About Melanie and Dan Lewis

We currently live in the small town of Angels Camp in California's famed Gold Country. Angels Camp is home of the famous Calaveras County Jumping Frog Jubilee. We love to fish, and spend lots of time on New Melones Lake. When we are in Hawaii, we love to fish off the cliff by the house.

Angels Camp is a small town, and we love it. The Big Island has that same small-town feel. Everyone is so friendly, and there is no hustle and bustle.

We have been married 30+ years, and have a beautiful grown daughter, Sarah. We have always loved Hawaii, and take several trips a year there. We have made amazing friends there over the years. We hope to be able to move to Hawaii someday.

Melanie and Dan Lewis purchased this house in 2014

Why Melanie and Dan Lewis chose Kona Coast

Why is the house called Rick’s Place? We bought the house from our good friend from Maui, Rick, who built it. For years, we would visit Milolii with him. Rick is an ultra-cool, amazingly artistic guy, and the house shows his artistic flair and creativity.

We hope you enjoy and cherish your time here as much as we do.

What makes this house unique

The first time we visited Milolii, we wondered where we were going, as we drove down the long road across the lava flow. But once we were sitting on the deck, overlooking the blue ocean and watching the humpbacks against the background of a red sunset, we understood the magic of the place. We helped Rick install the pool several years later, and that really made the house perfect.

Simply Amazing!

  • 5 of 5

First off, I have never stayed in a VRBO that has this much thought and attention to detail. It is literally as if Dan and Melanie just leave their personal home so that you can vacation in it! Anything you may need or forgot or didn't know you needed is provided! And that is nice, as closest store is about 20 minutes away.

Let's start with that road: its super fun to drive! But made me nauseated going up as a passenger on an empty stomach. But oh the views from the road! Also, make note that Milolii is not touristy. At all. An hour plus from Kona, Volcano, Hilo. Being from Houston, we don't mind driving alot. In fact, we drove over 700 miles while we were there: Captain Cook kayak/snorkel, South Point and Black Sand Beach, Volcano Park, biking to see lava, Mauna Kea and Saddle Road, dinner cruise in Kona, and more!

House: so comfortable! Pool even has a solar heater and would get up to about 87 degrees by early afternoon and stay until a bit after dusk. Outdoor shower is fun! Lots of snorkel equipment provided, along with ice chests, and boogie boards! Kitchen has much more than basic seasonings and condiments: syrup, butter, full assortment of seasonings and condiments, just everything!

Our in-laws rented a house up the street and they were so jealous of ours! Didn't even miss having AC! And the view! Loved just sitting and watching the waves crash. I cannot say enough glowing, fabulous things about this special home!

Also, we really appreciated meeting Dan and Melanie when they brought us a bottle of wine, a mango, and a papaya! Melanie has made me a fan of mango! Not that I'll be able to get that mango back here in Texas though...

Owner's Response: Thank you for the glowing review! It was so fun to meet you both. Now that we are living here full time we are enjoying the opportunity to meet our guests. Our friend the Weavers have a mango and dragonfruit farm, and their mangos are amazing! You can buy Weaver mangos at Choicemart and KTA here on the island. So ono!

Beautiful place! Wish we stayed longer

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed here for the last 5 nights of our honeymoon and Ricks place didn't disappoint!

First off, the place was much more beautiful than the pictures lead on. As others have said, they have thought of everything you would ever need to feel comfortable. Some owners cheap out on appliances, furniture and other amenities in their vacation home (which we learned from the place we rented in Hilo- whale house). Melanie and Dan made their vacation house feel like home. It was very nice to use a good quality oven/stove and bbq since we did a lot of cooking. We spent lots of time in the pool and snorkelling down the street. There was lots of good fruit stands and local spots to eat along the highway. The Poke Shack was our favourite!

Theres nothing negative we have to say about Ricks place. We would recommend it to anyone visiting the big island. Whenever we plan another vacation to the big island we will definitely book Ricks place again.

Thanks again Dan and Melanie!

Everything As Advertised

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from ten days at Rick's Place. Having rented several times through VRBO we know properties can be embellished a bit. In this case the house, property and pre-trip input from the owners was spot on.

The house was clean and fully stocked. The owners have thought out almost everything you need and stocked accordingly with a few extras.

The property is a great relaxing location with a lot of solitude if that is what you are looking

for on your stay. You will need to travel to get to some of the attractions of the island, however we didn't feel that was a detraction. It is a bit of car time, but the roads are okay and the pace is on "Hawaiian Time".

Melanie and Dan gave us a head's up on what to expect and they were accurate with their

My only problem (and they did warn us about it) was the mosquitoes. If you are prepared for them by using bug spray you will be okay. They do supply bug spray it is on the back lanai and I recommend putting it on immediately when you get there. You will be drawn to the lower seating area by the cliffs the second you get there and that is where the majority of the biters are located. Keep the screens shut or they will get inside and you will wake up with a few new bites each morning.

With everything we did and the time spent at Rick's Place we would definitely recommend this house and if we come back to the Big Island we will look into renting this location again.

Rick's Place provides a wonderful vacation experience.

  • 5 of 5

The house is charming, comfortable and thoughtfully equipped. Soaking in the pool while gazing out across the ocean is pure pleasure. Internet service is fast and reliable. The weather has been perfect, sunny and dry. The ocean breezes are cool and refreshing. This is the nicest climate we have experienced in several trips to Hawaii. We have only good things to say about our time at Rick's Place except that we wish we could stay a few more days.

Rick's Place felt more like our second home than our ACTUAL second home!

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we first found Rick's Place on VRBO, through our last backward glance on the way to the airport, we felt at home with the property. On top of that, every contact made with Melanie and Suzi was like communicating with friends--very responsive friends! Rick's Place, its owners, and caretaker are very special, indeed.

We spent the end of our honeymoon trip (25 years delayed) at Rick's Place. It was the perfect place to end our dream vacation. We cannot imagine a better, more unbelievably awesome, setting to have spent those last nights. The house and its location were exactly what we needed and wanted. Even when completely open to the outside, the house is quiet and private and comfortable. The property is well appointed; everything necessary is available and attention has been given every detail, inside and out.

Some have commented that the house is far removed. It's really not that bad! Honestly, going anywhere on the Big Island is a bit of a trek, no matter where you stay (unless you go straight from the airport to a resort and back, without venturing out to see any of what the Big Island has to offer.) Yes, it is off the main road a bit. And, yes, Milolii Road is a series of switchbacks, down a steep hill. And, again yes, the switchbacks and hill can be daunting. But once you have gone up and down a time or two, and wound your way around other parts of the island in your travels, you hardly notice the curves and the hill. And the house is so, so, so worth it!

Our only regret is that we never saw the whales from the house on the cliff. We heard them, though! We saw many, many whales on Maui, before we got to Rick's Place. Hearing them in Milolii was just icing on the cake! There was high surf during most of our stay, which didn't allow us to see as much marine life as we had hoped. But the ocean certainly kept us entertained, crashing against the cliffs. It lulled us to sleep at night and was the first thing we looked for upon opening our eyes in the morning.

Melanie, Dan, and Suzi (and the resident gecko) could be selfish and keep this incredible property a secret. Instead, they choose to share it with those of us fortunate enough to find it. We feel so honored to have spent time and created so many wonderful memories at Rick's Place.

Owner's Response: Wow. What a glowing review! It's people like you guys who make sharing our home such a joy. Glad you loved being close to the ocean, even though you didn't see it in its calm state- it is beautiful when it is being wild, too. Happy 25th anniversary! You guys were great guests.

Mamalahoa Hwy
Car: necessary

The town of Ocean View is about 25 minutes south on Mamalahoa Hwy (11). There are grocery and hardware stores and shops and restaurants in the area. Continue driving and you will reach Volcanoes National Park, and South Point. Continue around the point and you will eventually get to Hilo. If instead of going south, you go north on Mamalahoa Hwy (11), you will be headed back to Kailua-Kona, where there airport is. On the way, you will pass Captain Cook (about 30 minutes from the house). There is a grocery store there as well as some great coffee houses and restaurants. There are lots of great restaurants, bars and nightlife, resorts and souvenir shopping opportunities in Kailua Kona . It's about an hour and a half drive to Kailua-Kona, depending on traffic. Continuing on the Highway will bring you past the resorts on the Kohala Coast, around Upolu Point to the quaint town of Hawi, and through the Parker Ranch. Eventually you will be back in Hilo. But don't try to circumnavigate the island in one day. It's big, and there is too much to see and do along the way!
