|Minimum Stay||2 - 7 nights|
The house was designed by a Swiss architect and completed in 2009. It has an elegant interior with natural materials such as wood, slate floors and glass. There is a pleasant indoor temperature in summer and winter. The house is heated with natural hot water. The large windows allow an unrestricted view to the fjord and the weather changes. In winter, Northern Lights can be observed without leaving the house.
A private hot tub is at the guests' disposal.
The bedroom with two large wardrobes and a double bed invites to romantic hours. The bathroom is in black stone and has a spacious shower. The kitchen has all comfort such as dishwasher, stove, microwave and fridge.
The large living room has a bunk bed and a sofa as well as a table with chairs. For your comfort, internet access is available with a screen, keyboard and mouse. Loudspeakers and HiFi equipment complete the list.
We had a great stay, the house is gorgeous and the view is amazing. Everything was as described, both Thomas (the owner) and Anna-Baura (the caretaker) were helpful and polite. Could not have asked for a better home base for our Iceland adventure!
Very clean & comfortable. Everything included for a one week stay. Good service on arrival. Beautiful views to wake up to every morning.
My wife and I stayed at the Sulur house from April 3-5, 2016.
-Close to Akureyri (20-30 minute drive): a great location for exploring the area.
-Incredible view of the Fjord. Wall-to-wall windows mean watching the sunset as you relax on the couch. I can't imagine a better view of the fjord, and this includes the northern lights, which we could see from inside the house.
-Radiant heating from the floor is wonderful during colder temperatures.
-Typical provisions are all present, with sleeping space for 3-4 quite easily.
-There is good paved parking available near the entrance to the house
-We had some difficulties arise with our stay, but the owners handled the difficulties very well, and I am confident both 1) that this circumstance was an exception, and 2) that they would handle any future exceptions equally well.
-Beds are *VERY* comfortable.
-Shelves and cabinets in and near the kitchen area.
-Computer provided with internet connection.
-A great guidebook in the house that has suggestions for activities and restaurants in the area.
-Nothing I'd classify as "bad".
-Hot tub has some key nuances (some are noted in the guidebook).
Cover doors are very heavy. *You need more than one person to handle this.*
It is not a "whirlpool" hot tub. No jets, nor a temperature control to keep the water warm for later.
While it's filling, you do not have hot water in the rest of the house.
Currently there is only one wooden bench in the tub, and this does not have multiple levels to it. The owners intend to add more seating in the future.
*Overall, the tub can work just fine to relax and rest muscles. You just have to plan ahead a little bit.
- The shower has no storage for hygiene items, but I this might be changed soon.
- Privacy: this house is on a farm complex with a few other houses. The one next has a view of the side windows of this house, as well as the hot tub area. Curtains are available to block the windows, so this wasn't a big deal to us.
Very nice house; well built with quality materials. It fits right in to the beautiful outdoors, with plenty of natural light and a relaxing atmosphere. A few factors made it not quite "perfect" for me, but I still gladly give this house a 4-star rating. And if you don't mind the hot tub nuances I mentioned, then it's definitely a 5-star rating. The owners provide a great place for their guests, and they appear to be continually improving the property as a whole.
Sulur is in a lovely position with stunning views across and along the fjord.
The house is clean and nicely appointed and the hot tub is an excellent feature. The kitchen was missing the described microwave but this didn’t cause us any concern.
The house location gives easy access to route 1 for exploring the north of Iceland. Even in winter Godafoss was only a 35 minutes’ drive and Myvatn could be reached in less than an hour and a half.
Thomas and Carmen sent a useful information pack when our booking was confirmed, which contained information about the property and suggestions for visits around the area. Because we were arriving in the dark Carmen also helpfully provided a site map so we could find the house easily.
The information pack explains about the web cams on site and says that no private areas (e.g. patio area) will be published on the net. However, we found that items on our patio were in view from the neighbouring house’s web cam. The hot tub lid acts as a screen so the hot tub itself is not in view but the side bedroom window is in clear sight of the web cam.
The house provided a comfortable, quiet and restful base for our trip. We were fortunate to see the northern lights several times during our stay. We enjoyed our visit very much and would certainly consider staying here again.
This house is in such a beautiful location and had everything we needed for a perfect stay. It was such a shame it was booked up and we could not stay longer.
The beds were all very comfortable and the hot pot with the most fantastic views was the highlight of out stay !
We would definitely recommend this house to friends and would hope to return in the future to explore the area further
My husband and I just returned from a week in Sulur House. The house is modern, warm, comfortable and well equipped. The kitchen is compact but adequate for preparing meals (it has no oven). There is a computer for guest's use and a state-of-the-art stereo system with varied music choices. The outdoor hot tub is a bonus.
The surroundings are spectacular. The house is directly on Eyafjord with mountains (snow covered when we were there) and pastures all around.
The host responds promptly and provided a helpful list of things to do and see. .Anna keeps the house spotless and is nearby to answer questions or solve problems.
The town of Akureyri is only 20 minutes drive from the house and is just the right size. Not too big but large enough to have anything you need. It has a wonderful book store, restaurants, grocery stores, tourist office and ski area.
Iceland is an island of ever-changing landscape and light Geologically it is Mother Earth at her active best. We explored geysers, thermal pools, waterfalls, glaciers, icebergs and National Parks. Sulur House is a perfect home base for experiencing northern Iceland. We loved Nollur Farm and Sulur. We hope to return..
Situated at the wonderful Eyafjord, perfect 180° view to the west.
30 kilometers to Akureyri (airport, shopping mall, hot springs, hospital, museum, concerts) and 8 kilometers to Grenivik (shop, gas station, museum, golf course, horse farm)
Horseback riding: Near the house is the horse farm 'Polarhestar' with more than 100 horses. You can rent them for a few hours or take part in a longer ride in the nearby valleys.
Golf: There is a small 9-holes golf course in Grenivik 8 kilometers to the north.
Skiing: In winter, rides to the nearby Kaldbakkur with a big snowmobile are available. In Akureyri there is a classical skiing area with lifts and illuminated slopes.
