremely helpful. He har sweetest however. We had teenage children and they also enjoyed their stay. The owner has great knowledge of the area, so you have to end ask him if you want some ideas of where to go and eat, what to visit and so on. We are pleased to have had the pleasure of staying 13 days in the house and would love to return again

Fantastic Rental

  • 5 of 5

This was our favorite rental in Italy. The views are fantastic and the house itself is lovely. There were 5 of us and we had plenty of room. Mark, the owner, was extremely helpful and a pleasure to spend time with. He gave fantastic directions to the house and after we were settled in showed us where the nearest grocery store was. I highly recommend getting to this house during daylight hours the first time. The road up is extremely narrow (often only room for one car) and especially the last bit of roadway would have been difficult maneuvering the first time in the dark. After driving up twice in the first afternoon, we were fine with the road even in the dark. The kitchen has everything you need to cook great meals (we even BBQed one night). Appliances all work great. The wi-fi was slow, but if you have cellular data plan the cellular coverage at the house was fantastic (at least with TIM) so you can use your phone/tablet for faster internet. The location worked well for visiting Pisa, Voterra, Florence, and Cinque Terre. The house is about a 20 min drive to Lucca and the Autostrada. It might be a little far for day trips much further away, but perfect for where we wanted to go. I would definitely stay there again. I am not sure what the AC is like as we didn't need it (a huge plus was the window screens which allow you to leave the windows open at night without worrying about being eaten alive by mosquitos--many places we rented in Italy had no screens on the windows). It was not terribly hot when we were there so open windows worked well (temps were in the 80s during the day and cooler at night).

La Casa della Volpe is a delightful 18th Century house which has been tastefully modernised to retain its original charm and character. It is set in the hills above Lucca in a quiet, rural area made up of olive trees, vineyards and woods of chestnut, oak, acacia and arbetrello trees. It is possible to harvest chestnuts in the autumn and find wild mushrooms after the rains, if any, in summer. Violets grow under the olive trees in spring, wild carnations and other wild flowers grow along the roadsides in the summer. The air is fresh. The house looks over to the church and tower of Torre Alto and down to the walled city of Lucca which is about 10 km away. Beaches are half an hour to 45 minutes away, depending on the beach location and traffic. Historic World War II villages are a half-day visit; the Leaning Tower of Pisa is 35 km away. A guide to services and restaurants is provided.

Other Activities: Touring the area and visiting the walled city of Lucca, Florence, Bologna, Cinque Terre.

For horse back riders, there is an equestrian centre nearby for rides through the woodlands and along the river for from one hour to three day treks.
