Anglers cottage is the perfect getaway for one or two people for a comfortable, relaxing ocean retreat. Handicapped accessible, drive right up to the door with no steps.
Perched above Bass Harbor and nestled in the trees on the 'Quiet side' of Mount Desert Island.
Sit & watch lobster boats come & go from the harbor. Adjacent to Acadia National Park, the Swans Island Ferry, the Bass Harbor Lighthouse and the Acadia Explorer shuttle bus.
Only 20 minutes away from the hustle bustle of Bar Harbor.

Large bedroom with king-sized bed offers complete comfort, (2nd bedroom, with queen size bed.) Deer are frequently seen grazing on lawn by the cottage. Bright open kitchen is equipped with microwave oven, coffee pot, toaster/convection oven, induction cooktop, pots and pans, utensils. Large front outdoor patio with gas barbecue grill.
I am proud of my local heritage. We are a family of generations of lobstermen, boat builders and fishermen. I enjoy sharing my piece of the 'quiet side' of mount desert island. I enjoy offering our guests sneak peaks of out of the way places on Mount Desert Island many travelers may overlook.
Janice Beal purchased this cottage in 2000
The quaint cottage with cathedral ceilings are the perfect Maine experience. Enjoy sitting by the cozy fireplace and enjoy the views of the ocean.
Overlooking the ocean, we have awesome views of the lobster boats coming and going, on the 'Quiet Side' of Mount Desert Island.
Clean, cared for, comfortable, convenient, calming - there's little not to like. Owners were readily available and friendly. It's so nice to be immediately able to hop on the Swan's Island ferry or the shuttle (well, it starts the following week, but the potential is there!). Easy to plop kayaks in the harbor, close to the "quiet side" attractions. And, of course, so nice to be right next to "Mainely Delights" restaurant, with the BEST lobster bisque. We're coming back!
Wonderful week's vacation at Angler's Cottage. We were pleased to see the cottage was as described and the photos accurate. Beautiful knotty pine walls and picture windows overlooking the ocean. It could not have been more relaxing and comfortable - listened to the boats and seagulls during the day but, pleased to say, very quiet at night. There was a patio area in front of the cottage and parking on the side. We hope to be able to go back next summer - the owner was very pleasant and helpful in every way.
Through the front door and the living room window is a view of Bass Harbor, where we observed many lobster boats sailing out the harbor each morning. We loved the exploring the "quiet side" villages of Bass Harbor, Southwest Harbor, and Northeast Harbor. We purchased two 21/2 lobsters from Phil's Fresh Fish at Bass Harbor pier for $5.50 a pound and steamed them ourselves at the loft! We took the 2 hour Island Cruise with Eli and his wife for only $25.00 each. We found large, flaky, blueberry filled turnovers in Northeast Harbor for $2.45. We ate "hot from the oven" popovers with maple walnut butter, coffee, and orange juice at Common Good in Southwest Harbor for a donation. All money raised from tourist goes to fund their winter soup kitchen. Wonderland trail and Bass Harbor lighthouse are very close to the loft and provide excellent ocean views. We hiked one of the smaller carriage road loops starting from Jordan's Pond which followed a shimmering brook most of the way. We drove to the top of Cadillac Mountain and enjoyed a 360 degree view of islands, Bar Harbor, fall foliage in the valleys, and 3 cruise ships outside the bay.
Angler's loft is as pretty as these pictures. However, we were only provided with one set of towels each and one extra roll of toilet paper for the week. Upon request, we received two additional wash cloths and one more roll of toilet paper. We were asked not to use the loft because of the steep ladder. We were told that the owner preferred that we not knock on her door with questions, even though our Verizon phone had no service and internet was very inconsistent. The kitchen has a one burner hot plate, toaster oven, coffee pot, and microwave. There is a gas heater that provides warmth for the cabin. The shower eventually got warm enough, but unfortunately, the pressure became less. The bed was comfortable as well as the living room furniture. Angler's loft was clean and new, but could use additional toiletries, soaps, and towels.
After reading the review below with its description of the location of the cabin, I approached our rental week at Angler's Loft with some trepidation. Indeed, this is not a private, secluded cabin nor does it claim to be. In fact I have yet to find a private, secluded place for two people to stay in Mt Desert. The cabin is up a short hill from the road where Maine-Ly Delights is located. As described by the previous reviewer, on one side is another rental property and on the other side, beyond a row of trees and bushes, there is a parking lot for the ferry. Neither of these bothered us during our stay. Because of the review below I asked about the camping trailer in the back, Janice, the owner said it is their camping trailer. My feeling is if it bothers you, keep the shade in the back closed. The portapotties are down the hill off to the side and not visable from the cabin. I probably wouldn't have even noticed them had they not been mentioned in the review below. You can park your car beside the cabin and it in no way will hinder the nice view of the water from the chairs on the patio or the view from the picture window inside.
During the day one does hear noises of boats in the water, occasional voices and seagulls flying about. Other than that it's been quiet just like any suburban neighborhood. Very quiet at night and in the early morning. I have heard fishing boats starting up early am, but this is common all along the coast.
The inside of the cabin looks just like its pictures. Internet was a touch slow sometimes, but ok during the day. I spoke to Janice and she is aware of the problem and trying to have it fixed. Janice offered me a hotspot for evening hours. She was very nice and accommodating for this and other requests. Throughout our time in Maine we had slow and often unreliable Internet.
Nice sized bathroom and the water in the shower works just fine. The cabin is comfortable, generally quiet and a lovely place to stay. The owner is delightful and helpful and always available which is not always the case with other rentals I have done.
If you're looking for a reasonably priced, comfortable rental for 2 people in a quiet location, I recommend Angler's Loft. If you're seeking complete privacy and solitude you might look elsewhere.
The photographs of the interior of the Angler’s Loft are representative. Unfortunately, the exterior shots of Angler’s Loft are less forthcoming. The house is behind the Maine-ly Maine restaurant and the view of the harbor and sunsets as described in VRBO are very much impacted by the restaurant building and not as depicted in the VRBO photographs. Angler’s Loft is also immediately adjacent to the owner’s other rental property McKinley House which is not disclosed by the photographs or in the written VRBO description. I had asked the owner for additional photographs before I rented but was told none were available. Perhaps seeing the porta-potties for the restaurant behind her house which is opposite and adjacent to the restaurant would have given us a clue that Angler’s Loft wasn’t the house for us. When we parked in the driveway for Angler’s Loft there was no front area to sit out other than in front of our car. Another “neighbor” to Angler’s Loft is a lot used to keep vehicles. On Sunday morning at 6am, a large diesel dump truck was started and idled waking us up before noisily pulling down the dirt drive. To the rear of the house visible from the bathroom is a camper which can only be described as “sketchy”. We were not sure whether it was inhabited or not. Angler’s Loft is not the quiet, intimate setting with harbor views we expected from the VRBO listing. During our stay at Angler’s Loft the internet was out. A prior guest had complained in his VRBO review about the internet, and the owner posted a note on VRBO saying it had been remedied. The owner did provide us with a hotspot after we notified her of the problem, but she required that we return it to her whenever we left the property and the reliability was not adequate. When we used the shower in the morning the hot water oscillated between hot and cold. Not fun when it’s in the low 50’s and you expect a hot shower. The owner, was apologetic, but made no promise when it would be remedied. We were offered the use of the shower in her nearby house. This was simply not our expectation in renting a house. We notified the owner that we would be leaving Angler’s Loft after one night due to the shower issue. We assumed we would receive a refund. That was not to happen despite our request for same, nor was our willingness to accept a refund of half the rental as an equitable resolution agreeable to the owner. Regrettably, we cannot recommend Angler’s Loft or this landlord.
We spent a lovely week at Angler's Loft, enjoying the view, the cottage layout and knotty pine walls and ceilings, the setting in low key, lovely Bass Harbor, and the most considerate hosts. We also appreciated the opportunity to drive easily to Acadia and Bar Harbor but to come "home" to our tranquil, peaceful setting. It really is perfect for a couple. It is immaculate and well maintained. We hope to come back some day soon!
This small cottage for two people was a great place to stay on the quiet side of the island. The facility was totally remodeled over the winter and is very pleasant. The owner was wonderfully helpful in offering suggestions of places to go and things to do. We would certainly go back. My ONLY complaint is that the WiFi connection was too weak to use. As WiFi addicts, that is the only thing that keeps me from giving Anglers Loft five stars.
Acadia National Park is at your doorstep, along with the Bass Harbor Lighthouse, just around the corner. Many outdoor activities including hiking, walking, boating, golf, kayaking, sightseeing trips, museums etc. Close to Bar Harbor (20 miles).
