About Melanie and Dan Lewis

We currently live in the small town of Angels Camp in California's famed Gold Country. Angels Camp is home of the famous Calaveras County Jumping Frog Jubilee. We love to fish, and spend lots of time on New Melones Lake. When we are in Hawaii, we love to fish off the cliff by the house.

Angels Camp is a small town, and we love it. The Big Island has that same small-town feel. Everyone is so friendly, and there is no hustle and bustle.

We have been married 30+ years, and have a beautiful grown daughter, Sarah. We have always loved Hawaii, and take several trips a year there. We have made amazing friends there over the years. We hope to be able to move to Hawaii someday.

Melanie and Dan Lewis purchased this house in 2014

Why Melanie and Dan Lewis chose Kona Coast

Why is the house called Rick’s Place? We bought the house from our good friend from Maui, Rick, who built it. For years, we would visit Milolii with him. Rick is an ultra-cool, amazingly artistic guy, and the house shows his artistic flair and creativity.

We hope you enjoy and cherish your time here as much as we do.

What makes this house unique

The first time we visited Milolii, we wondered where we were going, as we drove down the long road across the lava flow. But once we were sitting on the deck, overlooking the blue ocean and watching the humpbacks against the background of a red sunset, we understood the magic of the place. We helped Rick install the pool several years later, and that really made the house perfect.

Getaway from it all

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful romantic getaway! Wonderful relaxing views and beautiful sunsets. The home is beautiful and all details very well thought out. Felt very isolated on the beautiful deck (until we actually had neighbors that arrived!) We could feel the love and care that had been given the home and the caretaker was great. If you want to getaway from everything this is the place for you!

Paradise!!

  • 5 of 5

Once you arrive, you know this vacation will be one you will never forget!! The beautiful home, with every detail thought out for your every need---the priceless view, listening to the ocean waves and soaking in the breathtaking sunsets---and the owners, who couldn't be kinder and more helpful. This is Paradise!! Because of a family emergency, our stay was cut short, but we have made memories to last a lifetime! Thank you, Dan and Melanie, for sharing your little piece of heaven..........

Amazing Views!

  • 5 of 5

This is a great getaway for a couple wanting to relax and enjoy the sites and sounds of the ocean. Absolutely loved all the attention to detail. A whole wall of glass doors that open to your very own private pool over looking the ocean from the cliffs. We awoke to whales breaching the surf. What a beautiful site. Unfortunately we arrived on the tail end of a storm and the ocean was too rough for us to snorkel but we look forward to visiting this beautiful oasis again,

Vacation in Paradise

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful spot for a couple's getaway. Thanks to Melanie and Dan for having snorkel gear in various sizes, and for being so attentive in helping us plan our trip.

First morning we went snorkeling right down the street (we walked there)... amazing!

Super clean, perfect grill, table on patio (oops, lanai), showers (indoor and outdoor shower), very well equipped kitchen (with espresso maker)... comfy bed, exquisite ocean front pool, great western view over the ocean (for sunsets).

Perfect location for visiting and hiking volcano park, snorkeling at Two Step, Green Sand Beach and the southern most spot in the US.

Exceeded our expectations!

  • 5 of 5

We chose Rick's Place for the somewhat remote location.. Wanting to really get away and explore Hawaii on our own terms away from crowds.. And we were so pleasantly surprised to discover the house is more luxurious than we expected. Quality linens and towels, high end kitchen appliances, snorkeling gear, beach chairs and coolers.. We definitely felt like welcome guests and not renters. Any little thing we might have wanted was there for us. Definitely a great value for the price. We enjoyed 7 days exploring the south part of the island, just hanging, hiking on the dramatic lava cliffs literally a two minute walk out the door. Melanie was a pleasure to deal with. One week was wonderful but my husband and I agree we would have loved to spend two at this fun and lovely Hawaiian get-away!

Fabulous romantic retreat for two!

  • 5 of 5

This beautiful property was absolutely as it was described and more. You can choose to relax in the pool, as the waves crash against the lava rocks below and watch the whales swim by or you can choose to be adventurous and feed the manta rays at night or snorkel in one of many great bays. The owners and the property caretaker went out of their way to make sure we were happy and all of our needs and wants were met. Very unique experience and we plan to go back next year.

Mamalahoa Hwy
Car: necessary

The town of Ocean View is about 25 minutes south on Mamalahoa Hwy (11). There are grocery and hardware stores and shops and restaurants in the area. Continue driving and you will reach Volcanoes National Park, and South Point. Continue around the point and you will eventually get to Hilo. If instead of going south, you go north on Mamalahoa Hwy (11), you will be headed back to Kailua-Kona, where there airport is. On the way, you will pass Captain Cook (about 30 minutes from the house). There is a grocery store there as well as some great coffee houses and restaurants. There are lots of great restaurants, bars and nightlife, resorts and souvenir shopping opportunities in Kailua Kona . It's about an hour and a half drive to Kailua-Kona, depending on traffic. Continuing on the Highway will bring you past the resorts on the Kohala Coast, around Upolu Point to the quaint town of Hawi, and through the Parker Ranch. Eventually you will be back in Hilo. But don't try to circumnavigate the island in one day. It's big, and there is too much to see and do along the way!
