One-Bedroom Cozy Cottage On The Ocean, With Private Pool.
Discover how to REALLY relax!
Would you like to relax in your own peaceful pool that you share with no one, listening to your favorite tunes, while contemplating the vast expanse of the ocean right in front of you - amazing whales, spinner dolphins and colorful fish, the sunsets, and complete serenity, for less than the price of a resort hotel room? Then our home will be perfect for you.
If you are like us, you want to do nothing but relax and disconnect while on vacation. We don’t like resorts, eating every meal out, sitting around a pool with 100 other people, or going to luaus.
Rick’s Place is a cozy, romantic home, perfect for couples or best friends who want to catch up and hang out. Unwind, enjoy each other’s company, and disconnect from your crazy busy life. Stock up in town (we will even tell you the best places to shop), and then head down to the house on the cliff. Spend your days sitting around in the solar-heated pool, reading on the lanai or sitting by the sea wall. Watch the whales jump in the winter months (they will wake you up at night during whale season!), reading and talking, and cooking dinner on the gas barbeque or in our well-equipped kitchen while enjoying an icy cocktail. Milolii sunsets are the highlight of the day- no two are ever the same. Turn off all the lights and lay out on the chaise lounges and look at the moon and the Milky Way at night. Showering in the outdoor shower with the ocean breeze blowing on you is refreshing and revitalizing. Stereo system acoustics are great, and you can play music both inside and out by the pool. There is good Wi-Fi and Direct TV on smart TVs, as well as a Blu-Ray player. But we hope you don’t spend your days watching TV- it is too beautiful outside!
There is a viewing area on the cliff where you can sit and contemplate the sea while enjoying your morning coffee or your evening libations. The Kona fishing fleet aims for the waters in front of the house, so sometimes you can witness a hook-up while staring out to sea (we provide binoculars). When the water is calm (the area is jokingly called Lake Kona because it is usually so flat!), it is crystal clear, and you can look down and see tropical fish and the occasional turtle or hammerhead shark swim by. Sometimes the surf is high and the waves crash against the cliff dramatically. One guest called the high surf “Hawaiian fireworks” which is a great description.
The drive down from the highway takes you from 1500 ft. elevation to sea level across a lava flow. We remember our first impression! It’s a long, narrow, winding ride, but there are spectacular views on the way down. If you want to go to town every night or do a lot of sightseeing, the drive may be inconvenient. For a day trip every few days, it is no big deal.
There is easy access to water and great snorkeling a short walk north of the house at the Milolii Beach Park. Honomolino Beach is a great nearby sandy beach. There are many beautiful beaches and good restaurants within an hour’s drive. Our house is centrally located between Kailua-Kona and Volcanoes National Park, which is a must see- where else can you see geology in action?
If you need supplies during your stay, there are well-stocked grocery stores 20 minutes south, in Ocean View.
Our home has one bedroom, 1.5 baths, plus an outdoor shower. Every room in the house except the half bath offers up an ocean view. Kitchen is easy to cook in and is well-appointed, and the living area is furnished very comfortably and is open and breezy. Bedroom and living room glass French doors open to the ocean view and breeze. The wrap-around lanai includes a small in-ground solar heated pool.
Why is the house called Rick’s Place? We bought the house from our good friend from Maui, Rick. For years, we would visit Milolii with him. We have always loved Rick’s Place, Milolii and all the wonderful people we have met there. We are thankful to Rick, who agreed to sell us our favorite place on earth, and our friends in Hawaii, who have helped up to make this dream come true. We loved it so much, we moved here from California. We now live a few miles up on a coffee farm, so we are close by if you need anything.
We hope you enjoy and cherish your time here as much as we do.
*NOTE* Homeaway has taken away the ability for us to speak in person before you book (they won’t let us share phone numbers before you book). Because our home is not near resort areas, we want to make sure it is the right experience for you. As soon as you reserve our property, you will have access to our phone numbers and we would love to talk to you. Call Melanie right away if you are unsure if our house is right for you. We will cancel the reservation and refund your full deposit within two days’ of your initial deposit if after our conversation you want to stay somewhere different- we will even help you choose other locations. We can easily communicate through the Homeaway portal when you make an inquiry too.

About Melanie and Dan Lewis
We live on a nine acre farm above Milolii by the Highway. We recently made the big leap across the ocean from the tiny Northern California town of Angels Camp. We are now full-time Hawaiian residents. We have been visiting the islands for decades and our heart has always been here. We have been business owners for years ( we owned a fishing tackle/marine/gas station/mini mart deli on a lake for 20 years which we sold to make the move, and Dan was also a partner in a stone masonry sales and manufacture yard). Now we are refurbishing the house on the farm and just kicking back and relaxing for the first time in our lives. We enjoy meeting new people and love to meet our guests. Our daughter lives in Sacramento and is soon to be married to a wonderful guy. They love to visit.

Why Melanie and Dan Lewis chose Milolii
Why is the house called Rick’s Place? We bought the house from our good friend from Maui, Rick, who built it. For years, we would visit Milolii with him. Rick is an ultra-cool, amazingly artistic guy, and the architecture of the house shows his artistic flair and creativity. We have been blessed with friends and family who have helped us make it a truly loved special place, with most of the artwork furnished by talented friends. We hope you enjoy and cherish your time here as much as we do.
What makes this House unique
The first time we visited Milolii, we wondered where we were going, as we drove down the long road across the lava flow. But once we were sitting on the deck, overlooking the blue ocean and watching the humpbacks against the background of a red sunset, we understood the magic of the place. We helped Rick install the pool several years later, and that really made the house perfect. I'm pretty sure there is not another ocean front house anywhere in Hawaii or even in the USA with a private pool that is an affordable vacation rental. We love our house and you will be able to tell. It's not one of those vacation rentals furnished with cheap furniture and bare minimum of kitchen stuff.

Another great stay at Rick's Place
This was our 3rd stay at Rick's Place. So we are a bit biased. There's not a whole lot I can say about the place that hasn't been said before. If you're interested in a relaxing, quiet place to rejuvenate without much choice in night life and close-by touristy things to do, this is your place. It was wonderful as usual. The house was very clean as usual (thanks, Susie!). Dan and Melanie take such great care of the house. Loved the little changes to the place they had done since the last time we stayed in 2016. The additional solar heating in the pool made all the difference in the world. The water temperature was very comfortable. The light features installed in the lava rock surrounding the pool was stunning. I loved watching the play of colors on the yard sculptures and lava rock from the deck at night. The addition of the dishwasher to the kitchen is much appreciated. That dishwasher has to be the quietest dishwasher I've ever been around. The weather was exceptionally nice during our stay this time. We enjoyed beautiful blue skies and calm ocean waters, something I hadn't seen before from the house in January when we always stay. And the whale watching was good. We had quite a few whale sightings while there. Lastly, the new television provider Dan and Melanie have switched to and the ability to access Smart TV apps was nice. There's a much larger selection of TV entertainment and I was able to catch up on a couple of Netflix series episodes I haven't had the time to do at home. All in all we had another wonderful time. Thanks for sharing your lovely home. We look forward to the fourth time we can come and stay!
The warmer pool is major! The lights at the pool are pretty funky, but they make us smile (like everything at Rick’s Place!). Now we have bamboo fencing to add to privacy. Dishwasher required a kitchen remodel, but so worth it!
A relaxing and well equipped home
My husband and I enjoyed our stay at Ricks Place. It was everything it advertised. High lights were beautiful sunsets and star gazing. It was a plus to have use of a washer and dryer!
5 Stars Isn't High Enough!
How do you describe a perfect experience? It started about 15 minutes after I completed the reservation. I got a call from Melanie making sure that I understood that this property is fairly remote. If I was looking for something closer to things, this wasn't it.
Getting to Rick's Place involves a 3 mile drive from the highway down a VERY windy road, but it is definitely worth it. Here's why:
** The pictures can't do justice to the property. It's a stunningly beautiful house, obviously well cared for.
** To say it is well-equipped is a serious understatement. We never lacked for anything. Dan made sure to tell us that if we did need something, they would get it for us.
** You can't put a price tag on the view, either from the pool or the chairs out by the sea wall. The whales had already left by the time we got there, but that loss was more than made up for by the sunsets.
** The place just screams out comfort and relaxation. Even on rainy days, we simply enjoyed the great room and never felt cooped up or uncomfortable. The doors were never locked, even when we were away.
** Dan and Melanie went out of their way to make us feel welcome, much more than any other property we've stayed at. We got a text every day making sure that everything was OK. We even got pictures of some of the sunsets. They were never intrusive, just genuinely concerned that were enjoying ourselves.
** The travel time to see touristy things like Volcanoes National Park was a little high (1-1.5 hours), but that was more than offset by the pleasure that the property itself gives.
Bottom Line: If your idea of night life involves clubs and city life, then this property is not for you, but if it involves counting the stars and listening to the quiet surf, then you absolutely can't do any better than Rick's Place.
An amazing experience to get away from it all!
We loved Rick's Place! For what we needed, which was to relax - take in the beauty of the sea, the sun, and just spend time with each other, this was perfect. Thank you for having every item available that we could think of. There were plenty of towels, coolers, kitchen supplies, beach chairs, lighters for the tiki torches, candles, a great bbq, and plenty of spices, etc. This was a paradise found. We think the whales were already heading away from Hawaii, as we didn't see any. But, we saw the migrating Hammer Head Sharks, (9 of them!) and got to see a sports fishing boat land 3 marlin right in front of the house! Walks around the neighborhood in the morning or early evening made us realize this place is special. It's off the road, and off the grid - but easy to get to the south side of island attractions and take in the uniqueness of this quiet side of the island. We had to close up the back of the house once due to high winds and sideways rain, but a half hour later it was easy to open back up to a rainbow, and everything quieted down for a great outside bbq - then the stars overhead just blew us away! The Islanders on this side weren't wanting to deal with tourists, so we smiled and made sure we were respectful - and were fine. Go the speed limits, and let them have thier space. An amazing place to see and experience!
Thank you guys so much! The waleayher can get crazy. But it’s such an amazing spot. How fun to see the marlin hook ups! May have been ahi instead. They are running right now.
Absolutely everything about this home and our stay at Rick's Place was perfection. No words or pictures can truly capture it. We arrived later in the evening and all the lights were turned on and tropical music playing to welcome us. There was a welcome letter and small gifts awaiting us as well. Melanie and Dan have thought of everything in this home. Everything you would expect but so much more - all the little things. Those extra touches and attention to detail are so clearly evident. I honestly cannot think of one thing that we needed (or could have needed) that wasn't supplied or thought of. We have stayed at several vacation homes over the past years and this one far surpasses them all. It was total relaxation in a private setting - there was nobody else around and no noise (except the crashing waves - awesome). This truly was more than just a cabin, a house or the place we were staying while on vacation. After a morning on a snorkeling trip with Body Glove (highly recommend this), we simply wanted to go "home" to Rick's Place. We never wanted to leave as we were so relaxed and comfortable there, and we had everything we needed for complete and total relaxation. We actually didn't leave the house for three of the six days we were there - and we didn't even feel guilty as we were enjoying Hawaii from our personal retreat complete with pool, lounging chairs and clifftop seating overlooking the ocean. What more could a person ask for?
The only negative thing I can say about this is that it has truly ruined all our future vacations because every home, every location and every rental owner will be compared to this and will not be able to come close to the perfect paradise that Rick's Place and Melanie and Dan have to offer. Lord willing, we will return again and again over the years.....only wish it were easier to get to from MN.
Wow! What a glowing review! Guess we are doing something right! We truly love to share our home and love it when guests don’t want to leave. A vacation to us has always been about relaxing and recharging. Thanks for staying.
All we thought it would be and more.
Thanks Melanie and Dan for letting us rent your little piece of paradise, there isn't much more we can say about it that others haven't already said. We loved the peace and quiet while we were there. The sea life treated us well, we were lucky enough to spot whales, sharks, dolphins and turtles during our stay. Your property truly fit the bill for what we were needing. Glad we got to meet you folks as well. Overall the best vacation we have ever had. Thanks so much!
The town of Ocean View is about 25 minutes south on Mamalahoa Hwy (11). There are grocery and hardware stores and shops and restaurants in the area. Continue driving and you will reach Volcanoes National Park, and South Point. Continue around the point and you will eventually get to Hilo. If instead of going south, you go north on Mamalahoa Hwy (11), you will be headed back to Kailua-Kona, where there airport is. On the way, you will pass Captain Cook (about 30 minutes from the house). There is a grocery store there as well as some great coffee houses and restaurants. There are lots of great restaurants, bars and nightlife, resorts and souvenir shopping opportunities in Kailua Kona . It's about an hour and a half drive to Kailua-Kona, depending on traffic. Continuing on the Highway will bring you past the resorts on the Kohala Coast, around Upolu Point to the quaint town of Hawi, and through the Parker Ranch. Eventually you will be back in Hilo. But don't try to circumnavigate the island in one day. It's big, and there is too much to see and do along the way!
