Discover how to REALLY relax!

Would you like to relax in your own peaceful private pool, while contemplating the vast expanse of the ocean right in front of you - amazing whales, spinner dolphins and colorful fish, the sunsets, and complete serenity, for less than the price of a resort hotel room? Then you will love our place.

Our home has one bedroom, 1.5 baths, plus an outdoor shower/toilet. Kitchen and living area are open and roomy. Bedroom and living room glass french doors open to the ocean view and breeze. Wrap-around lanai and small in-ground pool.

We have always loved this house and the magical coast of Milolii. We hope you love it as much as we do!

About Melanie and Dan Lewis

We currently live in the small town of Angels Camp in California's famed Gold Country. Angels Camp is home of the famous Calaveras County Jumping Frog Jubilee. We love to fish, and spend lots of time on New Melones Lake. When we are in Hawaii, we love to fish off the cliff by the house.

Angels Camp is a small town, and we love it. The Big Island has that same small-town feel. Everyone is so friendly, and there is no hustle and bustle.

We have been married 30+ years, and have a beautiful grown daughter, Sarah. We have always loved Hawaii, and take several trips a year there. We have made amazing friends there over the years. We hope to be able to move to Hawaii someday.

Melanie and Dan Lewis purchased this house in 2014

Why Melanie and Dan Lewis chose Kona Coast

Why is the house called Rick’s Place? We bought the house from our good friend from Maui, Rick, who built it. For years, we would visit Milolii with him. Rick is an ultra-cool, amazingly artistic guy, and the house shows his artistic flair and creativity.

We hope you enjoy and cherish your time here as much as we do.

What makes this house unique

The first time we visited Milolii, we wondered where we were going, as we drove down the long road across the lava flow. But once we were sitting on the deck, overlooking the blue ocean and watching the humpbacks against the background of a red sunset, we understood the magic of the place. We helped Rick install the pool several years later, and that really made the house perfect.

Peaceful retreat on the ocean

  • 5 of 5

Thanks Dan and Melanie for sharing your place with us. We spent most of our time on the deck looking out at the ocean. A few whale sightings during the day and a few times when they were singing after dark just added to the serenity. We made good use of the grill and just spent our time recharging our batteries in a beautiful home and location. Watching the waves crash on the rocks was mesmerizing. I would recommend that if possible, folks plan on getting there before dark. The main road was pretty winding and the road down the hill to the beach house was downright frightening to do the first time in the dark. After that everything was good. Great experience and great hosts.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your honest review. The drive is a tough one. We always imagine guests feeling like , "Where are we going? It's the middle of nowhere!" And then walking into the house and going, "Yes! "

Quiet spot, except the waves and the whales

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful one bedroom house for a couple who wants to check out from the hustle of the world and enjoy some quiet time in the sun with a book and a cool drink. This well kept oceanfront home with a small pool was a joy to inhabit for 8 nights and the show that nature put on was special. Whales, dolphins, jumping fish, birds, waves, breeze and stars form the memories we will take home. We only left once to resupply and take in some coffee farms. Highly commended.

Owner's Response: We love it best when guests "get it" and nest into the house and don't leave. It's such an amazing place if you sped your days watching the ocean and the night looking at the stars.

Wonderful stay at Rick's Place

  • 5 of 5

I can't say enough about our great vacation at Rick's Place. Everything was well attended to. They take care of every need, the view is spectacular, the house has a great vibe, lots of open spaces, windows, ocean views to die for. We had a lovely stay here. Great for a couple, remote and quiet, yet not cut off from everything. If you get a chance, take the Lava Boat Tour. Spectacular. Come to Rick's Place on the big island for r & r. We loved it.

The most relaxing peaceful experience ever to be had RIGHT on the ocean!!

  • 5 of 5

Wow!!!!!!! As we were looking for a place to stay, at first we were hesitant about the lava rock and remote location of this rental, but we were pleasantly surprised and found it to be the most beautiful and peaceful place we've ever stayed!! Before we even arrived, we got plenty of communications from the owners Melanie and Dan...they obviously want people to be prepared and know everything they need to know before heading out to their amazing hideaway ocean oasis home! Once we got there, it was more beautiful than the photos showed...a real treat! Suzi, the housekeeper/manager on site, was so friendly and helpful...she had everything SPOTLESS and meticulously prepared for our stay. Never before have we stayed in a place that cares more about making the renter's stay perfect in every way! It immediately felt like HOME!! The view is amazing...we saw sharks, watched the beautifully colored fish below, heard whales, and got to listen to and watch beautiful birds during our 5 day stay. Once there, we just wanted to stay in the peaceful ambiance instead of go anywhere else! We had EVERYTHING we could ever need and more!!! Melanie and Dan actually tell you to "be nosy" and open all drawers and cupboards...it's all for your enjoyment!! Amazing and welcoming!! The outdoor shower is very nice...something I've never experienced before and really enjoyed. The pool was a nice way too cool off and still watch the ocean at the same time. The folks who live in the neighborhood are all very welcoming and friendly too, which is nice when we went on our morning and evening walks...up and down the hills...onto the lava rocks, and just exploring the beauty around us! The open living area and structure of the home was absolutely perfect for our needs and desires...the breeze flowed gently through the house each day and the temperature was just right and very comfortable for us. All the amenities and necessities (and more) were available to us...shampoo, body wash, soaps (even laundry soap) and even a first aid kit, kitchen baggies, foil, saran wrap, cooking spices and all...it was all available!! If we could give this a "10" instead of just a "5" rating, we would! We will be back!!!

Truly MANA.

  • 5 of 5

It's taken me a week to write my review because I've been missing waking up to that amazing view and falling asleep to the sound of the waves and whales. It's everything and more you thought it would be based off the pictures and reviews. Absolutely breath taking. Everything you need is there for you. No reason to leave other then grocery shopping or eating out.

My husband and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary at Ricks Place and it was truly paradise. Like coming home the minute we walked in the door. Soft music was playing, lights were left on for us (we arrived after dark). Melanie and Dan are equally amazing. They're so easy to work with and chat with. Felt like we have been friends forever. Suzi is a complete sweetheart and always available for info or help or whatever.

It is a drive to pretty much anything. We never stay where tourist stay when we travel to the islands. We enjoy staying away from the madness. We didn't mind the drive because we were on Hawaiian time the minute we landed.

If you're looking for pure quiet and relaxation, a place to unwind and spend that time with that person who feels your heart and soul, this is the place for you.

Mahalo Dan & Melanie for allowing us to feel the MANA your home hold. Can't wait to come back. Aloha nui loa

Mamalahoa Hwy
Car: necessary

The town of Ocean View is about 25 minutes south on Mamalahoa Hwy (11). There are grocery and hardware stores and shops and restaurants in the area. Continue driving and you will reach Volcanoes National Park, and South Point. Continue around the point and you will eventually get to Hilo. If instead of going south, you go north on Mamalahoa Hwy (11), you will be headed back to Kailua-Kona, where there airport is. On the way, you will pass Captain Cook (about 30 minutes from the house). There is a grocery store there as well as some great coffee houses and restaurants. There are lots of great restaurants, bars and nightlife, resorts and souvenir shopping opportunities in Kailua Kona . It's about an hour and a half drive to Kailua-Kona, depending on traffic. Continuing on the Highway will bring you past the resorts on the Kohala Coast, around Upolu Point to the quaint town of Hawi, and through the Parker Ranch. Eventually you will be back in Hilo. But don't try to circumnavigate the island in one day. It's big, and there is too much to see and do along the way!
