Melanie and Dan Lewis
About Melanie and Dan Lewis
We live on a nine acre farm above Milolii by the Highway. We made the big leap across the ocean from the tiny Northern California town of Angels Camp. We are now full-time Hawaii residents. We have been visiting the islands for decades and our heart has always been here. We have been business owners for years (we owned a fishing tackle/marine/gas station/mini mart deli on a lake for 20 years which we sold to make the move, and Dan was also a partner in a stone masonry sales and manufacture yard). Now we are refurbishing the house on the farm and just kicking back and relaxing for the first time in our lives. We enjoy meeting new people and love to meet our guests.
Melanie and Dan Lewis purchased this House in 2014
Why Melanie and Dan Lewis chose Captain Cook
Why is the house called Rick’s Place? We bought the house from our good friend from Maui, Rick, who built it. For years, we would visit Milolii with him. Rick is an ultra-cool, amazingly artistic guy, and the architecture of the house shows his artistic flair and creativity. We have been blessed with friends and family who have helped us make it a truly loved special place, with most of the artwork furnished by talented friends. We hope you enjoy and cherish your time here as much as we do.
What makes this House unique
The first time we visited Milolii, we wondered where we were going, as we drove down the long road across the lava flow. But once we were sitting on the deck, overlooking the blue ocean and watching the humpbacks against the background of a red sunset, we understood the magic of the place. We helped Rick install the pool several years later, and that really made the house perfect. I'm pretty sure there is not another ocean front house anywhere in Hawaii or even in the USA with a private pool that is an affordable vacation rental. We love our house and you will be able to tell. It's not one of those vacation rentals furnished with cheap furniture and bare minimum of kitchen stuff.

We were amazed at how wonderful Rick’s Place is! It was everything we hoped for and more!
From the views to the amenities we had everything we needed!
The house was so well stocked that we lacked for nothing!
We spent all our time outside and never turned on the tv.
The outlook at the cliffs was spectacular and a great place to set up my camera.
The private pool was a godsend...I’m not a pool person, was was in it every day! Being in your own pool and looking at the ocean is just amazing!
The huge outdoor living area was where we spent all our time. My husband misses the outdoor shower!
If you’re looking to be away from it all for an amazing, relaxing getaway, then this is your place!
Love, love, love it!
We spent the Christmas holiday at Rick's place and were thrilled. For a week we lived "off grid" (solar power, solar heated pool, filtered rain water) and felt totally pampered. The owners are close by (up the hill) but are friendly, helpful and non-intrusive. As Melanie makes very clear at booking, this is not a place for those seeking large resorts, expensive restaurants and the extensive facilities farther north on the Kohala coast. Rather you have peace, solitude and that most precious of commodities, quiet time. Whether it's soaking in the pool, sitting at the edge of the lava cliff watching the cobalt blue waves break into turquoise foam while watching for dolphins and reef fish below, or touching the outside world briefly with internet or TV, you will return from your trip refreshed and fulfilled. We have visited the Big Island many times and Rick's place is at the top of the list for a return visit.
If you are looking for a place to hang out and relax, this is it.
This property is all that the owners described it to be. They have thought of everything. This is the only place we have stayed where it seemed as if the owners supplied the house with products they would want to use themselves. For example, the snorkel gear was in great shape, and was of a quality that I would buy myself; the outdoor barbecue was a top of the line stainless steel unit, and was immaculately clean. The kitchen was well stocked with everything that you need for cooking. Oh, and no review of this property would be complete unless you mention the open air outdoor shower. For you shy folks it is plenty private, but the view is breathtaking. A great spot to snorkel is just a short walk down the road. The owners are very upfront about the remoteness of this property. It is not like you are out in the middle of nowhere, as it is large lot residential community, but it is a long ways from all sight seeing locations and activities. If you are going to go anywhere, consider it a day trip, as it is a long windy road just to get to the main road, which is also a long windy road to get to anywhere. One recommendation is to stop at Costco and buy a cooler and a bag of ice, and get ALL of your food stuff. What Costco doesn’t have you can pick up at the Safeway store. That saved us wasting a day to go back into town for shopping. The added bonus is that you can use the cooler as one of your checkin bags for no charge (on Alaska), so you can bring it home with you. But even if you don’t do that, the house comes supplied with a small cooler and ice, so make sure you take it with you when you go shopping to keep things cool for the long trip back to the house. If you want to just hang out and relax, this is a great place to go. A great product at a reasonable price, with owners that really seem to care about the guest having an enjoyable stay.
Rick's Place is perfect for a couple who wants to unplug and get away. Although it is equipped with absolutely everything you might need, you will find, upon arriving, that all you need is a bathing suit. We rarely went inside, other than to whip up some food (using top notch appliances) and then back out to eat on the porch. The bed was super comfy, and other than cooking, the only reason we went inside! We laughed about the fact that by the fifth day, we still hadn't sat on any of the furniture inside! All of which was also clean and comfortable, we just preferred to be outside. We spent all of our time either on the sea cliff watching for sharks, dolphins, fish and turtles, of which we saw plenty, swimming in the pool, or lounging on the chaises. We walked a block down the street to snorkel several times and had a blast doing that, and were grateful that Dan and Melanie supplied not only the snorkel gear, but the sunscreen. We fell asleep every night to the sound of waves, but made a point of going outside in the middle of the night, sometimes for hours, to stargaze. The whole experience was incredible and we feel refreshed and recharged! Thank you! As for the reviews that mention the drive, we didn't mind, but we also didn't do it other than to get there and leave. There was no need. My advice is to stock up at Costco upon arrival, head down to the house, and relax!
This is what makes us the happiest. Leave the TV off, and enjoy the amazing ocean and nature all around you. You guys did that!
This is easily the best VRBO stay we have experienced. Should be listed as best honeymoon spot or best place to go and relax, for older folks like us.....and everything in between.
Even Better the Second Time
Staying in new places is our goal. But for Rick's Place, we make an exception. It's truly magical! We watched dolphins, marlins, and other jumping fish, and even a couple whales off in the distance. And owners Dan and Mel are helpful, fun, have great taste and feel like old friends. We'll def be back!
Loved that you two came back! We couldn’t wait for Crawford’s guitar concert!
The town of Ocean View is about 25 minutes south on Mamalahoa Hwy (11). There are grocery and hardware stores and shops and restaurants in the area. Continue driving and you will reach Volcanoes National Park, and South Point. Continue around the point and you will eventually get to Hilo. If instead of going south, you go north on Mamalahoa Hwy (11), you will be headed back to Kailua-Kona, where there airport is. On the way, you will pass Captain Cook (about 30 minutes from the house). There are two grocery stores there as well as some great coffee houses and restaurants. There are lots of great restaurants, bars and nightlife, resorts and souvenir shopping opportunities in Kailua Kona . It's about an hour to an hour and a half drive to Kailua-Kona, depending on traffic. Continuing on the Highway will bring you past the resorts on the Kohala Coast, around Upolu Point to the quaint town of Hawi, and through the Parker Ranch. Eventually you will be back in Hilo. But don't try to circumnavigate the island in one day. It's big, and there is too much to see and do along the way!
