Kona Hale Pili is a craftsman's masterpiece and a modern adaptation of the traditional Hawaiian pili grass covered house. Originally constructed in 1972, Kona Hale Pili has been totally renovated and appointed with elegant wood and stone accents accommodating modern amenities and a environmentally conscious low voltage lighting system and point source hot water. Kona Hale Pili is comprised of three separate buildings with soaring vaulted ceilings that are centrally connected by an open air covered lanai. A open air uncovered lanai and lush tropical landscaping adjoin the central lanai. Located direct oceanfront at the north end of Kahaluu Bay, unobstructed views are offered from Kahaluu Beach to Kaiwi Point at the end of Kailua Bay. Enjoy watching the surfers at the Kahaluu surf break, reef fish and turtles, spinner dolphins and breaching whales, in season, and spectacular green flash sunsets. Kahaluu Bay is accessible adjacent to Kona Hale Pili for experienced water persons, or by an easy five minute walk to Kahaluu Beach. We found Kona Hale Pili in need of some TLC and embarked on what has become a stewardship to return the property to a condition suitable for its unique location. We enjoyed the six year renovation journey creating a craftsman's dream. You will appreciate it when you see it.

Quite simply, the oceanfront location could not be created today due to building setbacks and zoning constraints.

Beautiful home! Unique! Spectacular ocean front! Well equipped and very clean! I would suggest having more lighting in the bedrooms and perhaps a cover for the lanai when it rains. I would love to come again. Joanne

Owner's Response: J&J, thank you for your comments and glad you enjoyed our home and we look forward to your return. When we started the renovation the property there was no area of covered lanai and was really an issue. We decided to cover the areas for dining and seating only. We felt that the open area was OK as it allowed a view of Hualalai,and also of the wonderful monkey pod tree that provides shade for our home. In doing so we were trying to get the best of all, but when it rains the open area does get wet and the monkey pod drops leaves etc. As you know, you can still walk all around our home without being in the rain due to the overhangs in the areas without a lanai cover. So a minor inconvenience for living in open air in real time. We will follow up on your lighting suggestion. Didn't want to have too much light, but agree that some additional light could be helpful.

Fantastic Home and Location

This was a lovely home and the location couldn’t have been any better .There was surfing in front for The surfers and then a 4 minute walk to the snorkeling beach and just up the road the other way was a good boarding beach .The Home exceeded our expectations and Stephen and Joy were great to deal with .Will be sure to try and rent this home again when we go back to Kona. We would give this home a five star without question . The Adams Family

A repeat experience at an exceptional home

We just came back for our second Christmas holiday in Stephen and Joy's beautiful home. We were thrilled to return to this exceptional property for a week of close family times. The house remains the perfect holiday destination - central to multiple adventures and an outstanding base to come back to and watch the sunset. There was even a lovely Christmas tree waiting for us! The house is full of lovely touches that make being there comfortable and relaxed. The house is tastefully appointed with all necessities and more; the beds are very comfortable, and there was sufficient space for our family of 6 adults.

We definitely hope to be back again. Thank you for having us.

AMAZING!!!!!

Stephen and Joy were amazing hosts. They were very quick to respond to any and all inquiries that we had and when I called them, Stephen was very kind and helpful. Now, let's talk property. It is the most amazing and beautiful property on the water. I have never seen anything like it. We were there Dec 13-19, 2017 and I am sad we had to leave! We have NOTHING negative to say about this rental. It was 5 stars and beyond!! It was a very unique home. We actually would love to mimic parts of it when we build. We loved that all of the doors opened up and made it feel like we were always outside. The ocean breeze along with the sound of the waves was super relaxing. We were there to visit our daughter whom was attending YWAM and it was a 15 minute drive to see her. It was awesome. It is on the main drag so at times you will hear traffic in the front bedroom, but no one cares... we were in Hawaii. I highly recommend this rental!!!! We would have been disappointed to stay anywhere else. The family was in awe of this home and because of that, we didn't even leave it for 2 days while we were there. Keep in mind, it was December. There were no bugs, a few visiting birds which was neat, and no air conditioning. Not once did we wish we had it. Highs in the days were 83ish and lows of 68ish. ABSOLUTELY STUNNING!!! And I got the deposit refund back within 2-3 days.

Thanks again Stephen and Joy for allowing us to live and experience a little bit of your JOY. The coffee was amazing as well.

Incredible home in a perfect location

This house was perfect for a family of 5 and wildly exceeded our expectations. The house is beautiful and recently updated; the kitchen is very well-appointed (and more than adequate to prepare Thanksgiving dinner); the bedrooms are comfortable (and the master has large windows right onto the ocean); and the location right on the water, with easy access to snorkeling and a sand beach was amazing. And Stephen and Joy couldn't have been nicer or easier to work with. We couldn't recommend this place more highly and hope to return soon.

A Perfect Pad in Paradise

You know you are in an exceptional vacation rental when you regularly happen upon people taking pictures of the front of the house due to the thoughtful and stunning architecture....I am not kidding...this happened three times during the stay! The whole experience of staying in this house is nothing short of magical. The owners and property manager are super responsive and friendly, which is not always the case with VRBO. The location is close enough to town, but far enough away to ensure privacy and peace. The layout and furnishings are nothing short of perfection! The house happens to border some of the best snorkeling the island has to offer. We saw over a dozen turtles while snorkeling during our stay.....and we even saw a whale breaching in the distance, which is early for migration season! There was nothing better than coming back to this place for a cocktail after a day of fun in the sun. Do yourself a favor and pick this rental for your holiday in Kona. You will return home rested and relaxed and thankful that you got to experience this exceptional property and setting!

Kona Hale Pili is a modern adaptation of the traditional Hawaiian house. Hawaiian open air living at its best with louvered windows. Air conditioning is not needed as the diurnal breeze from the ocean during the day and the mountains in the evening provide natural air circulation. Ceiling fans throughout provide gentle air circulation in the bedroom suites.

Spend a relaxing day with an unobstructed view of the ocean for exceptional dolphin and whale watching. You will also have the prime location for watching the surfers at the surf break.

Dining, groceries and shopping are all conveniently located nearby.

For experienced water persons only, the ocean is accessible from the adjacent lava point. Easy ocean access is available at Kahaluu Beach.
