Kona Hale Pili is a craftsman's masterpiece and a modern adaptation of the traditional Hawaiian pili grass covered house. Originally constructed in 1972, Kona Hale Pili has been totally renovated and appointed with elegant wood and stone accents accommodating modern amenities and a environmentally conscious low voltage lighting system and point source hot water. Kona Hale Pili is comprised of three separate buildings with soaring vaulted ceilings that are centrally connected by an open air covered lanai. A open air uncovered lanai and lush tropical landscaping adjoin the central lanai. Located direct oceanfront at the north end of Kahaluu Bay, unobstructed views are offered from Kahaluu Beach to Kaiwi Point at the end of Kailua Bay. Enjoy watching the surfers at the Kahaluu surf break, reef fish and turtles, spinner dolphins and breaching whales, in season, and spectacular green flash sunsets. Kahaluu Bay is accessible adjacent to Kona Hale Pili for experienced water persons, or by an easy five minute walk to Kahaluu Beach. We have been vacationers and part time residents of Hawaii for over thirty years. Our travels have taken us to many beautiful tropical places, but Kona captivated us. We found Kona Hale Pili in need of some TLC and embarked on what has become a stewardship to return the property to a condition suitable for its unique location. We enjoyed the six year renovation journey creating a craftsman's dream. You will appreciate it when you see it.

What makes this house unique

Quite simply, the oceanfront location could not be created today due to building setbacks and zoning constraints.

This home is exquisite! So well appointed! And for a coffee lover it was hard to be any closer to heaven.

Stephen and Joy are so very accommodating. I highly recommend working with this lovely couple on their lovely home.

A One-of-a-Kind, Truly Special Place

What a great place to stay! The house is amazing. With the outdoor, partially covered lanai and sliding glass doors that open directly to the ocean, it is designed to really incorporate the outdoors. The ocean breeze kept the house comfortable despite it being late June. We even had pretty little red-headed birds that would come through the living room for a visit. Beautiful woodwork throughout, comfortable furniture, and everything you could possibly need in the kitchen. Much better equipped than our own kitchen at home! The location is also great. Our kids were able to take surf lessons at the beach a three-minute walk away while we watched from the house. (We also spotted dolphins going by a few afternoons) There's also great snorkeling at that beach, as well as directly from the house. There's a grocery store a quick drive to the south, while the restaurants and shops of Kailua are a couple miles to the north up Alii Drive. When heading up, we generally opted to stay on Alii Drive, rather than taking the quicker highway, so we could check out the beaches and houses on the way. To be honest, though, we didn't go out to the restaurants as much as we planned because it was so nice just relaxing and watching the sunset from the house. We can't recommend this house enough!

Perfect Home, Perfect Setting

Our party of five adults are unanimous in our appreciation of this exceptionally comfortable, functional and aesthetically pleasing home. The overall design quality is remarkable, and our hosts have provided every amenity. The separation of public and private spaces works well. The joy of preparing and sharing meals together was enhanced by the spaciousness of the kitchen area and its openness to the indoors and outdoors.

The oceanfront location allows swimming and snorkeling just steps from the home. It was easy to find sun or shade to read, talk and watch the ever-present surfers.

Unique house with a great location right on the water

Our family enjoyed this house which had nice indoor/outdoor space and was perfect for dinners in the evening and sitting and looking at the ocean. The kitchen is well outfitted with everything needed for cooking. The location was a perfect base for activities nearby (snorkeling at the beach that's visible from the house) as well as those further away (hiking to Captain Cook's monument, green sand beach.)

Clean, new, everything worked, mind blowing setting, perfect for watching sunsets and for surfers just walk down steps and paddle to some of best surfing on big Island. Really fantastic. Gut wrenching to leave.

Kona Hale Pili is a modern adaptation of the traditional Hawaiian house. Hawaiian open air living at its best with louvered windows. Air conditioning is not needed as the diurnal breeze from the ocean during the day and the mountains in the evening provide natural air circulation. Ceiling fans throughout provide gentle air circulation in the bedroom suites.

Spend a relaxing day with an unobstructed view of the ocean for exceptional dolphin and whale watching. You will also have the prime location for watching the surfers at the surf break.

Dining, groceries and shopping are all conveniently located nearby.

For experienced water persons only, the ocean is accessible from the adjacent lava point. Easy ocean access is available at Kahaluu Beach.
