The living room area consists of lounge, dining room and kitchen. This is all one single open space, which prevents a feeling of tightness. There is a small library with a stock of up to date books in German and English as well as hiking maps. A bar table is an ideal spot for games and late hour talks.
All the furniture is new and without wear. Tables and lockers are solid oak. A new solid oak board floor creates a warm rustic atmosphere. There is a wall mounted 50' Plama TV, Stereo, DVD WLAN and others. The kitchen is equipped with fridge and freezer, dish-washer, ceramic stove top, baking oven and a multitude of equipment.
From the living room area you can enter the large patio, which is fenced together with a piece of garden, so one can leave smaller children unattended in the open for a short while. There is garden furniture and bbq. From the patio you can walk past the pond into the large garden area, which seamlessly merges with the horse pastures, meadows and forests around.
These beautiful holiday apartments are situated in a historic water mill building amidst pure nature. The area is Wittgenstein in the Rothaargebirge ( Red Hair Mountain Range ), a densely forested reagion with rolling hills. This like the adjacent Hochsauerland area has been a refuge for hikers and other recreation seekers from the Netherlands for decades. For some unknown reason the British and US travellers have not yet discovered this beautiful spot. Being a very anglophile person ( spent three years in the UK ) the proprietor wants to offer this apartment to UK and US nature lovers.
Some 80% of the region is covered with dense forest, mostly of spruce and beech. The narrow valleys between the hills are pastureland. From the apartment You look over the pond to the meadows, where most times some horses are in view. The mill pond in spring is alive with thousands of frogs and newts. Heron and red kite are a regular sight, on occasion the very rare black stork looks bye.

We had a great time here (1 week).
The apartment does exactly what it says on the tin!
Both the owner and the housekeeper are very helpful - beforehand with planning and during our stay.
The kids loved the outdoor swimming pool up the road with a wave machine! Woods and walks everywhere, Winterberg about 25mins away has some crazy activities (bike stuff, tree climbing, summer bob etc).
Be warned though, it will take 40mins plus to get to a motorway - depending on tractors lorrys and weather!
We have just returned back home to Scotland from our annual family vacation, and we were not disappointed. Everything that was outlined on the website was exactly correct. All new electrical appliances, cooker, freezer and of course the plasma television! The apartment was clean and very spacious. Mr Leyener was an excellent host and he provided us with various additional information on the surrounding area that we had requested. There is also an onsite housekeeper who made us very welcome also and was more than willing to help if we needed any information or help. We spent one week there and all members of our family had an enjoyable time, we would recommend a stay at this property and we would definitely return for a longer stay sometime in the future.
The Wittgenstein area is elevated between 300 and 800m. There are hundreds of miles of hinking trails, some of them long distance trails like the Rothaarsteig or the European Long Distance Trail E1. This is the most densely forested region in Germany. Traditionally most of the population made a meagre living from agricuture and forestry. Even today many people have to commute, because there is little industry. Tourism is becoming an increasing economic factor, but unlike in adjacent Hochsauerland, mass tourism hasn`t arrived yet. Because of its scenic beauty and numerous established hiking trails the area is destined to become a prime refuge for people who really look for a quiet hideaway for their vacation. Wittgenstein is in the western part of Germany. From here You can make day trips to Cologne ( 125km ), Frankfurt ( 140km ) or to the lovely University town Marburg ( 50km ).
Other Activities: Ice skating in winter, rock climbing at Kapplerstein
Golf: Only 3km from the mill construction of Sassenhausen golf course has started in June 2009. In September the driving range will be opened. In the next few months initially a short course with 6 holes is to be completed.
Ski: Are you interested in winter sports? You can get it all in the area, from many downhill slopes to hundreds of miles of cross country ski trails, ice skating, whatever you like.
