Nézignan-l'Évêque House Rental Photos and Description

Watchtower, inner courtyard, grotto plunge pool, sun terrace, sleeps 8+4 persons

The village of Nézignan l’Evêque was in the possession of the bishops of Agde for over 800 years and lies on a hill that gives it its typical provincial French character. The around 600 year old, fully restored house complex is situated in the quiet, listed heart of the village that is one of the rare villages built in the spiral method - so-called 'en circulade' - of the Middle Ages to defend itself better. Surrounded by vineyards, the sunny village has its own bakery, post office, bar, good restaurant and small grocer.

The house in the historical center of the village is constructed from stone around a broad circular staircase that ends in a once fortified watchtower.

Completely and luxuriously restored to combine historic with modern, its character of the Middle Ages remains but with all modern comforts, such as central heating with under-floor heating for the winter, air-conditioning in the main bedroom for the summer, large fully equipped kitchen, bathrooms, etc.

It can sleep up to 12 persons. 2 in the main bedroom with bath and shower, 2+2 in Bedroom 2 with mezzanine and shower, 2 in Bedroom 3 with shower, 2 in Bedroom 4 with balcony and shower and +2 if needed in the living room on a sofa bed.

Kitchen/dining room for 12; Living room with mezzanine; inner courtyard open to a room with a Louis XIV fireplace, bar/kitchen, BBQ, table for 12 and an adjoining gated grotto plunge pool (1.5m x 2m x 3m with counter-current); watchtower with beautiful 360° view; sun terrace.

Enjoy French village life: The large and spacious, fully restored, luxury 'Maison de Maitre' allows the holiday maker to enjoy life in a typical, quiet French village. Everything is reachable by foot with cars rare in the narrow winding streets. From getting the fresh croissants and baguettes in the morning at the village bakery (the village is calm and secure enough to let the children fetch them alone), to wandering the squares and alleyways of the neighbourhood, to playing 'boule' in the evening with the locals, the attractive village of Nézignan L'Evêque provides a safe playground for your children and a cultural and historical experience for adults.

Children: house and village are the playground: For children, the private plunge pool next to the courtyard in the house is a perfect place to splash about and cool down. The house itself is an adventure to explore and play games with a watch tower and a large, winding stone staircase with rooms leading off in all directions. Very small children should of course be supervised on the stairs and near the pool.

Great place for a get-together!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed 2 weeks at Le Cœur Caché and had a wonderful time. The central staircase is a marvelous piece of workmanship - just take care going up and down! The view from the small room at the top is marvelous and it is a nice place to read or listen to music away from others.

We designed our trip to be a 'serial reunion' and had about 18 visitors (not including ourselves) coming and going over the two week period. There are plenty of interesting day trips in the area to keep people occupied. The small village is very friendly and we felt safe letting our two grand-daughters (10 and 6) make shopping trips to the local bakery to pick up the goodies we consumed in great quantity. Local restaurants are scarce (we never made it to one of the two), but Pezenas is only a few minutes away.

I think the people saying they came on July 2 got their date wrong!

Wonderful Home and Location

  • 5 of 5

My extended family and I (8 adults in total) just spent a fabulous week at Coeur de Cache. The home was perfect for our group: lots of gathering spaces and plenty of privacy also. It is very well equipped. We started each day at the boulangerie for pain au chocolat and then set off for day trips to the Cathar castles, kayaking on the Orb, climbing the inside of a mountain at the Grotte de Clamouse, touring Roman antiquities in Nimes, winery tours, eating seafood on market day in Setes and even a (long) day trip to Barcelona. We had dinner in the courtyard many nights and ended each evening with wine, games and star-gazing at the top of the house in the belvedere. Since there were so many things we didn't fit in during our week, we plan to come back and would be delighted to stay in Chris' home again. We would recommend the home highly to our friends (but not too many of them!) Many thanks!

Wonderful Place for Families

  • 5 of 5

Our family just returned from staying at Chris' property in Nezignan. We travelled with 3 young kids (6, 4, and 2) and also my wife's parents. The house is really unique with a big spiral stair case in the middle that connects all of the floors. I believe the story was that it was a former abbey that was converted. You just need to be a bit careful with the stairs with the toddler, but for our 4 and 6 year old they loved it. The town is great and we walked to the bakery every day and it's a great launch off point to go to pezinas (amazing market), Carcasonne, Sete, and other great sights. Definitely recommend this place and we'll be back in the future. Thanks again.

Lovely historic home

  • 5 of 5

This tastefully updated home in the historic center of Nezignan l' Eveque was true to the description and photos. It was perfect for our family of eight, six adults in their twenties and us. It has 6 plus floors around a central stone staircase and inner courtyard, with five bedrooms and a large kitchen with huge windows overlooking the rue, a spacious living room open to the courtyard, and several other rooms to sit and enjoy the view of vineyards and neighboring villages. We had more than enough room in which to get comfortable and relax. The house is also very tidy and clean and fully equipped. The owner was very helpful and provided a booklet (as well as emails) with pertinent tourist information as well as all the basics. Linda greeted us when we arrived and was very helpful in acquainting us with the house and area. We have several history buffs in the family and were impressed with the quaint village and narrow streets unspoiled for many centuries. Most mornings we woke to the sound church bells and eventually headed to the local buolangerie to pick up baguettes and jam for our large crew before we began our daily excursion. The owner suggested many restaurants in the cool town of Pezenas but one in our own village, Hostellerie de Saint Alban, was superb and worthy of mention. There is a lot to do in Pezenas and the surrounding towns. We visited gorges, vineyards, beaches and ruins and enjoyed the delicious cuisine at all of these locations. In fact, there were many places we did not get to and have already discussed coming back. Oh, and the weather was great! Lots of sunshine every day with only one day of rain.

Perfect in every way...

  • 5 of 5

We spent 5 days in early autumn at Le Cœur Cache and when we left we were kicking ourselves for not staying longer. This place has been lovingly restored and the level of care and detail right down to the finishing touches blew us away.

The kitchen (both of them - inside and out) was huge and well-equipped, the bedrooms were all massive and the shared rooms (either the cavernous lounge or the peaceful "crow's nest" room at the top) were fill with books and comfortable furnishings. The décor is somewhat eclectic but it seems to work in this house as the layout itself is somewhat eclectic - the rambling nature of the spiralling staircase and its myriad of rooms that branch off it took our breath away when we first arrived.

We did try the plunge pool which was just on the wrong side of cold but I can see how, in the middle of summer, that that pool would be the busiest room in the house! The central courtyard was also a nice, cool, haven and whilst we didn't dine outside, I can imagine that it would be a fantastic place to while away the evening.

It is also a really good central location for exploring Languedoc. Pezenas was our favourite place.

On the downsides (and I am having to really think hard here!): the nearby church clock tower chimes 24/7 (but we got used to it) and the local café/bar is not worth going into (hardly the owners fault!). Seriously though: it isn't toddler friendly (possibly even young children friendly) because the central staircase and the many balconies (with associated drops) kept us on our toes as we monitored our 2 and 4 year olds.

The owner - Chris - was extremely good to communicate with before and after our stay. The company who are the go-between for us on the ground in Nezignan was also excellent. This made for a hassle free stay.

My wife and I would not hesitate to come back here - without kids next time (sorry kids!). Therefore, I happily, and whole-heartedly, giving this 5-stars.

Owner's Response: We are very glad you enjoyed yourselves and would welcome you back. For very young children, you are right, the spiral staircase must be a nightmare, however once they have learned how to deal with stairs, they should be okay. The balconies are well-protected and the pool even has a gate, which is often not the case elsewhere.

Only 3km away is the wonderful little town of Pézenas with its historic old town, restaurants, antique shops, weekly market and good shopping. The closest beaches are only 15km away; other long, attractive sandy beaches are between Agde and Sète as well as in the direction Narbonne - all three places well worth a visit. Inland is a wildly romantic area with canyons, caves, Lake Salagou with sailing and beautiful hiking trails in a rocky Mediterranean landscape.

Golf: Two wonderful golf courses nearby: Cap d'Agde and St Thomas
