We've lived and loved Wells since the last century! We came here for the outdoor life and started an outdoor adventure business and a cafe. We've since expanded to own a gift store and now, recently converted this building into a guesthouse(summer of 2013). We love tramping and skiing in the mountains and lakes, and our passion is evident in everything we touch. Our ski tours have been featured in a variety of outdoor and travel magazines including Westworld, BC Magazine, and Air Canada's Enroute Magazine. Our Cafe has won numerous awards including Best Cafe in Northern BC, and our Gift Store has been called one of the most unique stores in the Cariboo! Expect Mountain Thyme to give you the same.
We think Wells is one of the most touching and unique places in British Columbia. It's a tiny town with more power and culture than places 100 times larger. We love being part of it.
Dave Jorgenson purchased this bungalow in 2010
We made the Mountain Thyme what it is because we're so proud of the working man's history of our area, and the heritage value of our architecture. It has been a labour of love to restore it to its simple structure, and celebrate its location and value.
Mountain Thyme is a beautiful wildflower, that grows in alpine areas, and it's also a play on the word 'time'. You can't help feeling like you're on a holiday, or 'Mountain Time' when stay here, and also, this building and the entire community of Wells is like a wild mountain flower discovered on a ramble. You will feel the magic of Wells, as soon as you step into the Mountain Thyme. On the living room wall is an old photograph from 1898 showing our valley from that time, and as you look out the window you see the connection with the space, and also the changes and growth that have come and gone like seasons in our community.
What a great place in a fantastic little friendly town! We used Wells as a 'jump off' point for our family paddle thru Bowron chain. It was perfect! visited the town, visited Barkerville and we loved it all! Everyone in town is super friendly and helped gather a few last minute supplies:-) Thankd you for a wonderful time.
Our family of 4 adults (and 1 dog) stayed for 3 nights and couldn't have asked for a better time. Dave and Cheryl were so friendly and helpful. Let us know of an area to run the dog & even a place, for us to eat on the way home. We had dinner at the Bearspaw Restaurant and enjoyed the food and such welcoming hospitality. Everyone so friendly. The Mountain Thyme Getaway is a great relaxing place to stay. Our adult children thought it was one of the best places we have stayed in years!!!
We stayed at the MTG for a couple of nights in November 2015. It was a very comfortable, cozy and warm experience in both the temperature and the ambience. Highly recommend this for everyone, families included. Best place in the area I'm sure. The food across the street at the Bear Paw Restaurant (in season) is delicious as well. Hosts Cheryl and Dave couldn't be more hospitable. Will definitely go back.
We just spent two nights here and really enjoyed the welcoming, friendly atmosphere of our hosts, who had obviously put a lot of thought into making this cabin a fun and relaxing place to stay. Nice touches, like a hidden flat screen tv with a varied collection of movies, an old record player, complete with many vinyl records, and, for us, a very nice touch - a small fenced back yard complete with dog house, to let our woof out into. We even had a delicious meal sent over, which was very much appreciated.
What a wonderfully relaxing 3 days at the 1940's miner's cabin. So unique, filled with history, a truly memorable stay! Our special meal one evening made by the owners was delicious. We will return!!!
Dave and Cheryl are amazing hosts and have created a wonderful paradise with the Mountain Thyme. We loved being here and enjoying the atmosphere. Thank-you for everything. T and D.
Experience the Gold! Barkerville, in 1862, was the home to BC's largest gold rush, which led to our incorporation in Canada. It has over 120 buildings, live interpretation, operating period mercantile, guided tours and displays. It is a BC Heritage site, a National Historic Site of Canada and contains two additional National Historic Monuments.
Wells, in 1933, became the largest town in BC north of Hope, with 4,000 people, all night grocery stores, 3 bars 5 churches, a giant community hall and even a train station office. Fred Wells wanted a prosperous town with a community spirit, and his goal live on today. With only 280 full-time residents, Wells is dominated by tourism and gold mining still. In the summer, there are two operating live theaters, constant concerts in other venues, and one of Canada's 10 best Music Festivals (Artswells). In addition, there are a variety of shops, restaurants and galleries, and our historically unique architecture is proudly maintained in the colorful residents preserved from the original mining construction.
Wells is also the gateway to 100's of km of trails, mountains, and canoe routes. It has an extensive hiking and Mountain Biking system, ATV and snowmobile trails, and the scenic Bowron Lake Canoe Circuit, a one week canoe trip, rated one of the 10 best canoe trips in the world.
Summer offers endless entertainment and cultural opportunities in a community set in a remote mountain valley, with some of the best large wildlife viewing opportunities in North America.
Winter offers some of the deepest and driest snow in Canada, unlimited groomed and off-piste trail riding for snowmobiles, and every type of skier or snow-shoer.
