About Melanie and Dan Lewis

We currently live in the small town of Angels Camp in California's famed Gold Country. Angels Camp is home of the famous Calaveras County Jumping Frog Jubilee. We love to fish, and spend lots of time on New Melones Lake. When we are in Hawaii, we love to fish off the cliff by the house.

Angels Camp is a small town, and we love it. The Big Island has that same small-town feel. Everyone is so friendly, and there is no hustle and bustle.

We have been married 30+ years, and have a beautiful grown daughter, Sarah. We have always loved Hawaii, and take several trips a year there. We have made amazing friends there over the years. We hope to be able to move to Hawaii someday.

Melanie and Dan Lewis purchased this house in 2014

Why Melanie and Dan Lewis chose Kona Coast

Why is the house called Rick’s Place? We bought the house from our good friend from Maui, Rick, who built it. For years, we would visit Milolii with him. Rick is an ultra-cool, amazingly artistic guy, and the house shows his artistic flair and creativity.

We hope you enjoy and cherish your time here as much as we do.

What makes this house unique

The first time we visited Milolii, we wondered where we were going, as we drove down the long road across the lava flow. But once we were sitting on the deck, overlooking the blue ocean and watching the humpbacks against the background of a red sunset, we understood the magic of the place. We helped Rick install the pool several years later, and that really made the house perfect.

AMAZING!!!

Absolutely beautiful!!! My husband walked in and his first remark was AMAZING! It is a drive to get there, but well worth it. The owners and the property manager responded quickly to any questions we had. We definitely want to visit again.

Magical. Absolutely beautiful and magnificent in every aspect.

  • 5 of 5

We came here for our honeymoon after getting married in Kauai. Time stood still as the stress of normal life just washed away with the ocean tide. Before we knew it we were practically natives as we were taken in by the slowed pace way of life and lovely culture. We hope the spirit comes home with us, but either way... we will be back. ;-)

Superb solitude

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay - quiet and peaceful. Off the beaten path, which was just what we were looking for. The house was furnished beautifully, with everything you could possibly need. We enjoyed gorgeous sunsets from the deck or sitting at the seawall. Actually saw our first whale breaching as a group of pilot whales passed by. Being early November, we weren't sure we'd see any whales, but it was pretty spectacular! The little geckos were entertaining and really enjoyed the jam we put out for them - strawberry seemed to be preferred over boysenberry. We highly recommend Dan and Melanie's place if you're looking for a nice quiet oceanfront neighborhood.

Quaint getaway tucked in by the sea!

  • 4 of 5

Rick's Place is a nice home on the Ocean on the Southwest part of Hawai'i, in the Villiage of Miloi'i. The home is a traditional Hawaiian home, one bedroom, including a deck, grill and a cozy pool off the back door. The views of the ocean are incredible! Note: the home is located on a lava field, you must have shoes, sandles or other shoe ware to walk on ground!

The home is remote, the nearest grocery is a 30 minute drive, the Viking Stove, an amazing appliance, cooking enjoyment is certain. We used the stove and grill every day and never ate out!

If you want to be away from it all this is the place for you!

Loved every single minute of our stay at Rick's place

  • 5 of 5

Very nice place, quiet and peacefull. Very well maintained and looked after, which apparently is like a full-time job directly on the cliffs.

The house has everything you could think of, absolutely fantastic.

We stayed there for five days and nights in early August and enjoyed every single minute.

If we'll ever make it back to Hawaii we'd love to stay at Rick's Place, again.

Map

Nearest Motorway
4 Miles
Mamalahoa Hwy
Car: necessary

The town of Ocean View is about 25 minutes south on Mamalahoa Hwy (11). There are grocery and hardware stores and shops and restaurants in the area. Continue driving and you will reach Volcanoes National Park, and South Point. Continue around the point and you will eventually get to Hilo. If instead of going south, you go north on Mamalahoa Hwy (11), you will be headed back to Kailua-Kona, where there airport is. On the way, you will pass Captain Cook (about 30 minutes from the house). There is a grocery store there as well as some great coffee houses and restaurants. There are lots of great restaurants, bars and nightlife, resorts and souvenir shopping opportunities in Kailua Kona . It's about an hour and a half drive to Kailua-Kona, depending on traffic. Continuing on the Highway will bring you past the resorts on the Kohala Coast, around Upolu Point to the quaint town of Hawi, and through the Parker Ranch. Eventually you will be back in Hilo. But don't try to circumnavigate the island in one day. It's big, and there is too much to see and do along the way!
