About Paola Pardini / David Hayward

Me and David during our gardening time.

We moved to the countryside to spend our free time outside enjoying nature.

I'm from Lucca and David is english. It could be work!

Paola Pardini / David Hayward purchased this apartment in 2001

Why Paola Pardini / David Hayward chose Piana di Lucca

We love to travel and we'd like to meet at Stonehouse the people that we couldn't meet away.

This house was the property of Agostino, the old farmer who lived here a long time ago, with his animals and his vegetable garden. We renovated this building to preserve the character of a farm house.

Our guests say: 'home away from home'. This is our goal.

What makes this apartment unique

When we were looking for a farm house, we saw this property and we thought: 'this is it!'.

We saw the mountains around, the churches on the hills, and the sunflowers. The colours around helped us to decide.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Many thanks for your hospitality - you are so generous.

The loft is beautiful and your house and garden too. We enjoyed your bakery.

The surroundings are beautiful. Steven made fantastic bike-trips.

It is a pity to have to leave, but hope to visit you again in the future

Beautiful, quiet, comfortable

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for 4 nights. It's a very cozy space and was a great place to relax and feel at home. Paola and David were both very helpful and very responsive. We had everything we needed. And the bed was amazingly comfortable!! This location is a bit nestled away but that's what we were going for. Lucca is about a 15-20 min drive and Florence is about an hour away by car/train.

a clean and comfortable apartment and a great holiday

  • 5 of 5

we very much enjoyed our stay - the apartment was clean and comfortable and the hosts David and Paola were friendly and helpful - its location was good, a few miles out of Lucca in a quiet hamlet - there was a restaurant nearby which served good food and was obviously popular with locals - Lucca itself is a gem - very beautiful ancient walled city with narrow streets and beautiful houses - not too full of tourists and very relaxing - we also went to Florence and Pisa and to several hill villages - all wonderful - we would recommend this area to anyone and the property made a very good base from which to explore it

Great base for exploring Tuscany

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Stonehouse for five days during an extended tour of Italy. David and Paola are wonderful hosts. Paola greeted us with a delicious fruit pie and a bottle of wine. The room was clean and functional, and the gardens and grounds were beautiful. We had a rental car so were able to take day trips to Florence, Siena, Volterra, San Gimignano and, of couse, Lucca, which was our favorite. All in all, a very comfortable stay.

Beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

We flew into Rome, rented a car and drove up the A1 motor way. Unfortunately we ran into a very bad accident and we were dela.yed in arriving at stone house. Upon our arrival we were met by Paola and we felt at home right away. Very peaceful spot. The stone house is very well kept, clean, beautiful gardens. This is a very good location to use as a base with many important distinations close by and easy to reach by car. A car is absolute necessity and a GPS. Stone house is located close to a small village. We were very pleased with our ten day stay and would not hesitate to visit again.

Beautiful Grounds and Heart of Country Life.

  • 4 of 5

I highly recommend this experience a bit off the beaten path in Tuscany. It is close enough to a grocery store and a couple of restaurants, and a good location for exploring upper Tuscany. It is about a hour from Florence (depending on traffic) and closer to Pisa, and even closer to Lucca which was my personal favorite. Plus the area north of there, between the two mountain ranges is beautiful and filled with quaint villages and unparalleled scenery (which Rick Steeves never talks about). I would definitely recommend a vehicle, and not picking it up in Florence (the map may make it look easy to get out of town, but it is very complicated with 'round abouts' and one way streets. The apartment was good size and offered WiFi that was on the weaker end of the spectrum, compared at least to American standards. The kitchen was well enough equipped and had a full size refrigerator. The apartment and the area is peaceful, other than unexpected sounds of children wailing and dogs barking. It is very attractive or nicely done. The bathroom is through the bedroom making the arrangement uncomfortable for a extra adult or couple. The owners are meticulous about their care for the property and about their recycling. They want their garbage (unrecycled) kept to a minimum which required a lot of separating, including tissues. This is admirable or can be an annoyance, depending on how you view it. I would recommend the place and hope to go back some day. The owners were kind and engaging.

Our house is a few miles from Lucca in the green of the Tuscan countryside. The village is S.Ginese di Compito and the adress is Via Centoni, N° 14.

The town of Lucca, with its famous ring of walls, can be reached in a quarter of an hour.

The motorway, which is close at hand, brings you in less than an hour to the artistic treasures of Pisa, Florence and Siena.

The rolling hills of Chianti country and the Etruscan town of Volterra can also easily be reached. For rest days, there are many interesting excursions locally - on foot or by bike - to explore the Bientina marsh with its interesting birdlife, or the Pisan hills.

The Appuan Alps, with their spectacular summits and historic marble quarries are less than an hour away, whilst on the other side of the Garfagnana valley there are the more gentle slopes of the Appenines.

For those who prefer the sea, the riviera is half an hour away at Viareggio, whilst the wilder coastline of the Cinque Terre is only a little further .

Other Activities: birdwatching

Ski: Possible to reach the Abetone Pass in 0 minutes for piste skiing.

Numerous ski mountaneering opportunities
